The Buick Lucerne offered the 3800 Series III V6 for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 model years. For 2009, Buick replaced that engine with a 3.9-liter V6 in the CX and CXL; a V6 Lucerne from 2009 or later is not a 3800.
Which Lucerne years had the 3800?
The 3.8-liter 3800 Series III was offered in the 2006–2008 Lucerne CX and CXL V6. Buick’s 2006 Lucerne brochure identifies it by name and says it was standard on CX and CXL V6. Buick’s 2008 CXL Special Edition release confirms that the 3.8-liter continued in that model year.
What changed for 2009?
In 2009, the CX and CXL V6 switched from the 3.8-liter to a 3.9-liter V6. The Lucerne remained in production through the 2011 model year, but that does not make its later V6 models 3800s. Consumer Guide’s Lucerne model history describes the 3.9-liter as replacing the 3.8-liter. For the 2009 3.9-liter, J.D. Power’s model-history page lists 227 hp and 237 lb-ft and reports gasoline or E85 capability.
| Lucerne model years | V6 configuration | Published output |
|---|---|---|
| 2006–2008 | 3.8L 3800 Series III; CX and CXL V6 | 197 hp at 5,200 rpm and 227 lb-ft at 3,800 rpm, per Buick’s 2006 brochure; Buick’s 2008 release repeats 197 hp and 227 lb-ft. |
| 2009–2011 | 3.9L V6 in CX and CXL; replaced the 3.8L in 2009 | For 2009, J.D. Power lists 227 hp and 237 lb-ft and reports gasoline or E85 capability: J.D. Power. |
Why trim matters when identifying one
The Lucerne name alone does not identify the engine. The 3800 applied to CX and CXL V6 configurations, not every Lucerne. Buick’s 2006 lineup also included V8 configurations: the CXL could be equipped with a V8, and the CXS was associated with a V8. Check both the model year and the specific car’s engine rather than assuming that a particular trim or a V6 badge proves it has a 3800. The 2006 brochure documents the launch-year offerings, while Consumer Guide’s model history covers the Lucerne range.

How to confirm the engine in an individual Lucerne
The model-year and trim details establish which engines Buick offered, not the build specification of a specific used car. If you are buying, servicing or ordering parts for one, use its VIN or vehicle build record to confirm the engine, then match service information and parts to that engine and model year. This is especially important for 2009–2011 CX and CXL V6 cars, whose 3.9-liter engine is not the 2006–2008 3800.

The Lucerne’s last 3800 model year was 2008. That establishes the end of the engine’s run in the Lucerne, not the final 3800 application across every General Motors brand or vehicle. Model year is also distinct from calendar-year production dates; the available model-history evidence does not establish an exact production end date for all 3800 applications. The 3800 Series III application relevant to these Lucernes is identified as L26 in the source material.
