Bugatti’s new Tourbillon V16 has a voice unlike the W16 that defined the marque’s sound for more than two decades. Each official clip makes me more interested in hearing it again—not because “better” can be settled by a measurement, but because this naturally aspirated engine gives the car a different mechanical character. Bugatti’s latest development update says acoustic homologation testing is complete and the major phase of sound development has concluded. What does the Bugatti Tourbillon V16 sound like?
My reaction to the Tourbillon’s V16 is that it sounds compelling every time Bugatti releases another listen. The appeal is the sense of an engine doing its own work: this is a naturally aspirated V16, not the W16 soundtrack familiar from the previous era. Bugatti describes the new note as “raw yet refined” and “entirely mechanical in its origin.” Those are the manufacturer’s characterizations, not acoustic measurements or a verdict shared by every listener.
For the best reference, start with Bugatti’s official “Sound Of A New Era pt.1” episode. The episode is a way to hear the sound Bugatti is presenting; it is not a controlled comparison with a W16. No independent sound-pressure readings or listener-study results are established here, so claims that the V16 is objectively louder or better would go beyond the evidence.
Why the V16 marks a change from Bugatti’s W16
The contrast begins with the powertrain. The Tourbillon uses an all-new naturally aspirated V16 developed with Cosworth, paired with three electric motors. Bugatti presents the V16 as a new voice for the marque after more than two decades in which the W16 was part of its identity. Rather than simply continuing that earlier engine’s sound, the company says its engineers drew on Bugatti heritage while shaping the acoustic character of a V16 hybrid.

That change in sound source matters: the Tourbillon’s engine is naturally aspirated, while electric motors contribute substantially to the car’s power. Bugatti calls the V16 note mechanical in origin, but that description should not be mistaken for a claim that every sound the complete hybrid makes comes from the engine alone.
What Bugatti and Cosworth say about the V16
Bugatti rounds the engine’s displacement to 8.3 liters; Cosworth gives the more precise figure of 8.35 liters. The figures reflect each source’s stated precision, not a contradiction. Bugatti says the engine produces 1,000 hp at 9,000 rpm and 900 Nm of torque. Separately, the three electric motors contribute a stated 800 hp, bringing Bugatti’s stated combined output to 1,800 hp.

Bugatti’s September 2026 update says acoustic homologation testing was successfully completed and the major phase of acoustic development had concluded. The company said small refinements were still under way. Paolo Magrone, Bugatti Vehicle Development Driver, described that closing work this way:

“We’re still working on small refinements and little details. The big chunk of the project is done and we are here just to close this chapter. It’s been a successful and positive testing activity.”
His remarks concern the final refinements, after the homologation testing—not a claim that development stopped before the sound was validated for homologation. Bugatti’s account frames the process as a deliberate effort to give the Tourbillon a distinct voice while drawing on the marque’s heritage.

Why the sound keeps drawing me back
The Tourbillon’s appeal, for me, is the combination of a very different engine layout and a sound story Bugatti is still revealing through official clips. The specifications explain what makes the V16 notable; they cannot establish how every listener will respond to its note. Listen to the official episode and decide whether this new mechanical voice works for you.
