Yes—several used performance cars advertised below $20,000 have source-reported 0–60 mph estimates between 4.8 and 5.7 seconds. That can look close to a 718 Cayman in a straight line, but no source here provides a controlled Cayman-versus-candidate test. Treat the list as a way to find affordable, genuinely quick sports cars, then judge cornering, braking, condition, and running costs separately.
“Keep up with a Cayman” is three different questions
A Porsche 718 Cayman is not defined by one stopwatch number. Depending on what you mean by “keep up,” you may be asking whether a car can match acceleration, stay with it on a winding road, or run a similar lap on a circuit. Those outcomes depend on different hardware and different drivers.

- Straight-line acceleration: engine output, gearing, traction, transmission shifts, launch technique, tires, and test conditions dominate. A 0–60 mph estimate is useful for screening cars, not proving equality.
- Road speed: steering response, body control, tire grip, brakes, differential behavior, visibility, and driver confidence matter more than peak horsepower alone.
- Track pace: heat management, brake durability, alignment, tires, setup, and driver consistency can overwhelm a small paper advantage.
The exact Cayman used as a benchmark must also be named by model year, engine, transmission, and test method. A 4.9-second 0–60 figure is often used as a reference for a current manual 718 Cayman, but that number is not independently verified here and should not be treated as a universal Cayman specification.
Nine sub-$20,000 candidates at a glance
The acceleration and price figures below come from iSeeCars entries for the specified model years. The 0–60 numbers are source estimates, and the average prices are historical source averages rather than promises about today’s listings. The source text does not state a publication year for those entries.

The nine cars, and the kind of performance each offers
1. 2012 Nissan 370Z: the closest straight-line value
At 4.8 seconds in the iSeeCars estimate, the 370Z is the quickest entry in this nine-car set and sits just under the unverified 4.9-second reference often associated with a current manual 718 Cayman. Its source average used price is $19,877, leaving almost no room in a $20,000 ceiling for deferred maintenance, tires, registration, or inspection work.
The 370Z’s naturally aspirated V6 is the reason it attracts shoppers who want a traditional rear-drive sports coupe. Do not assume every 2012 car delivers the same result: transmission, trim, tire age, and launch technique change acceleration. A car that has been modified or neglected can be slower and less trustworthy than an unmodified example with a higher odometer reading.
2. 2012 Audi S5: quick grand-touring performance
iSeeCars estimates 4.9 seconds to 60 mph and an $18,940 average used price for the 2012 S5 entry. That makes it compelling on paper, but the source describes different engine configurations for coupe and convertible versions. Confirm the body style, engine, transmission, and drive system from the vehicle identification number and the listing paperwork rather than relying on the S5 badge.
An S5 can feel more like a fast, insulated grand tourer than a lightweight mid-engine sports car. Its premium age brings an especially strong reason to prioritize complete maintenance records, a clean inspection, and a repair reserve instead of spending the entire budget on the purchase price.
3. 2012 Ford Mustang: only meaningful when the engine is specified
The iSeeCars listing gives a 5.1-second estimate and a $16,685 average price for a 2012 Mustang. That figure cannot be generalized to every Mustang sold that year: four-cylinder, V6, and V8 versions have very different output, gearing, brakes, and chassis equipment.
When searching, put the engine and performance package in the headline of your notes. A lower-trim car may offer strong straight-line value but less tire, brake, and suspension hardware for repeated cornering. A well-kept rear-drive Mustang can be entertaining and inexpensive to support, yet it is not automatically a Cayman substitute simply because one version reaches 60 mph quickly.
4. 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK: compact roadster with a major engine split
iSeeCars lists 5.1 seconds and an $16,251 average used price for the 2012 SLK entry. The same source describes both a 201-hp four-cylinder and a 302-hp V6, so the number is not a safe assumption for every car advertised as an SLK.
Check the roof mechanism through a complete open-and-close cycle, look for water intrusion, and verify that the engine and transmission match the performance claim. The SLK’s appeal is a compact retractable-hardtop roadster experience; it is better viewed as a comfortable open-air performance car than as proof that a heavier luxury roadster will match a Cayman in every corner.
5. 2014 Audi TT: quick enough, but drivetrain matters
The 2014 TT entry is listed at 5.3 seconds and $19,255 on average. The source describes the cited version as a 211-hp turbocharged four-cylinder with front-wheel drive. Other TT configurations exist, so an all-wheel-drive or differently equipped car should not be represented by that exact figure.
The TT’s compact dimensions and turbo torque make it easy to use in traffic and on short back roads. Before buying, confirm drivetrain, transmission, cooling-system condition, and evidence of timely turbo-engine service. Its acceleration may be close to the benchmark in a short run while its front-drive balance produces a different experience at corner entry and exit.
6. 2012 Dodge Challenger: speed with substantial mass
iSeeCars gives the 2012 Challenger a 5.3-second estimate and an $18,308 average used price. Trim distinctions are critical, and the large coupe’s weight affects braking, direction changes, and tire wear even when its launch is strong.

Choose a Challenger if you value a stable, relaxed high-speed character and available muscle-car power. If your definition of “keep up” means a tight technical road, evaluate brake feel, alignment, tire quality, and body control on the specific car rather than relying on acceleration alone.
7. 2014 Chevrolet Camaro: check the engine before comparing numbers
The 2014 Camaro entry is listed at 5.4 seconds and $19,051 on average. Engine choice changes the result substantially. AutoTrader’s budget guidance notes that higher-mileage or older SS examples may sometimes fall within reach, but availability and condition vary by location.
A Camaro can deliver an engaging rear-drive coupe experience and strong aftermarket support. It also has limited outward visibility compared with smaller sports cars, so a test drive should include parking, tight bends, and emergency-braking feel. Record the exact engine, transmission, tire model, and brake condition in any comparison with a Cayman.

8. 2012 BMW Z4: roadster character at a mid-$17,000 average
The 2012 Z4 entry carries a 5.5-second estimate, a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter description, and a $17,969 average used price. Verify the generation and configuration because Z4 listings can combine different engines, transmissions, and equipment under similar labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Z4 emphasizes a refined two-seat roadster feel. Its performance depends heavily on service history, tire condition, and whether previous owners altered the suspension or engine software. A pre-purchase inspection is more valuable than chasing a theoretical tenth of a second.
9. 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata: the handling-first answer
At 5.7 seconds and $15,993 on average, the Miata is the slowest in this group on the cited 0–60 estimates. It belongs here because “keeping up” on a winding road is not the same as winning a drag race. Low mass, approachable limits, steering feedback, and a manual-roadster layout can make it rewarding at legal road speeds.
Inspect the underside for corrosion, check the soft top and drains, and look for uneven tire wear that can reveal alignment or accident damage. A Miata will not reproduce a Cayman’s power delivery, but it can provide a focused sports-car experience while preserving more of the budget for tires and maintenance.

Several guides identify additional performance cars below or around the same target. AutoTrader describes the 2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with a 3.8-liter V6, 348 hp, and rear-wheel drive, and the 2017 Infiniti Q60 as a 2+2 coupe with a 300-hp turbo V6, rear- or all-wheel drive, and a 400-hp Red Sport possibility in some areas. Trim, geography, and condition determine whether either actually fits a $20,000 search today.

Its mid-engine layout and handling make it the most direct architectural comparison here, but it is an older Cayman, not the 718 benchmark. Age-related repairs and a specialist inspection are essential.
For newer, balance-focused alternatives, AutoTrader characterizes the 2019 Subaru BRZ as engaging rather than brutally powerful. Edmunds lists an $18,815 average price in a February 2025 guide for 2017–2020 Fiat 124 Spider models; Classica and Lusso versions are rated at 160 hp and 184 lb-ft, while Abarth versions make 164 hp. Edmunds lists $18,319 for 2016–2019 Subaru WRX models in the same guide. Those are guide averages, not live quotes.

How to shop without buying a cheap car that needs expensive work
Set the performance specification first
Write down the minimum acceptable engine, transmission, drivetrain, and body style before contacting sellers. For the Mustang, Camaro, SLK, S5, TT, and Z4 especially, a badge-only search mixes cars with materially different powertrains.
Use the $20,000 figure as a total acquisition budget
Source averages describe vehicle prices, not the full cost of ownership. Reserve money for an independent inspection, fluids, tires, brakes, registration, and immediate repairs. Premium models can be inexpensive to buy yet costly when neglected maintenance appears after delivery.

- Request the vehicle identification number, title status, service invoices, and a cold-start video.
- Compare the advertised engine and drivetrain with the VIN build information and factory labels.
- Inspect tire age and wear, brake thickness, fluid leaks, warning lights, panel gaps, and signs of structural repair.
- Use a basic OBD-II code reader to look for stored diagnostic codes. It is a preliminary screen, not a replacement for a professional pre-purchase inspection.
- Pay for an independent inspection before negotiating final price, particularly on the older Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche entries.
Test the qualities a 0–60 number cannot show
On a safe, legal route, assess clutch engagement or shift quality, steering centering, brake modulation, suspension noises, overheating, and traction-control behavior. A car that feels vague, pulls under braking, or overheats is not a performance bargain regardless of its advertised acceleration.
How to make a fair Cayman comparison
Use the same definition for both cars: model year, trim, transmission, tire type, fuel load, launch method, and test surface. Compare published or instrumented results from the same kind of test whenever possible. Then create separate notes for cornering balance, braking consistency, ride, visibility, and driver confidence.
None of the listed sources establishes a same-day, controlled test against a specified 718 Cayman. The defensible conclusion is therefore narrower: these cars can offer compelling performance for the money, and several have source-reported acceleration close to a commonly cited Cayman reference. They do not collectively prove equal lap times or equal handling.
Verdict
Start with the 370Z if straight-line pace and a traditional rear-drive sports coupe are the priority. Consider the Miata or BRZ when cornering enjoyment matters more than horsepower, and investigate the S5, SLK, TT, Z4, Mustang, Challenger, or Camaro only after pinning down the exact engine and condition. A well-maintained example with good tires and documented service will give you a far better chance of enjoying Cayman-level excitement than the fastest-looking neglected listing.
