Austin and Atlanta are separate cases: Waymo rides there are requested through Uber. A city appearing on the list does not mean every suburb, airport or street address is covered, and it does not guarantee that a vehicle is available when you request one.
The reliable way to check is to enter your ZIP code on Waymo’s rides page, then enter the exact pickup and destination in the correct booking app. The app’s trip result is the practical, current answer for that journey.

What “Waymo operates here” actually means
Waymo describes its service as “our public, fully autonomous ride-hailing service.” In practice, several different milestones can be described as a market being “available,” and they are not interchangeable:
- Listed operating market: the city or metro appears on Waymo’s current service information.
- Serving riders: the service page identifies the market as active, but the covered territory may be only part of the metro area.
- Welcoming riders: Waymo is onboarding riders in a newer market and may expand access in stages.
- Open to everyone: anyone who meets the app’s normal requirements can request a ride, subject to the service area and live vehicle supply.
- Booked through Uber: in Austin and Atlanta, the Waymo partnership uses Uber as the booking interface rather than the standard Waymo app.
These labels can change as a rollout progresses. A launch announcement, a city list and a successful trip request are therefore different kinds of evidence. For a particular journey, the ZIP checker and the booking result matter more than a city name on a general list.
Where Waymo lists service
The following reflects the city-level information in Waymo’s current FAQ and service pages. Treat it as a starting point, not a street-by-street coverage map.
| City or area | Waymo’s stated rider status | Booking path |
|---|---|---|
| Dallas | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| Denver | Anyone can ride in the FAQ; access has expanded after the initial public-rider phase | Waymo app |
| Houston | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| Las Vegas | Welcoming riders | Waymo app |
| Los Angeles | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| Miami | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| Nashville | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| Orlando | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| Phoenix (Metro Phoenix) | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| San Antonio | Welcoming riders | Waymo app |
| San Diego | Welcoming riders | Waymo app |
| San Francisco Bay Area | Anyone can ride | Waymo app |
| Tampa | Welcoming riders | Waymo app |
| Austin | Partnership market | Uber app only |
| Atlanta | Partnership market | Uber app only |
Waymo said on September 1, 2026, that it was beginning to welcome its first public riders in Denver, San Diego and Tampa, with access expected to broaden over time. On April 15, 2026, it said Miami and Orlando had opened to everyone. Those announcements illustrate why a status label should be checked again when you are ready to travel rather than copied indefinitely from an older rollout story.
How to check whether your exact trip is covered
Use this sequence whenever you need a dependable answer for a pickup and destination.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Start with Waymo’s ZIP-code checker. Open Waymo’s rides page and choose “Let’s check availability in your area.” Enter the ZIP code for the pickup address. This is a first filter for whether the location is in or near a current service area.
- Identify the correct booking app. In the normal Waymo markets, continue in the Waymo app. If the trip is in Austin or Atlanta, use Uber; Waymo says those rides are offered through its Uber partnership and are not requested in the standard Waymo booking flow.
- Enter both endpoints. Put the precise pickup address and destination into the app, including a building entrance, hotel, terminal or other useful pin detail. A ZIP code or city result alone cannot establish that both ends of the ride are inside the operating territory.
- Read the trip result as a live decision. If the app offers a Waymo ride, the request has passed the current coverage and matching checks. If it does not, the city’s presence on a list does not override that result.
- Check vehicle proximity in Austin or Atlanta. Waymo says an Uber rider can be matched only when the request is inside the service area and a vehicle is nearby. Limited territory and nearby-vehicle supply can therefore prevent a match even when the address is in the broader market.
- Recheck near the travel date. Service areas, onboarding status and vehicle supply can change. A result obtained weeks earlier is not a guarantee for a future pickup, particularly in a newer market.
People outside a current area can use Waymo’s rides page to sign up for launch notifications. That expresses interest in a future rollout; it is not an indication that rides are available today.
Which app should you use?
The app distinction is simple but important because searching in the wrong app can make an available service appear to be missing.
| Where you are requesting the ride | App to open | What still determines success |
|---|---|---|
| Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area or Tampa | Waymo | The exact pickup and destination must be within the active service territory, and a vehicle must be available for the request. |
| Austin or Atlanta | Uber | The request must be inside Waymo’s limited territory and a nearby Waymo vehicle must be available for matching. |
In Austin and Atlanta, selecting the ordinary ride options in another app will not substitute for the Uber pathway Waymo specifies. Conversely, seeing a Waymo listing in a general city guide does not mean that the Waymo app is the correct place to request it in those two partnership markets.
Why a city listing does not guarantee your address
Metro boundaries are not uniform
“Los Angeles,” “Phoenix” or “San Francisco Bay Area” describes a broad market label, not a promise that every municipality, neighborhood or outlying suburb is inside the robotaxi operating zone. Service can stop at a boundary that is invisible when you look only at a regional name.
Pickup and destination are separate checks
A pickup can be accepted while a proposed destination is outside the service area, or the reverse. Enter both addresses before assuming the trip works. Airports, event venues, hospitals, campuses and newly built developments deserve especially careful checking because the usable pickup point may differ from the address you would normally type.
Coverage and supply are different
An address can be geographically covered while no vehicle is currently close enough to accept the request. Waymo’s guidance for Uber bookings explicitly makes nearby-vehicle availability a condition of matching. The same practical limitation applies to planning any on-demand ride: coverage describes where service may operate; supply determines whether a car can be assigned now.
How to interpret Waymo’s rollout labels
Waymo’s pages separate markets where it is “Serving Riders In” from places listed as “Up Next.” Keep the categories distinct:
- Serving Riders In: a current service market. You still need to verify the address and live match.
- Welcoming riders: public access is being introduced or broadened. Some people may be able to ride while access expands to more users.
- Open to everyone: the market has moved beyond a limited onboarding phase, but normal service-area and vehicle-supply limits remain.
- Up Next: an announced or planned expansion, not current ride availability.
The transition can happen quickly. Denver, San Diego and Tampa were identified as beginning their first public-rider phase on September 1, 2026, while Miami and Orlando were announced as open to everyone on April 15, 2026. Always use the current status page and app rather than inferring today’s access from a launch date.

What happens when you request a ride
The booking flow combines two decisions: geographic eligibility and live matching. First, the system checks whether the pickup and destination fall within the operating territory for that market. It then looks for an appropriate nearby vehicle. In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo specifically says an Uber request is matched only when both conditions are met.
Waymo states that its service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That is a schedule statement, not a promise that a car will be waiting at every address at every hour. Late-night, early-morning, remote or unusually busy requests can still produce no immediate match.
Planning airport, hotel and suburb trips
Airports
Do not assume that a citywide listing includes every airport terminal or rideshare staging area. Enter the terminal or designated pickup location in the app, and follow any in-app instructions for where the vehicle can meet you. If the app cannot accept the terminal address, treat that as the current operational answer for the trip.
Hotels and large venues
Use the exact entrance or pickup pin rather than only the property name. A venue may have several entrances, private roads or restricted loading zones. The app’s accepted pin and instructions are more useful than a generic map search result.
Suburbs and cross-boundary trips
Check both ends of a suburban or cross-city journey. A ride that starts inside the service area may not be offered if the destination crosses outside the current boundary. If the trip is important, run the check again close to departure because boundaries and access can change during a rollout.
Troubleshooting an unavailable result
The ZIP checker says you are outside the area
Try the ZIP for the actual pickup, not a nearby downtown ZIP. If it remains outside, Waymo’s rides page can collect your details for launch notifications. Do not treat a notification sign-up as a booking or an estimate of when service will reach your address.
Your city is listed, but the app rejects the address
Check the destination as well as the pickup, then try the precise entrance or an approved public pickup point if one is shown. If the result still fails, the address is not currently eligible even though the wider city is listed.
The app shows no vehicle
Wait briefly and retry with the same endpoints, especially during a demand spike. In Austin and Atlanta, make sure you are requesting through Uber. If no match appears, the issue is live supply rather than proof that the entire market has closed.

Comparing Waymo availability between two cities
If you are deciding whether a robotaxi will work in two different destinations, compare four items rather than simply comparing city names. First, check whether each city is listed as serving riders, welcoming riders or up next. Second, identify the booking interface: most listed markets use Waymo, while Austin and Atlanta use Uber. Third, test the exact pickup and destination in each market, because a metropolitan label does not establish address-level coverage. Fourth, check whether a vehicle can actually be matched at the requested time. A city with an “open to everyone” label can still fail a particular trip if an endpoint is outside the territory or no vehicle is nearby.
This method also prevents a common planning error: treating a newer launch announcement as equivalent to unrestricted access. Denver, San Diego and Tampa began welcoming first public riders on September 1, 2026, while Miami and Orlando were described as open to everyone on April 15, 2026. Those are meaningful rollout milestones, but neither replaces a live address check.

A practical pre-booking checklist
- Confirm the pickup ZIP with Waymo’s availability checker.
- Use the app assigned to the market: Waymo in the standard markets, Uber in Austin and Atlanta.
- Enter the exact pickup entrance and destination, not only the city or neighborhood.
- Check whether the app offers a Waymo ride at the time you actually need it.
- Look for pickup instructions, restricted roads or a designated meeting point.
- Recheck close to departure if the booking is important or the market is newly launched.
- Keep a conventional transportation backup for a time-critical trip when no live match is shown.
What Waymo’s published driving figure does—and does not—tell you
Waymo’s current rides page says it has accumulated “over 200 million miles of real-world driving experience.” That is a company-published figure and should be understood as Waymo’s own description of its operating history, not an independent safety study, a guarantee that every ride will be available, or proof that a particular route is risk-free.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The operational question is narrower: whether a ride can be requested at your addresses now. For that question, the ZIP checker and the live booking result are more useful than a mileage total or a general statement about autonomous driving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to keep the answer current
Waymo’s city list and access labels are rollout information, not a permanent timetable. Before publishing a travel plan or telling someone else that a ride is available, check the current FAQ or rides page, note whether the market is open to everyone or still welcoming riders, and run the exact trip through the relevant app. If the pages and the app appear to disagree, use the app’s current trip result for that pickup and destination, because it reflects both service-area rules and live vehicle matching.
Frequently asked questions
Is Waymo available in every part of a listed city?
No. Waymo’s city and metro names are broad market labels. The ZIP checker and the booking app determine whether your specific pickup and destination are inside the active territory.
Can I book a Waymo ride in Austin or Atlanta with the Waymo app?
No. Waymo says rides in Austin and Atlanta are offered through its Uber partnership, so use Uber for those requests.

No. It describes rider access, not guaranteed vehicle supply. The app must still find a nearby vehicle and accept both endpoints.
What if my pickup is covered but my destination is outside the area?
The trip may be rejected. Coverage is checked for both ends, so enter the complete route before relying on the ride.
Are Waymo rides available all day?
Waymo says its service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That schedule does not guarantee a nearby vehicle at every hour or address.
What does “welcoming riders” mean?
It indicates that public access is being introduced or expanded. Access may be staged, so eligibility can differ from a market that is already open to everyone.

What should I do if the ZIP checker says my area is not covered?
You can sign up for launch notifications on Waymo’s rides page. That records interest in a future expansion but does not create a current booking.
How far in advance should I check?
Check once while planning and again close to departure. Rollout status, service boundaries and live vehicle availability can change, especially in newer markets.

Bottom line
Waymo’s published city list is only the first filter. Start with the ZIP checker, use Waymo or Uber according to the market, enter both exact addresses, and treat the live trip result as the final answer. Keep in mind that “welcoming riders,” “open to everyone” and “up next” describe different rollout stages, and none guarantees a nearby vehicle for a future request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Waymo available in every part of a listed city?
No. City and metro names are broad market labels. Use Waymo’s ZIP checker and then test the exact pickup and destination in the booking app.
Which app books Waymo rides in Austin and Atlanta?
Uber. Waymo says its partnership makes rides in those two cities available through Uber rather than the standard Waymo app.
Does open-to-everyone status guarantee a vehicle?
No. It describes rider access. The trip still needs covered endpoints and a nearby vehicle that can be matched.
Are Waymo rides available 24/7?
Waymo states that service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but that does not guarantee a car at every address or time.
What does welcoming riders mean?
Waymo is introducing or broadening public access in stages. Eligibility may differ from a market already open to everyone.
What if the ZIP checker says I am outside the area?
Sign up for launch notifications on Waymo’s rides page. A notification signup is not a current booking or a promise of a launch date.
Should I check both pickup and destination?
Yes. A trip can fail when either endpoint is outside the active service territory, even if the other endpoint is covered.
How current is a previous availability check?
Treat it as temporary. Recheck near departure because rollout status, boundaries and live vehicle supply can change.
The Bottom Line
Waymo operates in a growing set of U.S. markets, but a city name is not address-level availability. Check your ZIP, choose the correct app, enter both endpoints and trust the live trip result. Austin and Atlanta require Uber, and every market remains subject to service boundaries and nearby-vehicle supply.
