Formula 1 published an official clip of Max Verstappen’s crash after contact with Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 British Grand Prix, plus an onboard-focused video covering their Silverstone battle. But F1’s description does not confirm that the onboard video includes a dedicated forward-facing camera from Verstappen’s car.
Official videos of the Silverstone collision
The most direct official crash video is Formula 1’s “2021 British Grand Prix: Huge Verstappen crash after contact with championship rival Hamilton”, published on July 18, 2021. It runs 2 minutes 25 seconds and shows the crash.

Formula 1 also published “WATCH: Hamilton vs Verstappen, Alonso’s heroics and an epic Sprint – the top 10 onboards from Silverstone”. F1 describes it as covering the full wheel-to-wheel battle between the two drivers, which ended with the championship leader in the barriers. That description establishes an onboard-oriented compilation, not a specific camera view from Verstappen’s car.
What happened in the crash
The collision happened on Lap 1 of the 2021 British Grand Prix, on the high-speed approach to Copse, Turn 9. Verstappen had started from pole. Hamilton’s Mercedes clipped the right-rear wheel of Verstappen’s Red Bull; Verstappen left the track and hit the tyre barriers. The barrier damage prompted a red flag.
#1 Best Overall
Verstappen got out of the car and went to the medical centre and a nearby hospital for precautionary checks. The FIA’s race report says Hamilton later won after serving his penalty.

After reviewing video and telemetry, the FIA stewards found Hamilton predominantly at fault. Their decision said he was slightly behind Verstappen on the inside, on a line that did not reach the apex, and did not avoid contact as Verstappen turned in. The stewards issued Hamilton a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points on July 18, 2021.
That is the stewards’ finding; it should not be conflated with what any one publicly available camera angle appears to show. The FIA decision records a review of video and telemetry, but does not identify a released Verstappen onboard clip as the basis for its ruling.
Hamilton’s response after the race
In the FIA Sunday post-race press conference, Hamilton said he had not really seen the footage, characterized the clash as a normal battle, disagreed with the stewards, and accepted the penalty. He put it this way: “I don’t agree with stewards but I take my penalty on the chin and get on with my job.”
