In December 2021, 17-year-old Max McRae was preparing to step into the 2022 Australian Rally Championship after signing with Auto One. The moment marked a significant move from junior competition toward national-level rallying—but it did not make him the son of Colin McRae: Max is Colin’s nephew, the son of former rally driver Alister McRae, and the grandson of Jimmy McRae.
What was Max McRae taking on in 2021?
PerthNow reported on 6 December 2021 that Max had signed with Auto One ahead of the 2022 Australian Rally Championship. He was 17 when that story appeared. It described a planned step into the national championship, not a record of how the 2022 season ultimately unfolded. PerthNow’s December 2021 report also said he had finished second in the National Junior Championships in Queensland earlier that year.
For a young driver, the significance was the transition: from junior results and varied early racing experience to a place on the program for Australia’s national rally championship. Max described his enthusiasm to PerthNow at the time: “I’ve always been obsessed with rally racing and am excited to enter the big league.” That was his ambition in 2021, not a promise of a particular result or future career.
How is Max related to Colin McRae?
Max is the son of Alister McRae, a former rally driver, and the grandson of Jimmy McRae. Colin McRae was Alister’s brother, making Colin Max’s uncle—not his father or grandfather. This distinction matters because the McRae name carries a family history in rallying, but Max’s career is his own.

PerthNow’s 2021 article noted that Jimmy won five British Rally Championship titles and that Colin won the 1995 World Rally Championship. Colin’s profile also reached beyond competition: the article referred to seven racing games released under his name between 1998 and 2009. Those achievements provide context for the family legacy Max was entering; they are not evidence of Max’s own competitive record.
What had Max done before the planned 2022 championship?
His early path was not limited to rally cars. Motorsport.com reported in November 2019 that Max won a funded drive in the 2020 West Australian Formula 1000 series through the Arise Racing Driver Search. A funded circuit-racing opportunity gave him a different kind of seat time from rallying, but the available reporting does not support a direct performance comparison between the disciplines. By November 2021, Autosport had reported on Max’s participation in the Australian Rally Championship and his stated ambition to reach the World Rally Championship. The WRC goal was an aspiration he expressed then, not a confirmed destination or guaranteed career progression. Autosport’s November 2021 coverage provides that contemporary context.

What did the McRae name mean in competition?
For Max, the family connection was both personal history and a visible link to rallying’s past. In 2021, he told PerthNow: “I just love the absolute commitment while driving, the speed of it all, and how fearless you have to be.” His description captures the appeal of rallying as he saw it then; it should not be read as a technical account of his driving style.
The family connection also appeared at the McRae Rally Challenge. In July 2022, DirtFish reported that Max drove Colin’s championship-associated Subaru at the event at Knockhill. That was a later appearance after the 2021 story, and a distinct occasion from his planned Australian championship campaign. DirtFish’s 2022 report describes the drive. What is known about Max McRae’s more recent results?
A recent DirtFish search result says Max won the 2025 McRae Rally Challenge and describes his move to higher-speed closed-road stages. That supports reporting those specific developments, but it does not establish his full 2026 program, current team, championship position, or season status.
