Use the NHRA Member Track Locator to find nearby member tracks, then check the venue’s own calendar or call before you go. A listing identifies a candidate track—not whether it is open for public racing today or whether it offers the event you want. If you plan to race a street-driven car, ask about a Street Legal event and its current vehicle and driver requirements.
Find nearby drag strips with the NHRA locator
NHRA’s Member Track Locator is a practical starting point for finding tracks in your state or area. NHRA’s Street Legal page also directs drivers to the locator for nearby member tracks. Its participant guide reports more than 110 NHRA member tracks across the United States, Canada, and Mexico; that is the size of NHRA’s network, not a complete count of every legal drag strip or a promise that a listed track has public racing on a particular date.

Use the locator to create a shortlist, then compare travel distance and the event each venue actually has scheduled. There is no single nationwide directory in the cited information that establishes every legal strip or its current public-access status.
Confirm the event and schedule before you leave
NHRA advises prospective racers to check a track’s website or call its listed number to confirm the schedule and whether the venue is open for racing. This matters because a track may host private events, competition meets, spectator events, or no public racing on the day you have in mind.

Choose an event that fits your goal
Street Legal
Street Legal events are intended for eligible street-driven vehicles in a controlled drag-racing setting. NHRA says many such events include open time trials and grudge racing, but the format varies by track. Confirm that the event is open to your vehicle and ask what participants can expect that day. NHRA’s Street Legal information says participating vehicles must meet the highway safety requirements of the state where they are registered and retain their OEM safety features.

Test-and-tune
A test-and-tune session can be a useful first outing if you want to make runs without focusing on competition. NHRA describes these sessions as a way to learn track procedures and etiquette while making passes. They are not available at every venue or on every date, so check the track calendar and confirm the session is open to your car.

A competition event may have different entry, class, inspection, or equipment requirements than a casual test session. A spectator event may let you watch but not make a pass. Ask the venue which format is scheduled and whether public racing entries are being accepted.

Check eligibility, safety gear, and arrival requirements
Requirements depend on the event and venue. NHRA’s general participation guide lists seat belts, working headlights and taillights, safe DOT-approved tires, and a secured battery among vehicle requirements. The guide also lists long pants (not nylon), a sleeved shirt, closed-toe shoes, and socks for drivers. Helmets and additional safety equipment may be required; do not assume a particular helmet or vehicle qualifies without checking with the track.
Before traveling, describe your car and ask the track what it will inspect and what you must bring. Confirm whether it requires a driver’s license, registration or other documentation, particular clothing, a helmet or other equipment, and any event-specific preparation. NHRA’s current rules page lists the 2026 Rulebook and Street Legal rules section; use the current rules alongside the track’s instructions for the event you plan to attend.

A quick checklist for calling a track
- Is the facility open to the public for racing on the date I’m considering?
- Is the event Street Legal, test-and-tune, competition, or spectator-only?
- Can my registered street car participate, and what inspection or documentation is required?
- What clothing, helmet, and other safety equipment do I need?
- What are the current admission, tech, and participation charges?
- Where should I check for weather-related changes or cancellations?
Prices and access details are set locally and can change; ask the track for current amounts and instructions. No nearest venue can be identified without your location, and a locator result alone does not establish an upcoming public event.
