Subaru’s reported plan, announced in May 2024, was to build the next-generation gasoline Forester and a Forester Hybrid at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) in Lafayette, Indiana, while continuing Forester production in Gunma, Japan. That is a historical plan—not confirmation that either model is being built there now or that U.S. dealers have a delivery date.
Where will the new Subaru Forester be built?
May 2024 reports said Subaru would add the next-generation gasoline Forester to production at SIA in Lafayette, Indiana. The same plan included a Forester Hybrid. Torque News reported the announcement as having been made by Subaru CEO Atsushi Osaki at Subaru Corporation’s fiscal year-end 2024 meeting; Car and Driver also reported the U.S. hybrid-production plan.
The reports said Forester production would continue in Gunma, Japan, as well. They did not specify how many vehicles each plant would build or which markets would receive vehicles from either location. Torque News’ May 13, 2024 report and Car and Driver’s May 13, 2024 report are secondary accounts of the plan.
Will the Forester Hybrid be made in the U.S.?
According to those 2024 reports, yes: Subaru planned to produce the Forester Hybrid at SIA in Indiana. Car and Driver said U.S. hybrid production was due to start in 2026, while Torque News described it as expected to begin around 2026. Those dates were targets reported at the time, not verification of a current production start.

The reports do not establish whether the plan or timing has since changed, when the first U.S.-built hybrids will reach dealerships, or what the hybrid’s final specifications will be. They also do not give a plant-by-plant production split, capacity, or vehicle allocation.
What Subaru executives reportedly said
Torque News attributed the following remarks to Subaru President and CEO Atsushi Osaki: “While we have steered toward EVs, we find it important to sell internal combustion products at the same time.” The report also attributed to him: “So, we already have plans to expand our hybrid product lineup.” These quotations are reported speech from that article, not an independently verified transcript.

Torque News also quoted Scott Brand, then identified as SIA president and COO, welcoming the decision to build the Forester at the Indiana facility. His reported comment described the plan as a sign of confidence in SIA associates and an opportunity for the plant to contribute to the brand.

The production reports do not provide specifications for the planned U.S.-built Forester Hybrid. A separate 2025 review of the gasoline Forester listed a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder producing 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. It gave fuel economy as 26/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined for most trims and 25/32/28 mpg for Sport and Touring. Those figures describe the reviewed 2025 gasoline model, not the hybrid or a confirmed Indiana-built vehicle. Driving On Road’s July 13, 2025 review also cited 152,000 Foresters sold in 2023 as context; that is neither a current sales figure nor a production count.
