Subaru builds vehicles in Japan and the United States: at its Gunma manufacturing complex in Japan and at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) in Lafayette, Indiana. Toyota is Subaru’s largest shareholder, but it does not own the company outright. As of March 31, 2026, Toyota held 21.46% of Subaru’s shares, and Subaru described Toyota as an “other affiliated company,” not a parent.
Where are Subaru cars made?
Subaru’s two automotive manufacturing locations are its Gunma operations in Japan and SIA in Lafayette, Indiana. The Japanese sites include vehicle assembly as well as plants that make engines and transmissions; SIA assembles vehicles primarily for the North American market, according to Subaru’s 2025 Integrated Report.
| Location | Manufacturing role | Models listed by Subaru |
|---|---|---|
| Gunma Prefecture, Japan | Main and Yajima assemble vehicles; Oizumi makes engines and transmissions. | See plant listings below. Subaru describes mixed and flexible production, so these are not exclusive, permanent assignments. |
| Kitamoto, Saitama Prefecture, Japan | Makes transmissions; Subaru’s 2025 Integrated Report identifies transaxles for its next-generation hybrid system. | Not stated in Subaru’s August 2026 facilities directory. |
| Lafayette, Indiana, United States (SIA) | Vehicle assembly, primarily for North America. | Forester, Crosstrek, and Ascent, per Subaru’s August 2026 facilities directory. |
Which Subaru models are built at each site?
Subaru’s facilities directory, marked “As of August 2026,” lists the following products by plant:
- Main Plant, Gunma: Levorg, Impreza, Crosstrek, WRX, and Subaru BRZ.
- Yajima Plant, Gunma: Outback, Forester, and Trailseeker.
- Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Lafayette: Forester, Crosstrek, and Ascent.
These are dated company listings, not a guarantee that a model is made only at the listed site. Subaru describes mixed-model and flexible production, and plant assignments can change. A vehicle’s assembly location is best checked for the specific model year and vehicle rather than inferred from a nameplate alone.

Are Subarus made in the USA?
Yes. SIA in Lafayette, Indiana, assembles Subaru vehicles. Subaru says the facility was founded in 1987 as a joint venture with Isuzu and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Subaru Corporation in 2003. That ownership relationship is separate from Toyota’s minority shareholding in Subaru Corporation.
In Subaru’s 2025 Integrated Report, SIA accounted for more than 35% of Subaru Group vehicle production in the period covered by that report. The figure is a report-period measure, not a current 2026 production share. Subaru also reported that cumulative vehicle production at SIA reached six million in June 2025.

Does Toyota own Subaru?
No—not outright. Toyota is Subaru’s largest single shareholder, but its stake is a minority one. Subaru’s shareholder data dated March 31, 2026, lists Toyota Motor Corporation with 153.6 million shares, or 21.46% of shares excluding treasury stock. Other large shareholders include two trust-bank accounts.
In a June 2026 notice, Subaru reported Toyota’s voting rights at 21.5%, called Toyota an “other affiliated company,” and identified no parent company. Subaru Corporation is a publicly listed Japanese company headquartered in Tokyo, with automotive and aerospace businesses. Toyota’s significant stake and business ties do not make it Subaru’s outright owner.

How are Subaru and Toyota connected?
The companies collaborate as well as share an investment relationship. In a May 2024 policy update, Subaru described plans for jointly developed battery-electric SUVs with Toyota and said it planned to sell a battery-electric vehicle manufactured at a Toyota U.S. plant. Those statements describe plans announced at that time; they should not be read as confirmation of completed production or a current plant assignment.
Subaru’s 2025 Integrated Report also described a new finished-vehicle plant under construction at Oizumi for future battery-electric vehicle production. That report-era plan does not establish that the plant is operating today.
