Rivian’s R1T electric pickup is built in Normal, Illinois. The same factory produces the R1S SUV and Rivian’s commercial delivery vans. Rivian is also expanding the Normal complex for R2 production, while a second plant in Stanton Springs, Georgia, is under construction and projected to begin production in 2028.

Rivian Automotive, Inc. is not owned by one automaker or by founder RJ Scaringe. It is a publicly traded company whose shareholders own the business. Volkswagen is the largest currently disclosed shareholder, while Amazon remains another major investor.

Where is the Rivian R1T made?

The Rivian R1T is assembled at Rivian’s manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois. This is currently the company’s principal vehicle-production site and the home of the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and commercial delivery vans.

The plant occupies the former Mitsubishi Motors assembly site. Rivian acquired and expanded the facility, which now covers approximately 4.3 million square feet. The company is adding another roughly 1.1 million square feet to support production of its smaller R2 platform.

That means “made in Illinois” refers to final vehicle assembly at Normal. Rivian also operates California facilities focused on engineering, software, electronics, motors, inverters, charging technology, and corporate work. Those California sites are important to the vehicles’ development, but they are not R1T assembly plants.

Rivian manufacturing locations

Location Status Production or purpose
Normal, Illinois Operating R1T, R1S, commercial vans, and expansion for R2 production
Stanton Springs, Georgia Under construction Planned large-scale R2 production; projected production start in 2028
California locations Operating Engineering, software, electronics, motors, inverters, charging, and corporate operations

Is Rivian building trucks in Georgia?

Not currently. Rivian’s Georgia project at Stanton Springs is a future manufacturing facility rather than the present source of R1T production. Rivian projects that the plant will come online in 2028, with the facility intended to help scale production of the R2 platform.

For buyers asking where a current R1T came from, the short answer is Normal, Illinois—not Georgia. The Georgia plant is part of Rivian’s longer-term manufacturing expansion.

Who owns Rivian?

Rivian Automotive, Inc. is a publicly traded company. Its Class A shares trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker RIVN. Ownership is therefore spread among public investors, institutions, company insiders, and strategic corporate investors rather than concentrated in a single parent automaker.

Rivian has two share classes with different voting rights:

Rank #2

  • Class A shares: one vote per share.
  • Class B shares: ten votes per share.

This distinction matters. A shareholder can have a relatively small percentage of Rivian’s economic ownership but a larger percentage of its voting power if it holds Class B stock. Ownership percentages can also move when Rivian issues shares through investment agreements, employee compensation plans, warrants, or convertible securities.

Volkswagen is Rivian’s largest disclosed shareholder

Volkswagen is Rivian’s largest currently disclosed strategic shareholder, but it does not own Rivian outright. In a filing based on April 30, 2026, Volkswagen AG and its wholly owned subsidiary Volkswagen US-Holding reported beneficial ownership of 209,769,645 Rivian Class A shares, or 15.9%. The filing included 62,889,522 shares issued to Volkswagen on April 30, 2026.

That makes Volkswagen a significant investor, not Rivian’s parent company. Rivian remains a separate publicly traded corporation with its own board, management, brand, products, and stockholders.

What is the Rivian-Volkswagen joint venture?

Rivian and Volkswagen also jointly own Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC. The venture is owned on a 50–50 basis and is separate from Volkswagen’s shareholding in Rivian.

The joint venture focuses on technology rather than vehicle assembly. Its work includes:

  • Chrome plated simulated alloy wheels, dual exhaust stacks, roof mounted horns and mirrors with antennas

  • Decals with optional stripes or custom graphics - Kenworth markings and license plates
  • Includes illustrated instructions
  • Electrical architecture
  • Vehicle software
  • Electronic control units
  • Vehicle-network technology

Volkswagen has also committed additional investment to Rivian subject to financial, operational, regulatory, and testing conditions. Rivian’s filings state that Volkswagen’s additional equity investments could total approximately $1.5 billion, in addition to earlier investments. A separate $1 billion term-loan facility was scheduled to be available to the joint venture during October 2026, subject to financing conditions.

These arrangements explain why Volkswagen is closely linked with Rivian, but they do not turn Rivian into a Volkswagen subsidiary.

Does Amazon own Rivian?

Amazon is another major Rivian shareholder. Rivian’s 2026 proxy statement reported that Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC beneficially owned 162,086,884 shares, or 12.9%, including shares issuable under an Amazon warrant. Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC is wholly owned by Amazon.com, Inc.

Amazon’s investment is closely associated with Rivian’s commercial delivery-van relationship: Rivian builds electric delivery vans for Amazon. However, Amazon does not own Rivian outright, and its stake does not make Rivian an Amazon subsidiary.

Other major Rivian shareholders

Rivian’s 2026 proxy and related ownership filings also identified several other substantial holders:

The Vanguard Group 68,313,205 shares 5.4%
Volkswagen International America 146,880,123 shares as of the proxy’s April 23 ownership date 11.7%

The Volkswagen International America figure was later superseded by Volkswagen’s updated April 30 beneficial-ownership filing reporting 15.9%. This is why shareholder percentages should always be read alongside the filing date. They are not permanent specifications like a truck’s wheelbase or battery capacity.

Does RJ Scaringe own Rivian?

Robert J. “RJ” Scaringe founded Rivian in June 2009 and remains the company’s chief executive officer and chairman of the board. He owns Rivian shares, but he is not the company’s sole owner.

Rivian’s 2026 proxy reported that Scaringe beneficially owned:

  • 10,798,921 Class A shares
  • All 3,912,500 outstanding Class B shares

Those holdings represented approximately 1.2% of Rivian’s economic ownership but approximately 3.8% of combined voting power. The difference comes from the ten-votes-per-share attached to Class B stock.

Why the ownership answer can change

Rivian’s ownership table is not static. Percentages may change when:

  1. Rivian issues new shares to an investor.
  2. Warrants become exercisable or are included in beneficial-ownership calculations.
  3. Employees receive or exercise equity awards.
  4. Convertible securities convert into stock.
  5. An investor buys or sells shares.

For that reason, the most accurate answer should be tied to a particular SEC filing date. Based on the ownership information provided here, Volkswagen is the largest disclosed shareholder at 15.9%, Amazon holds 12.9% in Rivian’s 2026 proxy disclosure, and no company owns Rivian outright.
