Most Range Rovers are made in England, not India. JLR’s current manufacturing information identifies the Solihull plant in the West Midlands as the home of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Velar. The Range Rover Evoque is built at Halewood in Merseyside, near Liverpool.
Range Rover is not an independent car company. It is a brand operated by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which is ultimately owned by India’s Tata Motors. Tata completed its purchase of the Jaguar and Land Rover businesses from Ford in June 2008.

Where each Range Rover model is made
The answer depends on which vehicle carries the Range Rover name. JLR’s English plants do not all build the same models.

Those are the principal current production assignments identified by JLR. Manufacturing allocations can change as new generations and powertrains are introduced, so the table should not be read as a permanent statement about every vehicle built in the past or every market.

Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Velar: Solihull, England
Solihull is JLR’s flagship manufacturing site and the principal production home of the larger Range Rover family. JLR describes it as the “home of the Range Rover” and lists the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Velar among the vehicles manufactured there.
The plant is in the West Midlands, southeast of Birmingham. It has a particularly important role because it builds several versions of the brand’s most recognizable products rather than serving only as a historical assembly location.
Solihull and the shift toward electrification
Range Rover production at Solihull is being adapted for multiple powertrains. The plant’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture, or MLA, supports vehicles with internal-combustion engines, mild-hybrid systems, plug-in-hybrid systems, and planned battery-electric derivatives.
JLR has been preparing Solihull to build the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric alongside combustion and plug-in-hybrid vehicles. JLR’s FY2025 reporting said that an initial pure-electric Range Rover test build had rolled off the Solihull line and that the facility was being readied for electric production. Its FY2026 reporting says Range Rover Electric is scheduled for launch in the second half of fiscal year 2026/27, with the relevant production lines substantially complete.
That does not mean every Range Rover is currently electric. It means Solihull is being configured to manufacture different powertrain types as model launches and market availability progress.
Range Rover Evoque: Halewood, England
The Range Rover Evoque is made at JLR’s Halewood plant in Merseyside, near Liverpool. JLR identifies Halewood as the manufacturing site for both the Evoque and Discovery Sport.
The Evoque entered production at Halewood in 2011. The site is now undergoing a major transformation intended to support future electric production while continuing to build existing Evoque and Discovery Sport models.

Halewood’s future role is tied to JLR’s Medium-size Modular Architecture, or EMA. JLR plans to use the plant for future electric medium-sized SUVs, including a future Range Rover-family model based on that platform. As with Solihull, the transition is intended to support a period in which existing and new powertrains may overlap.
Are any Range Rovers made in China?
Yes, selected JLR vehicles have been produced in China for the Chinese market through the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture. JLR operates a vehicle-and-engine manufacturing facility in Changshu in cooperation with Chery.
Historically, that joint venture manufactured the Range Rover Evoque for China, along with other JLR models. However, this history should not be generalized to every Range Rover sold around the world. JLR’s current global-footprint information identifies Solihull as the manufacturing home for the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Velar, and Halewood as the home of the Evoque.
The most accurate way to describe China-based production is therefore market-specific and subject to change. A China-market vehicle may have a different production origin from an equivalent model sold elsewhere, and past joint-venture production does not establish the source of every current vehicle.
Does Tata Motors own Range Rover?
Yes, ultimately. Tata Motors Limited is the ultimate parent company of the Jaguar Land Rover business. Range Rover itself is a JLR brand, not a separately listed automaker.
JLR’s corporate ownership chain is generally described as:
- Tata Motors Limited — the Indian ultimate parent and controlling company.
- TML Holdings Pte. Ltd. — a Singapore-based intermediate holding company.
- Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc — the JLR group parent.
- Jaguar Land Rover Holdings Limited and operating subsidiaries — the companies responsible for JLR’s operating activities, including Jaguar Land Rover Limited.
JLR’s audited FY2025 annual report states that Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc is wholly owned by Tata Motors through TML Holdings Pte. Ltd., and that the JLR group has been a wholly owned Tata Motors subsidiary since 2008.

When did Tata Motors buy Jaguar Land Rover?
Tata Motors completed its acquisition of Ford’s Jaguar and Land Rover businesses in June 2008. The reported net consideration was approximately $2.3 billion.

Tata therefore acquired the operating automotive businesses behind Jaguar and Land Rover, while JLR continued to function as a distinct automotive organization.
Does Tata Motors build Range Rovers in India?
Ownership by Tata Motors does not mean that Range Rovers are made in India. The principal Range Rover production locations identified by JLR are in England: Solihull for the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Velar, and Halewood for the Evoque.
Tata’s ownership and JLR’s manufacturing footprint are separate questions. Tata Motors controls the corporate group, but JLR continues to design, engineer, and manufacture vehicles through its own international operations. JLR also uses localized and joint-venture production arrangements for selected vehicles and markets, including China.

For the models assigned to Solihull or Halewood, the relevant vehicle assembly and manufacturing operation is based in England. That does not mean every component necessarily originates in the United Kingdom. Modern vehicles use international supply chains, and their parts may come from multiple countries before final vehicle production.
It is also important to separate a vehicle’s manufacturing location from:
- the country where its parent company is headquartered or incorporated;
- the nationality of the brand’s owner;
- the market where the vehicle is sold; and
- the location where a particular component or engine was produced.
In short, a Range Rover can be a British-built vehicle made by a British automotive operation while belonging to an Indian-owned corporate group.

How production is changing
JLR is investing in a manufacturing structure that can accommodate the brand’s transition from conventional powertrains to electrified vehicles.
- Solihull: being prepared to build electric Range Rover models alongside internal-combustion and plug-in-hybrid vehicles on the MLA-based system.
- Halewood: being transformed to support electric medium-sized SUVs on the EMA platform while existing Evoque and Discovery Sport production continues.
- China: retaining a role in JLR’s broader strategy through a joint venture and market-specific manufacturing, although individual model allocations may change.
These plans make the manufacturing answer more dynamic than it was when every model had a single, fixed production identity. For a current vehicle, the build country shown on its vehicle documentation or identification label is the final authority for that specific example.

Range Rover collectibles
For readers interested in the brand’s design and manufacturing heritage rather than a new vehicle, a Range Rover scale model is a more relevant keepsake than a generic automotive accessory. JLR’s own shop lists 1:43-scale Range Rover models, although availability and exact model selection can change.
A history book or owner’s manual can also be useful, but manuals must be matched carefully to the exact generation, engine, market, and model year. A manual for one Range Rover is not automatically suitable for another.
