An exclamation mark on your dashboard does not have one universal meaning. The symbol’s surrounding shape, color, flashing pattern, and any accompanying message determine whether it is warning about tire pressure, the brakes, a master warning, power steering, or an electric-vehicle system.
As a quick guide: a tire-shaped horseshoe with an exclamation mark usually means low tire pressure or a TPMS fault; a red exclamation mark inside a circle or parentheses usually concerns the brake system or parking brake; a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark is commonly a master warning; and a steering-wheel or vehicle-shaped symbol points to a vehicle-specific steering or EV-system problem.

First, identify the symbol before you drive on
Look at the complete icon rather than the exclamation mark by itself. Also note whether the light is red, amber, or yellow; whether it is steady or flashing; and whether the instrument display shows a text message. The owner’s manual for your exact vehicle remains the final authority because manufacturers use similar-looking symbols differently.
| What the icon looks like | Most likely meaning | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Tire or horseshoe shape with ! | Low tire pressure or a TPMS malfunction | Stop safely and check every tire with a gauge. |
| Red ! inside a circle or parentheses | Parking brake, low brake fluid, or brake-system fault | Release the parking brake. If the light stays on, stop safely and arrange service. |
| Yellow or amber triangle with ! | Master warning; the underlying problem varies | Read the message center and consult the manual. |
| Steering wheel with ! | Electric power-steering warning | Take the warning seriously and follow the vehicle’s service instructions. |
| Vehicle or EV outline with ! | Possible battery, high-voltage, charging, or vehicle-system fault | Follow the displayed message and the manufacturer’s restart or service procedure. |
What to do immediately
- Reduce risk first. If the warning is red, flashing, accompanied by a buzzer, or paired with unusual vehicle behavior, move to a safe location as soon as traffic conditions allow.
- Read the dashboard message. A triangle or other master-warning icon is only an alert to look for the underlying message.
- Check the symbol’s shape. Do not assume every exclamation mark means low tire pressure.
- Do not reset the warning blindly. Clearing a lamp without correcting the cause can hide a tire, brake, steering, or high-voltage fault.
- Stop driving if the vehicle is unsafe. A flat or rapidly deflating tire, persistent red brake warning, loss of steering assistance, smoke, burning odor, unusual heat, or worsening handling calls for roadside help or towing rather than a normal trip to a repair shop.
Tire-shaped exclamation mark: low pressure or TPMS fault
The most common exclamation-mark warning is the TPMS icon: a cross-section of a tire that looks like a horseshoe, with an exclamation mark in the middle. In the United States, this is the federally permitted low-tire-pressure warning indicator. It illuminates when one or more tires are significantly underinflated.

A steady tire-shaped warning usually means you should check the pressure. Do not rely on appearance alone: a tire can be substantially underinflated without looking flat, and driving on it can cause heat buildup, poor handling, accelerated wear, or tire damage.
How to check and correct the pressure
- Park away from traffic and inspect all four tires for a puncture, sidewall damage, bulge, or object in the tread. Check the spare if your vehicle has a TPMS-equipped spare or if the manual says it is monitored.
- Use an accurate gauge on cold tires. “Cold” generally means the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours and has not recently been driven far.
- Compare the readings with the pressure on the driver-side doorjamb, door edge, or tire-and-loading information label. That is the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure.
- Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s normal target. The sidewall number is a tire limit, not usually the carmaker’s recommended setting.
- After adding air, inspect again for leaks or damage. If a tire loses pressure again, have it repaired or replaced rather than repeatedly refilling it.
NHTSA recommends checking tire pressure at least monthly, even when the warning light is off. Keeping a digital tire pressure gauge for cars in the vehicle is a practical way to measure each tire against the doorjamb specification. A gauge helps you measure pressure, but it does not identify every TPMS sensor or tire fault.
If the tire is confirmed to be undamaged and merely low, a portable 12-volt tire inflator can restore pressure at the roadside. Treat an inflator as a pressure-maintenance tool, not a tire repair: do not use it as a reason to continue driving on a punctured, bulging, or rapidly leaking tire.

If the tire-shaped light flashes for roughly 60 to 90 seconds after startup and then remains illuminated, the vehicle may be reporting a TPMS malfunction rather than only low pressure. Possible causes include a failed pressure sensor, sensor battery, wiring or receiver issue, incompatible replacement wheel, or a required relearn procedure.
Measure the tires anyway, because low pressure and a system fault can occur together. If the pressures are correct but the flash-then-solid pattern continues, arrange TPMS diagnosis. Some vehicles turn the light off after several minutes of driving once the correct pressure is restored; others require a manual reset or sensor relearn. The exact procedure is model-specific.
Red exclamation mark in a circle or parentheses: brake warning
A red exclamation mark enclosed by a circle, often with parentheses around it, generally relates to the parking brake or brake system. Depending on the vehicle, it can illuminate because:

- the parking brake is applied or not fully released;
- brake fluid is low;
- the brake pads or hydraulic system need attention; or
- the vehicle has detected another brake-system fault.
Make sure the parking brake is completely released. If the red warning remains on, do not treat it as a routine maintenance reminder. Continued driving may mean reduced braking performance or longer stopping distances. Pull over safely and arrange professional inspection; if the vehicle’s manual or a qualified professional does not establish that it is safe to move, have it towed.

A brake warning may appear at the same time as an ABS light. If only the ABS light is illuminated, conventional braking may still be available on some vehicles, although anti-lock braking is disabled. If both the ABS and red brake-system warnings are on, the anti-lock and regular braking systems may both have a problem. Because the consequences vary by model, follow the owner’s manual and do not assume the vehicle is safe simply because the brake pedal still works.
Yellow triangle with exclamation mark: master warning
A yellow or amber triangle containing an exclamation mark is commonly a master-warning indicator. It is not a diagnosis. The underlying message could involve a driver-assistance system, lighting, washer fluid, tire pressure, or another vehicle condition.
Read the text in the instrument cluster or infotainment display. If the message identifies a system malfunction, schedule service promptly. If it reports a low fluid level or another routine condition, correct that condition according to the manual and confirm whether the warning clears. Do not apply one brand’s interpretation to every vehicle: a Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, Chevrolet, and other makes may use the triangle for different sets of alerts.

Steering wheel with an exclamation mark
An exclamation mark next to or inside a steering-wheel icon can indicate an electric power-steering-system warning. Some vehicles use a yellow warning light for this condition. The warning may mean that steering assistance is reduced or unavailable, which can make the wheel substantially harder to turn, particularly at low speed.
Do not assume this is a cosmetic warning or solve it by simply switching the light off. If steering effort changes, the vehicle pulls unexpectedly, or assistance is lost, stop in a safe place and follow the model-specific instructions. A persistent warning should be inspected before normal driving continues.
Vehicle or EV icon with an exclamation mark
Electric vehicles and hybrids may display a vehicle-shaped exclamation icon for a high-voltage, battery, charging, or related vehicle-system fault. The exact meaning is manufacturer-specific. A red EV warning can be accompanied by messages such as a battery fault, reduced acceleration, or a high-voltage-system service request.
Read the accompanying message and follow the manufacturer’s stated restart procedure, if one is provided. If the warning persists, arrange service. Do not work on high-voltage components yourself, and do not assume that a restart has repaired the fault merely because the warning temporarily disappears.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Red: generally indicates a condition requiring immediate attention. A persistent red brake or vehicle-system warning should not be treated as an ordinary “drive it when convenient” reminder.
- Amber or yellow: usually requires attention and may permit limited driving, but the message and vehicle behavior determine whether that is safe.
- Flashing: generally deserves more urgency than a steady light. A flashing TPMS light at startup followed by a steady light specifically points toward a TPMS fault.
- Green or blue: usually indicates that a feature or system is operating, rather than warning of a fault, although the manual controls the interpretation.
Any warning becomes more urgent when combined with an audible alert, hard or soft brake pedal, loss of steering assistance, smoke, unusual heat, a burning smell, reduced acceleration, or rapidly worsening handling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When roadside assistance or towing is the right choice
If a tire is flat, visibly damaged, or losing air rapidly, do not continue driving on it. Use the vehicle’s spare only if it is present, properly inflated, serviceable, and approved for the situation. Otherwise, roadside assistance for a flat tire may be able to install a usable spare, inflate a tire when appropriate, or tow the vehicle when the tire or vehicle is unsafe. Coverage, eligibility, and service area vary by plan and location, and roadside assistance does not replace tire or brake repair.
For a persistent red brake warning, a warning accompanied by loss of steering, or an EV high-voltage-system message, towing is often safer than attempting to drive to a shop. If the warning persists after basic checks, look for a qualified brake inspection service or TPMS diagnosis provider that can work with your vehicle’s make and model.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every exclamation mark means low tire pressure. The brake, master-warning, steering, and EV icons are different warnings.
- Checking pressure by sight. Use a gauge; visual inspection is not reliable for moderate underinflation.
- Using the tire sidewall’s maximum pressure. Use the cold pressure on the vehicle’s doorjamb label or in the manual.
- Expecting the tire light to go out instantly after adding air. Some systems need driving, a reset, or a sensor relearn.
- Using a generic OBD-II scanner as a guaranteed TPMS solution. TPMS faults may require direct pressure measurement, sensor-specific equipment, or a manufacturer procedure.
- Resetting the warning without finding the cause. A reset can hide the symptom without fixing the unsafe condition.
- Driving normally with a persistent red brake warning. Release the parking brake first; if the lamp remains on, stop safely and seek qualified service or towing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive with an exclamation mark on the dashboard?
It depends on the symbol. A tire-shaped light may allow limited driving after you safely verify and correct the pressure, provided the tire is undamaged. A persistent red brake warning, loss of steering assistance, a rapidly leaking tire, or a red EV-system warning should generally mean stopping safely and arranging inspection or towing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why is the tire-pressure light still on after I added air?
The pressure may still be incorrect, another tire may be low, the system may need time driving to update, or the vehicle may require a reset or sensor relearn. If the light flashed at startup before staying on, suspect a TPMS malfunction and arrange diagnosis.
Does an exclamation mark always mean low tire pressure?
No. The tire-shaped horseshoe symbol commonly concerns TPMS, but an exclamation mark in a red circle can indicate a brake warning, a yellow triangle can be a master warning, and steering-wheel or vehicle-shaped icons can identify steering or EV-system faults.
Where do I find the correct tire pressure for my car?
Check the tire-and-loading label on the driver-side doorjamb or door edge, or the owner’s manual. Do not normally use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s recommended setting.
The Bottom Line
The shape matters more than the exclamation mark. Check a tire-shaped warning with a gauge, treat a persistent red circle warning as a possible brake problem, read the message behind a yellow triangle, and do not continue driving when a tire, brake, steering, or EV warning is paired with unsafe vehicle behavior.
