Polestar is no longer simply Volvo’s electric-car sub-brand. It is a separate publicly listed electric-vehicle company, but it remains closely tied to China’s Geely automotive group through ownership, technology and manufacturing relationships.
Where a Polestar is built depends on the model, production year and destination market. Current and recent production has taken place in China, South Korea and the United States.

Where are Polestar cars made?
Polestar vehicles have been assembled in several countries:
| Model | Known production locations | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Polestar 1 | Chengdu, China | Limited-production plug-in hybrid; production ended in 2021. |
| Polestar 2 | Luqiao, China | The main production site for the Polestar 2 has been Volvo Cars’ plant in Luqiao, Zhejiang. |
| Polestar 3 | Chengdu, China; Ridgeville, South Carolina, United States | U.S. production was added for vehicles intended primarily for North America. |
| Polestar 4 | Hangzhou Bay, China; Busan, South Korea | China was the initial production location; South Korean assembly was introduced for selected export markets. |
| Polestar 5 | Planned production in China | This high-performance GT is a forthcoming model, so its final production arrangements may change before regular deliveries. |
That means the short answer is not “Sweden” or “China.” Polestar is a Swedish-founded brand with cars built in multiple countries, including China, South Korea and the United States.

China: the main production base for Polestar
China has been Polestar’s principal manufacturing base. The company’s early cars were closely connected to Volvo’s Chinese production network and to Geely’s broader manufacturing infrastructure.
Polestar 1: Chengdu
The Polestar 1 was built at a dedicated facility in Chengdu, Sichuan. It was a low-volume, carbon-fiber-bodied grand tourer with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Production ended after the planned run, so a new Polestar 1 is no longer being assembled.
Polestar 2: Luqiao
The Polestar 2 has been produced at the Luqiao plant in Zhejiang, China. The facility is operated by Volvo Cars and has also built Volvo models. The Polestar 2 uses the Compact Modular Architecture shared within the Geely-Volvo ecosystem, although that does not make it a Volvo-badged vehicle.
Used-car buyers should check the vehicle identification number rather than assume that every Polestar 2 has the same origin. Production details can vary by model year, battery version and destination market.
Polestar 3: Chengdu
Polestar 3 production began in Chengdu. This electric SUV is based on technology developed within the Volvo and Geely group, but it is sold and branded as a Polestar.

Polestar production in the United States
Polestar 3 assembly was added at Volvo Cars’ Ridgeville plant near Charleston, South Carolina. The factory already produces Volvo vehicles and became an additional production location for the Polestar 3.
This matters to U.S. shoppers because a Polestar 3 built in South Carolina is not necessarily identical in country-of-origin terms to an earlier example built in China. The production location can affect:
- the country-of-origin label;
- import tariffs and landed cost;
- eligibility for federal or state incentives;
- parts and battery sourcing;
- the vehicle’s build date and specification.
Do not determine eligibility for a tax credit from the badge alone. Incentive rules can depend on final assembly, battery components, critical minerals, purchase date, income and vehicle price. Use the VIN and the current IRS or government guidance for the specific vehicle.
Where is the Polestar 4 made?
The Polestar 4 initially entered production at Geely’s Hangzhou Bay plant in China. Polestar has also added production in Busan, South Korea, through a manufacturing arrangement involving Renault Korea. South Korean production is intended to support certain export markets, particularly North America.
A Polestar 4 sold in one country may therefore have a different assembly origin from a superficially identical car sold elsewhere. The listing, window sticker and VIN are more reliable than general statements such as “Polestars are made in China” or “the Polestar 4 is Korean.”

Is Polestar a Swedish company?
Polestar has Swedish roots and maintains its headquarters and design identity in Gothenburg, Sweden. It began as a Swedish motorsport and performance-tuning business associated with Volvo, then developed into Volvo’s performance sub-brand before becoming a standalone electric-car marque in 2017.

“Swedish” can describe Polestar’s brand heritage, design leadership and headquarters. It does not mean that every Polestar is assembled in Sweden. In fact, Polestar’s principal vehicle production has taken place outside Sweden.
Who owns Polestar today?
Polestar is owned through Polestar Automotive Holding UK PLC, the publicly listed company behind the Polestar brand. Its shares trade publicly, so it is not accurate to describe Polestar as a wholly owned subsidiary of Volvo Cars.
The company is nevertheless part of the wider Geely-controlled automotive sphere. Chinese entrepreneur Li Shufu founded and controls Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, whose portfolio includes Geely Auto, Volvo Cars, Zeekr, Lotus and other automotive businesses. Geely-related entities are major shareholders and strategic partners of Polestar.
The ownership relationship is easier to understand as three separate layers:

| Polestar | The standalone electric-vehicle brand and listed operating company. |
| Volvo Cars | Polestar’s former corporate parent and continuing technology, manufacturing and commercial partner, but not its sole owner. |
| Geely ecosystem | The broader group with major influence, shareholder relationships, shared platforms and manufacturing links. |
Volvo Cars was an important early owner and helped establish Polestar as an independent brand. It later reduced its stake and ceased to be the company’s controlling owner. That is why “Polestar is owned by Volvo” is now an outdated shorthand.
Does Geely own Polestar?
Geely is the key industrial and strategic force behind Polestar, but the legal answer requires care. Polestar is a separate publicly traded company with multiple shareholders, rather than a simple wholly owned Geely subsidiary.
Geely-related investment companies hold significant stakes and provide access to vehicle platforms, factories, engineering resources and supply chains. In practical terms, Geely has much more influence over Polestar than an ordinary minority investor. In legal terms, however, Polestar remains its own listed corporate entity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is Polestar the same as Volvo?
No. Polestar and Volvo Cars are separate brands and companies, even though they share history and have worked together extensively.
Their links can be visible in:
- vehicle platforms and electrical architecture;
- powertrain and software development;
- factories;
- supplier networks;
- some service and retail arrangements.
Shared engineering or production does not change the brand on the vehicle title. A Polestar 3 is a Polestar, not a Volvo XC90 with a different badge.

How to find where a specific Polestar was built
- Get the VIN. Use the 17-character vehicle identification number from the windshield, registration or seller.
- Check the door-jamb label. The certification label commonly identifies the final assembly country and manufacturer information.
- Read the window sticker. For a U.S.-market vehicle, the Monroney label generally includes final assembly information.
- Ask a Polestar retailer or service centre. Provide the VIN and ask for the build sheet or manufacturing record.
- Check the model year. Production can move between factories during a model’s life, so an online article about the model is not proof of a particular car’s origin.
Common mistakes about Polestar’s origin and ownership
- “Every Polestar is made in Sweden.” False. Sweden is the brand’s home, not its only assembly location.
- “Every Polestar is made in China.” No longer correct. Polestar 3 production has been added in South Carolina, and Polestar 4 production has been established in South Korea for selected markets.
- “Volvo owns Polestar outright.” Outdated. Volvo helped create and develop the brand but is no longer its sole or controlling owner.
- “Polestar has nothing to do with Volvo.” Also wrong. The companies continue to share industrial, technical and manufacturing connections.
- “A Geely platform makes a Polestar a Geely car.” The companies may share architecture and suppliers, but Polestar is a separate marque with its own products, software strategy and corporate reporting.
