There was no fully self-driving consumer car for sale in the United States in 2025. The strongest choices used advanced driver assistance, not autonomous driving. Tesla calls its system Full Self-Driving (Supervised); GM and Ford offer hands-free Level 2 systems; Nissan and Lexus provide more limited highway assistance; and Mercedes-Benz is the notable exception with a tightly restricted Level 3 system.
That distinction matters. In a Level 2 vehicle, the driver must watch the road, remain responsible for the trip, and be ready to steer or brake immediately. This guide ranks the best 2025 systems by useful road coverage, hands-free capability, monitoring, limitations, and the type of driving they actually suit.

1. Tesla with Full Self-Driving (Supervised): best overall road coverage
Recommended models: 2025 Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck, subject to the vehicle’s configuration, hardware, software version and region.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is the broadest consumer-facing system in this group. Unlike a conventional highway-only assist system, it is designed to operate on residential streets, city roads and highways. It can follow a route, steer through turns and intersections, handle roundabouts, change lanes and assist with parking. That makes it the most versatile choice if your priority is having the system help across more of an ordinary trip.

It is still Level 2 assistance. Tesla does not turn the car into a driverless vehicle, and the driver must monitor the surroundings and intervene whenever necessary. Construction zones, blocked cameras, poor visibility, unsuitable lighting, narrow roads and unclear paths are all situations in which the system may struggle. At intersections, the driver must decide whether it is safe to stop or continue rather than assuming the car has correctly interpreted the situation.
How to enable Tesla FSD (Supervised)
- Open
Controls. - Select
Self-Driving. - Enable
Full Self-Driving (Supervised). - When the feature is available, tap Start Self-Driving. Depending on the model and software version, the right scroll-wheel button may also be used.
Repeated inattentiveness warnings have consequences. The current Model Y owner’s manual says five strikeouts can suspend Autosteer and FSD (Supervised) for a week. A strikeout may be forgiven after 3.5 days without another one. Older Tesla vehicles may also lack the same feature set as newer cars because hardware and AI-computer versions differ.
Tesla’s support documentation says availability varies by model, configuration, country, software and hardware. Confirm the exact car’s computer version and feature eligibility before treating a used Tesla as equivalent to a new one.

2. GM Super Cruise: best for hands-free highway driving
Recommended 2025 vehicles: Chevrolet Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado 1500 and Silverado EV; GMC Acadia, Yukon, Sierra 1500, Sierra EV and Hummer EV models; Cadillac Lyriq, Escalade, Escalade IQ, CT4, CT5, XT6 and Optiq; and Buick Enclave, depending on trim and equipment.
Super Cruise is the strongest choice for drivers who mainly want a relaxed freeway commute or long highway journey. On mapped, compatible roads, it controls steering, braking and acceleration without requiring the driver’s hands on the wheel. A dedicated driver-monitoring camera checks that the driver is paying attention, and the system can perform automatic lane changes when it detects a slower vehicle. The driver can also initiate a lane change with the turn signal.
The trade-off is operating coverage. Super Cruise is not a Tesla-style city-street system. It depends on compatible-road maps, visible lane markings, sensor availability and suitable weather. It can disengage or become unavailable when those requirements are not met, so the driver must remain ready to resume control.
Super Cruise also requires an active service plan or trial. The hardware may be installed in the car, but that does not necessarily mean the feature remains usable indefinitely without a connectivity subscription. Check the vehicle’s trim, model year, included trial and current plan before buying.

Independent testing adds useful context. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the tested Super Cruise safety features better than several competing systems, but the overall safeguards on the tested 2023–24 GMC Sierra were rated marginal. Hands-free capability is therefore not the same thing as a top safety rating.
3. Ford BlueCruise: best hands-free option for Ford and Lincoln owners
Recommended 2025 vehicles: Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150, F-150 Lightning, Explorer, Expedition and Lincoln models equipped with BlueCruise hardware, subject to trim and market availability.
BlueCruise is a hands-free Level 2 system for designated hands-free Blue Zones. Ford currently lists more than 130,000 miles of prequalified North American roads, although coverage is map-dependent and can change as Ford updates its database. It is a good fit for a buyer who already wants a Ford or Lincoln and spends most of the driving time on controlled-access highways.
How to set up BlueCruise
- On the center display, open
Settings>Driver Assistance>Adaptive Cruise Control. - Select
Lane Centering with Hands-Freeand enable the available options. Some SYNC 4 vehicles showFeaturesinstead ofSettings. - Press the adaptive-cruise-control button on the steering wheel.
- When the system is available, the instrument panel turns blue and displays the hands-free icon.
BlueCruise can stop working because of poor lane markings, merges, construction, outdated map data, glare, rain, snow or fog. A spare tire, tire-pressure warning, modified or covered steering wheel, or blocked driver-monitoring camera can also prevent operation. It cannot be used while towing.

Ford’s current listed prices are $49.99 per month, $495 per year or $2,495 as a one-time purchase at vehicle purchase, subject to change. If the driver ignores repeated “Watch the road” alerts, Ford says the vehicle can slow to approximately 5 mph. Dark or reflective sunglasses, a mask, a hat or leaning outside the camera’s view can trigger those warnings.
4. Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT: best for a genuine Level 3 experience
Recommended vehicles: compatible 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and EQS Sedan configurations equipped with the required DRIVE PILOT hardware and package.
DRIVE PILOT is the most technically advanced consumer system in this group because Mercedes-Benz describes it as SAE Level 3 conditional automation. In its approved operating domain, the system performs the driving task and the driver may take their eyes and hands off the road. The driver must still be available to take over when the vehicle requests it.

That description should not be mistaken for unrestricted autonomy. In California and parts of Nevada, DRIVE PILOT is limited to approved divided freeways, clear lane markings, daytime conditions, clear weather, traffic moving at speeds up to 40 mph, and other map, sensor, camera and network requirements. It is designed primarily for slow traffic and congestion, not for an entire road trip.
It may refuse to engage in heavy rain, fog, low temperatures, construction zones, near intersections or at-grade crossings, on unapproved roads, or whenever its required data sources are unavailable. Activation uses a button on the steering wheel after the driver display confirms availability. For most buyers, DRIVE PILOT is best viewed as a specialized traffic-jam feature rather than a reason to expect driverless travel.
5. Nissan Ariya with ProPILOT Assist 2.0: best alternative for hands-off freeway assistance
Recommended vehicle: 2025 Nissan Ariya equipped with available ProPILOT Assist 2.0.
ProPILOT Assist 2.0 can provide hands-off, foot-off assistance in certain freeway situations, including stop-and-go traffic. It can help with lane changes, but the 2025 Ariya brochure says the driver must put their hands on the wheel and activate the turn signal for a lane change. The system depends on eligible freeway conditions and high-definition map data, so it is not an all-road substitute for Tesla FSD (Supervised).
The Ariya also offers ProPILOT Park, which can control steering, accelerator, brakes, gear selection and the parking brake for parallel and back-in parking.

Relevant settings are found under Settings > Driver Assistance. The menu includes options such as Lane Centering Assist, Lane Change Assist, Emergency Assist, Driver Monitor and Speed Limit Offset (for ProPILOT Assist 2.0). The speed-limit offset can be adjusted from -5 mph to +5 mph.

Lexus Teammate combines Advanced Drive for supported highways with Advanced Park for automated parking. Advanced Drive is a limited-use Level 2 system, so the driver must stay attentive even when the system is steering, braking and accelerating.
The LS’s strongest argument is not all-road capability. It is the integration of driver monitoring and safety measures. In IIHS testing, the tested Lexus Teammate system earned an acceptable overall safeguard rating, ahead of the tested Ford, Tesla, BMW, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Volvo systems in that comparison. That rating applies to the tested system and should not be treated as a universal score for every Lexus software version.
The 2025 LS brochure says Teammate requires a trial or subscription. Confirm the included period and renewal cost before choosing the feature as part of the purchase decision.

IIHS evaluates partial-automation safeguards rather than simply asking whether a vehicle can drive hands-free. Its checks include driver monitoring, attention reminders, emergency procedures, lane-change behavior, adaptive-cruise resumption, cooperative steering and whether important safety systems remain active.

These are ratings for specific tested vehicles and software, not blanket ratings for every 2025 model or later update. IIHS says a good partial-automation safeguard system should monitor both the driver’s gaze and hand position, provide visual and audible alerts, stop the vehicle if the driver does not respond, require driver initiation or confirmation of automated lane changes, avoid automatically resuming after a long stop when the driver is not looking, and restrict operation above 80 mph.

How to choose the right system
- Start with your roads. Choose Tesla if city and residential-road coverage matters. Choose Super Cruise, BlueCruise, Ariya ProPILOT 2.0 or Lexus Teammate primarily for mapped highways.
- Decide whether hands-free operation is important. GM, Ford, Nissan Ariya and Mercedes-Benz offer hands-off capability in their respective operating domains. Hands-free does not mean unattended.
- Check the exact trim and hardware. These features are often optional and may vary by model, model year, package, region, cameras and computing hardware.
- Price the subscription. GM, Ford and Lexus may require an active plan or trial. A used vehicle’s original trial may have expired.
- Learn the disengagement triggers. Construction, poor markings, bad weather, blocked cameras, map gaps and driver-monitoring alerts can end a trip’s assistance without much warning.
- Test the monitoring system before buying. Sit normally in the driver’s seat and verify that the camera can see your face and eyes. Sunglasses, masks, hats and steering-wheel modifications can affect operation.
