MINI is a BMW Group brand. For the fifth-generation, petrol-powered MINI Cooper introduced in 2024, BMW Group describes a three-site production chain in England: Swindon makes body pressings and sub-assemblies, Hams Hall builds the petrol engines, and Oxford handles body-shell production, paint and final assembly. That does not establish where every Cooper variant is built.
Who owns MINI?
MINI is a brand within BMW Group, not a stand-alone automaker. BMW Group’s brands page lists MINI among its brands. BMW AG acquired the Rover Group in 1994, then sold Rover in 2000 while retaining MINI, according to the group’s corporate history. In short, BMW AG is the parent company and MINI is one of BMW Group’s brands.
Where is the current petrol MINI Cooper made?
BMW Group’s 11 March 2024 announcement about the fifth-generation MINI Cooper identifies three English plants in its production chain. The sites handle different stages, so “made in Oxford” is shorthand for final assembly rather than every component being produced there.

These locations and roles are described in BMW Group’s production-start announcement. Oxford is the final assembly site named for that Cooper; the engine and body components also come from the other British plants.

How much MINI production takes place in Britain?
In an anniversary release dated 23 April 2026, BMW Group reported that 4,671,664 MINIs had been built in Britain since 2001. The company also reported more than 3,000 employees across the Oxford and Swindon manufacturing hubs, around 800 MINIs produced per day, and one new MINI leaving Oxford’s line every 78 seconds. These are BMW Group figures, stated with the scope and date given by the company—not independent production measurements. Are all MINI Cooper variants made in England?
Not necessarily. The three-site chain above is specifically for the fifth-generation petrol Cooper described by BMW Group in March 2024. It should not be generalized to every Cooper drivetrain, model year or sales market.

In September 2023, BMW Group announced that Oxford was preparing to build the all-electric MINI Cooper 3-door and MINI Aceman from 2026, with a plan for Oxford production to become exclusively electric by 2030. That announcement documents plans at the time; it does not confirm whether the 2026 production start has occurred or give a current, model-by-model allocation. BMW Group’s 2021 production-history page also discussed MINI production in China from 2023 onward, but it does not identify which current Cooper versions are made there. The 2021 history page is historical context, not a current origin list. The available information here does not establish that all electric Coopers, all Coopers sold in a particular market or all current Coopers come from one country.

How to confirm where a specific MINI Cooper was built
For a particular car, check its vehicle production information or ask MINI to verify it using the VIN. To make an origin answer precise, identify the model, model year, drivetrain (petrol or electric) and sales market. The production details above do not settle current electric Cooper allocation across those categories.
