Rivian has not announced a specific R3 production start or customer-delivery date. The company has said R3 and R3X deliveries will begin after R2; its later target for vehicle production in Georgia in late 2028 applies to the midsize platform at that facility, not explicitly to R3.
What Rivian has said about the R3 timeline
Rivian introduced the R2, R3 and R3X on March 7, 2024. The R3 is a midsize crossover, while the R3X is its performance variant. Rivian said deliveries of both R3 models would start after R2 to allow a smooth R2 launch and rapid ramp, but did not give a year or say how long afterward. Rivian’s announcement therefore establishes an order of launches, not an R3 calendar date.
How to read the late-2028 Georgia target
Rivian’s Q1 2026 earnings presentation says vehicle production at its Georgia facility is expected to begin in late 2028. The presentation describes that facility as serving the midsize platform, with planned initial capacity of 300,000 vehicles annually. Neither the production target nor the capacity figure is assigned specifically to R3, so they do not establish an R3 start date or production volume. Where R2 fits in
R2 is the program Rivian has placed ahead of R3. In its Q4 2025 shareholder letter, Rivian reported that its first R2 manufacturing validation build took place in mid-January at the Normal, Illinois factory, using production tools and processes. What remains unannounced
- A specific R3 production start date and customer-delivery date.
- How much time will separate R2 deliveries from R3 deliveries.
- When Rivian will open orders or reservations for R3.
- Which factory will build the first R3 vehicles.
Until Rivian gives those details, an exact R3 launch year would be speculation. The company’s March 2024 announcement also said R3 supports native NACS DC fast charging and CCS charging with an adapter.
