Was BMW really charging $18 a month for heated seats?
Yes, but the headline needs geographic and historical context. In 2022, BMW offered heated-seat activation through its digital store in some markets. Reports tied the roughly $18-a-month figure to South Korea; prices and subscription durations differed by region, so it was not a universal BMW price. BMWBLOG reported on the regional offer.
The offer concerned access to a feature through software, not a blanket charge imposed on every BMW driver. Whether the car had the necessary equipment, whether an owner activated it through a regional digital store, and whether heated seats were ordered with the car are separate questions.
Did U.S. BMW owners have to subscribe?
BMW North America said factory-ordered heated seats in the United States would not be affected by Functions on Demand. In a statement reproduced by BMWBLOG on July 14, 2022, the company said: “Options like heated seats are ordered on over 90% of the BMW’s sold in the USA.” That is BMW’s statement about U.S. sales, not a figure that should be applied to other markets. BMW described U.S. Functions on Demand as a digital aftersales service for selected software-based functions that use data and sensors from hardware already in the vehicle. Its examples were BMW Drive Recorder and BMW Remote Engine Start. BMW said customers could test or purchase such functions for a term or for the vehicle’s life, and characterized the service as not changing features ordered when the vehicle was purchased. Did BMW discontinue the heated-seat subscription?
Later reporting says BMW stopped charging a subscription for heated seats in 2023, while continuing to offer other paid on-demand services. In a February 6, 2026 report, TechRadar quoted BMW head of product communications Alexandra Landers describing the heated-seat and steering-wheel subscription approach as “probably not the best way to start with it.” The report also says BMW clarified that heated seats ordered with a vehicle remain operational for the life of that vehicle. - Check the original equipment and purchase details. If heated seats were ordered with the vehicle, BMW North America said the U.S. Functions on Demand service did not change that factory option.
- Check BMW’s local configurator, digital store, or dealer. Ask about your specific vehicle’s equipment and current feature availability rather than assuming a past regional offer is still available.
