The change happened gradually, varying by country, make, model, trim and model year: some vehicles lost the feature in the early 2010s, while selected cars still offered it into the early 2020s. A 2024 report called the Subaru Forester the last new car with a CD player in its market, but that is a market-specific claim—not a worldwide cutoff.
Why there was no single cutoff year
CD players disappeared through staggered model updates and equipment changes rather than one industry-wide decision. A player might be standard on one trim, optional on another, or unavailable in a particular market. The date a model dropped it therefore does not establish when all cars—or even every version of that model—lost CD playback.
What can be said is that the transition was clearly underway by the early-to-mid 2010s. By 2015, some models had dropped their players, even as other high-volume brands continued to sell cars with them.
How the phase-out unfolded
Early-to-mid 2010s: removals in Australia
CarsGuide reported several Australian examples: the Peugeot 208 lost its CD player in September 2012; some Holden Barina models followed in December 2012; the Holden Colorado in November 2013; and the Citroen Grand Picasso in February 2014. In 2015, the Hyundai i30 Active dropped the feature in April and the Kia Sorento in June. These are model-specific dates, not a national or global cutoff.

The shift could also change where playback hardware sat. CarsGuide described Skoda’s Fabia rollout of app-based audio systems that moved the CD player to the glovebox, illustrating that a player’s disappearance from the dashboard did not always mean it had vanished from the vehicle.
2016 model year: Hyundai’s announced US shift
In January 2015, The Korea Times reported Hyundai’s plan to begin replacing CD systems with smartphone-connected infotainment in new US cars for the 2016 model year. The report said CD players would remain for domestic Korean customers and some other Asian markets at that time. That regional exception is another reason not to treat a company’s US timeline as a global one.

2017–2022: removals continued, with exceptions
An Opel spokesperson told auto motor und sport that CD players were removed from vehicle programs between 2017 and 2020 in response to demand and the spread of smartphone compatibility. The same outlet reported that GM would no longer equip any model with a CD player for the 2022 model year. Those milestones describe the reported companies and markets; they do not date the end of CD players across the entire industry.
Even as the feature became uncommon, it remained available on selected vehicles. In a 2021 European-market snapshot, auto motor und sport reported that BMW options had ended in the 2 Series Active Tourer and X1, and that the prior Mercedes S-Class generation was the last Mercedes described as orderable with a glovebox CD player. The article also listed selected Audi, Ford, Honda and Volkswagen models where CD playback remained available then. These examples are historical, not a guide to current equipment.

2024: the Subaru Forester claim
In September 2024, AutoWeek reported that the Subaru Forester had been the last new car with a CD player in its market, and that a generational change removed it. The report noted that the new Forester had not yet arrived in the Netherlands when it was published, so the final local sales timing differed. Read “last” as a claim about the market and time frame covered by that report—not as proof that no new car anywhere in the world had a CD player.
Why automakers moved away from built-in CD players
The reporting points mainly to changing customer demand and the move to connected infotainment. CarsGuide described systems designed to mirror phone interfaces and play audio over Bluetooth or USB. Hyundai’s US plan highlighted USB, Bluetooth, smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; Opel likewise cited smartphone compatibility as CD demand fell.

That evidence supports a gradual move toward phone-connected audio, not a single universal explanation such as dashboard space or manufacturing cost. Different automakers and markets made equipment changes on their own schedules.

- Use digital music: If supported, play music from a phone through Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Availability and functions vary by vehicle.
- Consider a portable CD player: Check that both the player and the car support a compatible connection, such as auxiliary input, USB or Bluetooth. Do not assume a USB port intended for charging or data will accept audio from a CD player.
- Look into a vehicle-specific retrofit: Confirm that a retrofit is offered for the exact make, model and year, and ask what installation involves. Auto motor und sport reported a Mercedes retrofit for existing vehicles in its 2021 article; that does not establish current availability for other cars.
The available reporting documents these approaches but does not test or rank portable players, adapters or retrofit installations.
