There is no single spark plug socket size that fits every engine. A 5/8-inch (16 mm) socket is the most common answer, and 13/16-inch (about 21 mm) is another size you will run into. Some plugs use less common 14 mm or 18 mm hexes. The reliable way to choose is to match the socket to the hex on the plug you are removing or replacing, and to confirm that against the plug’s part number or your engine’s service information before you buy or use a socket.
Common spark plug socket sizes
The socket grips the six-sided hex on the body of the plug. The sizes below are the ones that appear in the guidance reviewed for this article. None of them applies to every engine.
| Hex size | Metric equivalent | How it is described in the sources |
|---|---|---|
| 5/8 inch | 16 mm | Common. NGK-hosted guidance (NGK Auto, published 31 August 2026) gives it as the short answer for many NGK plugs. |
| 13/16 inch | About 21 mm | Another frequent size. NGK’s 2019 catalog specification chart lists hex size as a plug specification and uses a 13/16-inch hex as its example. |
| 14 mm | 14 mm | Less common. Noted in NGK-hosted guidance as a possibility, not a default. |
| 18 mm | 18 mm | Less common. Noted in NGK-hosted guidance as a possibility, not a default. |
How to confirm the right size before you buy
Work through these steps in order. The first check that gives you a definite size ends the search.
- Read the plug part number. Manufacturers print the part number on the plug body or insulator. Note the full code, including any suffix.
- Look up that part number in the manufacturer’s catalog. NGK and DENSO both publish plug identification and specification information. The hex size is listed among the plug’s dimensions.
- Check the service information for your engine. If the old plug is missing or the code is unreadable, the vehicle or equipment service manual gives the specified plug and its hex size.
- Test-fit the socket before you put force on it. A correct socket seats fully on the hex with no wobble. If it rattles, it is too large. If it will not go down over the hex, it is too small or the wrong shape.
Why thread size and brand do not settle the question
Thread diameter and reach are separate from hex size. Two plugs with the same thread can use different hex sizes, and two brands can list different hexes for the same engine. Brand alone is therefore not a reliable guide. Use the part number or the engine’s specification instead.

Reach, depth, and clearance
Hex size tells you only whether the socket fits the plug. Whether you can reach the plug is a separate question, and the answer depends on the engine. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal extension length or socket depth. Check the service information for your specific vehicle or equipment, particularly where the plug sits deep in a cylinder head or behind other components.
Buying a single socket or a set
A dedicated spark plug socket in the verified size is the simplest purchase for one engine. If you service several engines, a multi-size set can cover the 5/8-inch, 13/16-inch, and other sizes your applications require. Buy the sizes you have confirmed, not the largest set available, because an unused size does not help you.

- 360° SWIVEL SPARK PLUG SOCKET: Spark plug socket features a 360° rotating joint, which enhances the spark plug socket’s flexibility, allowing you to easily access hard-to-reach areas for superior flexibility and efficient, especially in tight engine bays. This design significantly improves work efficiency, making spark plug removal and installation much easier and more convenient, particularly in confined spaces. Built-in rubber protective cover to protect the ceramic body
- HEAVY-DUTY MAGNETIC CORE DESIGN: Spark plug tool is equipped with a strong magnetic core that securely holds the spark plug in place, preventing it from falling or getting damaged during use. The magnetic core design ensures the spark plug stays stable during installation and removal, preventing it from dropping into the engine bay and eliminating unnecessary hassle and work interruptions
- 12-POINTS SOCKET WITH THIN-WALL DESIGN: The socket features a 12-point thin-wall design that provides excellent torque transfer and grip. This design not only enhances stability in tight spaces but also reduces the risk of rounding off corners. 12-points socket can be inserted into a hexagonal nut faster than 6-points socket. It's an essential tool for spark plug removal, especially in confined spaces that require high precision
- 3/8-INCH DRIVE SOCKET: Magnetic spark plug socket is equipped with a 3/8-inch standard drive interface, making it compatible with most common ratchets and extension bars to meet a wide range of work needs. Knurled grip design can help you keep a tight grip to minimize the possibility of slipping in the middle of a job and reduce the chance of hand fatigue
- HIGH-QUALITY CR-V STEEL MADE: The socket is made from heat-treated CR-V steel with a manganese phosphate black finish surface, providing outstanding durability and resistance to wear and corrosion. The manganese phosphate black coating not only prevents rust and corrosion but also makes the tool easy to clean, ensuring optimal performance in various work environments, making it suitable for long-term use. The socket also has laser-etched size markings for quick and easy identification
Troubleshooting a socket that does not work
- The socket will not go over the hex. The size is wrong, or the hex has been damaged by someone else’s over-tightening. Confirm the part number and try the next size up or down only after checking it.
- The socket rattles or slips. It is too large for the hex. Switch to the size that seats without play.
- The socket fits but cannot reach the plug. The problem is reach or clearance, not size. Use the extension or depth required by your engine’s service information.
- The socket slips on a plug that appears to fit. The hex may be rounded. Stop and replace the plug or address the damage before applying more torque.
For a reader whose plug needs replacing, the replacement must match the engine. Confirm the part number first, and then choose the socket to suit.
