The factory is in Grünheide (Mark), Brandenburg, southeast of Berlin—not in the city itself. At the opening event, Tesla handed over the first 30 Model Y vehicles to customers.
When did Tesla open the Berlin Gigafactory?
The opening ceremony and production-start event took place on 22 March 2022. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attended, and Brandenburg’s state government records the first customer handovers at the event. The date marks the start of production at the site; it does not mean the factory had already reached its planned capacity.
Brandenburg said Tesla announced its investment on 12 November 2019, 861 days before the production-start event. The state’s announcement of the event is available from the Land Brandenburg State Chancellery. Scholz’s speech identifies the occasion as the opening of the factory in Grünheide on that date; the Federal Government transcript includes his remark: “Die Elektromobilität wird die Mobilität der Zukunft prägen, und das ist heute hier klar” (“Electromobility will shape the mobility of the future, and that is clear here today,” translated from German).
Where is Tesla’s Berlin factory?
The factory, officially called Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, is in Grünheide (Mark), in the state of Brandenburg, southeast of Berlin. Brandenburg’s account describes construction beginning in spring 2020 on a site of 300 hectares. It also said a battery-cell factory was being built there. See the state’s site and project overview.

What happened at the opening?
The event marked production beginning and the first customer deliveries—not merely a ribbon-cutting. Brandenburg’s state government says Elon Musk handed over 30 Model Y cars. The state’s account also records Minister-President Dietmar Woidke’s welcome: “Dass Sie sich für Brandenburg entschieden haben, ist gut für Tesla und gut für die Zukunftsregion Berlin-Brandenburg” (“Your decision to choose Brandenburg is good for Tesla and good for the future region of Berlin-Brandenburg,” translated from German).
What does Tesla make in Grünheide?
The site makes Model Y vehicles and battery cells. Tesla describes Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg as its first European manufacturing location and the first location in Europe to make battery cells in-house alongside electric vehicles. Its factory page says the site produces hundreds of thousands of Model Y vehicles and millions of battery cells, but gives no dated, independently audited annual production total. That company description should not be confused with a verified output figure for a particular year.

Was the factory planned to build 500,000 cars a year?
Brandenburg reported a planned first-stage capacity of up to 500,000 Model Y vehicles. That is a capacity plan, not evidence that the factory produced 500,000 vehicles in a year or was operating at that rate when it opened. The distinction matters: production started in March 2022, while reaching planned capacity required a subsequent ramp-up.
Was the factory approved before construction began?
No. Brandenburg announced final approval for the car and battery-cell factories on 4 March 2022, but construction had begun earlier under 19 authorizations for early measures and at the investor’s risk. The state’s final-approval announcement describes that sequence. The March approval was not the start of all construction.

What local issues surrounded the factory and its expansion?
At the 2022 opening, Brandenburg officials presented the project as an important investment and source of regional industrial activity and jobs. The state also said local infrastructure—including childcare, housing and rail connections—would need further development. Those were the government’s stated expectations and needs at the time, not a guarantee that all projected benefits or improvements had already materialized.
In 2024, the Associated Press reported opposition to an expansion proposal involving a freight depot, warehouses and a kindergarten. Environmental activists and local groups raised concerns about forest clearing and water supply. AP said the proposals would entail clearing more than 100 hectares; this was a reported proposal, not confirmation that the clearing took place or that the plans received final approval.
