Use L to help control speed on a steep descent
On a long or steep downhill stretch, a lower transmission range may help the vehicle slow through engine braking, reducing how much you need to rely on the brakes. It does not replace the brakes: you may still need them to maintain a safe speed.
Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. owner manual advises drivers towing a trailer to “Reduce speed and shift to a lower gear before you start down a long or steep downgrade.” The manual also warns that excessive braking can overheat the brakes and reduce their effectiveness. What L means—and why it varies
On many automatic transmissions, “L” refers to a low range or mode that favors lower gearing. The effect may be to hold a lower gear, limit how high the transmission shifts, or otherwise provide lower gearing; the exact behavior depends on the vehicle and transmission. Do not assume that every L position selects or holds one specific gear.

Compared with “D,” which is intended for ordinary driving and allows the transmission to select gears automatically, L gives the vehicle a lower-gearing option for circumstances where the driver’s manual recommends it. The selector label alone does not tell you the permitted speed, shift procedure, or operating limits.
Hill climbing and towing depend on the vehicle
Some vehicles recommend L for hilly or mountainous roads or when towing. Ford’s 2026 Explorer Owner’s Manual, in its section on “Automatic Transmission Positions – Low (L) – Police,” recommends the mode for those conditions. Guidance can differ even in towing situations. Hyundai’s 2025 owner manual says to use D in a particular heavy-trailer case to minimize transmission heat. Follow the instructions for your own vehicle and load rather than assuming that towing always calls for L. Hyundai 2025 owner manual
Do not confuse transmission L with transfer-case 4L
A normal automatic-transmission “L” and a four-wheel-drive transfer-case “4L” are different controls. Jeep’s 2021 Gladiator documentation describes 4L as an off-road four-wheel-drive range with its own operating limits and precautions. Check the manual before shifting
Because vehicles differ, there is no safe universal speed limit or shift procedure for selecting L. Some controls may reject or modify a requested shift, and some low ranges are restricted to particular conditions. Before using L, consult the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year, transmission, and selector. Slow down and follow its instructions; do not assume the vehicle will permit every requested shift.
The manufacturer guidance cited here gives practical recommendations, but no named statistic that materially informs this general explanation. A vehicle-specific manual is the authority for your car’s procedure and limits.
