A limited-slip differential (LSD) lets a vehicle’s driven wheels turn at different speeds in a corner while resisting excessive difference when one wheel loses traction. By limiting that imbalance, it can help useful drive reach the wheel with grip. The mechanism may use clutch packs, helical gears, or an electronically controlled clutch; how it behaves and what it needs for service depend on the specific unit.
What a differential does—and what an LSD changes
The left and right driven wheels travel different distances in a turn, so they need to rotate at different speeds. An open differential allows that speed difference. But when one wheel has much less grip, it can spin while the other gets limited useful drive.
An LSD adds a mechanism that resists excessive difference between the axle sides, helping direct usable torque toward the wheel with traction. Ford describes the intended effect as transmitting driving force to the wheel or tire with the most traction: Ford’s limited-slip differential glossary. An LSD does not create grip, guarantee equal torque at both wheels, or necessarily lock the wheels together.
How the main LSD designs work
The shared goal is to limit wheel-speed or torque imbalance, but the mechanism and control strategy differ.

Clutch-pack LSD
A clutch-type LSD uses friction plates to couple the two sides to some degree. Under load, the clutches resist relative movement, limiting how freely one side can spin compared with the other. The amount and feel of that resistance depend on the unit’s design, setup, and condition.
Clutch plates can wear, and some units can be serviced with application-specific parts. For example, Ford Performance lists Traction-Lok applications with carbon-fiber clutch plates and rebuild kits; those parts are not generic fitment recommendations. See the Ford Performance differential catalog.

Helical-gear or Torsen-style LSD
A helical design uses the geometry and internal forces of meshing gears to bias torque rather than using a clutch pack. Chevrolet’s 2005 SSR material describes Torsen helical side and planet gears. A separate 2000 Camaro technical document describes its Zexel Torsen unit as using parallel-axis helical gearing without clutches or cone clutches. These details describe those documented designs, not every differential sold as a helical or Torsen-type unit.
Electronically controlled LSD
An eLSD varies a coupling mechanism using electronic control. In the 2021 Corvette Z51, Chevrolet describes a hydraulically actuated clutch inside the transaxle, with sensor inputs and variable engagement. The manual specifies a range of 0 to 2250 N·m (1659 lb-ft) of breakaway torque between the rear wheels for that particular system—not a general eLSD rating. Its description is in the 2021 Corvette owner’s manual.

Other vehicles use different layouts. Ford’s 2019 Focus ST announcement, for example, describes a hydraulically activated clutch system at the front axle. These examples show why “eLSD” does not identify one universal hardware arrangement or specification.
What an LSD can—and cannot—do on slippery surfaces
An LSD can help when traction differs between the driven wheels, but it cannot make a tire grip a surface that offers no traction. Its behavior varies by mechanism and vehicle. Chevrolet’s 2021 Corvette owner’s manual says that model’s mechanical LSD can help on snow, mud, ice, sand, or gravel, and that it behaves like a standard axle most of the time. That is guidance for the cited Corvette, not a promise that every LSD will perform the same way in every condition.

Choosing between LSD types
There is no universally best design. The relevant choice depends on the vehicle, intended use, calibration, service needs, and exact fitment. Compare the actual unit and application rather than assuming that a label alone predicts behavior.
| Design | How it limits imbalance | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Clutch-pack | Friction plates resist relative movement between axle sides. | Clutch condition and application-specific setup or service matter. |
| Helical/Torsen-style | Gear geometry and internal forces bias torque. | Documented examples use helical gearing without clutch packs; confirm the construction of the specific unit. |
| Electronically controlled clutch | Control logic varies clutch engagement. | Sensor inputs, axle location, actuation, and specifications vary by vehicle. |
For a replacement unit or rebuild parts, verify the vehicle, axle, spline count, and other fitment details against the manufacturer’s application information. Catalog entries are specific to the listed applications; they do not establish compatibility with other axles.

Fluid, friction modifier, and service
There is no universal LSD fluid or additive rule. Some clutch-type differentials call for a friction modifier, but that does not mean every LSD needs one. Ford identifies its friction modifier for clutch-type limited-slip differentials; Ford Performance also ties products and service parts to particular applications in its differential catalog.
Before choosing fluid or adding modifier, check the owner’s manual and the differential maker’s instructions for the exact vehicle and unit. Using a product simply because a vehicle has an LSD may be wrong for its design or specification.
