In the U.S., wheel bearing replacement estimates commonly land around $350–$500, but the price for your car can differ substantially. RepairPal’s estimate is $346–$504, excluding taxes, fees, and possible related repairs; Kelley Blue Book gives an all-vehicle average of about $350 per wheel, including parts and labor. There is no universal replacement mileage or interval: have a wheel bearing inspected when warning signs appear or after damage, and replace it when a diagnosis confirms wear or damage.
How much does wheel bearing replacement cost?
Two published U.S. estimates offer useful planning points, but they measure different things and are not a quote for a particular vehicle.
| Source and estimate | Parts | Labor | What it includes or excludes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RepairPal national estimate: $346–$504 (updated September 3, 2026) | $121–$172 estimated | $226–$331 estimated | Excludes taxes and fees, does not account for location, and may not include related repairs. |
| Kelley Blue Book: about $350 average per wheel across vehicles (accessed 2026) | Included in average | Included in average | KBB says its Fair Repair Range draws on analysis of actual repair orders. |
| KBB dealer estimate for a 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid near Buena Park, California: $767–$865 (accessed 2026) | $542–$600 estimated | $225–$265 estimated | A local, model-specific dealer estimate—not a national average. |
RepairPal’s listed vehicle examples also vary: its estimate for a Ford F-150 is $195–$245, while its Honda CR-V example is $402–$592. These are estimates for different vehicles and contexts, not a controlled comparison. The local CR-V Hybrid dealer estimate is higher still, illustrating why a national figure cannot predict your bill.
Your actual total depends on the year, make, model, trim and wheel position; the bearing design; local labor rates; the replacement part; and what diagnosis finds. Ask for an itemized quote that identifies parts, labor, diagnostic charges, taxes and fees, and any related work. Have the shop specify whether the quote covers a hub-and-bearing assembly or a separate bearing.

When does a wheel bearing need replacement?
The cited guidance does not establish a routine mileage or calendar interval. Kelley Blue Book says there is no standard maintenance schedule for replacing wheel bearings. Impact from potholes, curbs or speed bumps, and contamination from water, grit, salt or sand can damage them. An impact does not by itself prove a bearing has failed, but it is a reason to pay attention to new symptoms.

- Grinding, humming or rumbling sounds
- Knocking or clunking
- Looseness, wheel vibration or wobble
- ABS, traction-control or stability-control warning lights
These symptoms are prompts for diagnosis, not proof that the wheel bearing is the cause. Steering, suspension and other components can also need attention. RepairPal describes a technician confirming a noise on a road test, lifting and rotating the wheel, listening at the hub and checking for excessive play.
Do not ignore a confirmed worn hub
GM’s official wheel hub assembly guidance states: “Do not operate vehicle with a worn wheel hub assembly.” If a technician confirms that the hub is worn, follow their safety advice rather than continuing to drive as usual.

Why the repair price varies
Hub assembly or pressed-in bearing
Some vehicles use a bolt-on hub and bearing assembly that is replaced as a unit. Others have a bearing pressed into the steering knuckle; removing and installing it requires special equipment, such as a hydraulic press. The design affects both the part and the labor involved, so ask the shop which setup your vehicle has.
Vehicle fitment, location and work scope
A part that fits one model or axle position may not fit another. Confirm that the estimate names your exact vehicle and the diagnosed wheel. Also check whether it includes diagnosis and whether the shop has identified any related repairs. A dealer estimate for one model and location should not be treated as the going rate everywhere.

Can you replace a wheel bearing yourself?
RepairPal says a capable intermediate DIYer may be able to service some bolt-on sealed front bearings. A pressed-in bearing is more difficult and requires special tools, so RepairPal recommends leaving that work to a professional technician. The right choice depends on the design, your equipment and experience, and your ability to follow the vehicle-specific procedure safely.
If buying a replacement, treat “wheel hub bearing assembly” as a product category, not a universal part. Verify year, make, model, trim and axle position against the vehicle’s application before ordering; manufacturer parts catalogs list bearings and hub assemblies for specific applications.

- Give each shop the vehicle’s year, make, model and trim, and identify which wheel has been diagnosed.
- Ask whether it uses a bolt-on hub-and-bearing assembly or a pressed-in bearing, and which component the quote replaces.
- Request separate amounts for the part, labor, diagnosis, taxes and fees, plus any proposed related repairs.
- Confirm that the part is specified for your exact vehicle and wheel position.
- Compare quotes with the same work scope. Published national averages are reference points, not a universal fair price; a current local quote is the useful figure for your car.
A recall example—and its limits
A Timken notice dated January 30, 2025, and hosted by NHTSA concerns certain Model TP1HUBA hubs sold from November 1 through December 31, 2024. The notice says incorrectly threaded oil-plug ports could allow oil to leak, potentially causing bearing seizure or wheel separation and increasing crash risk; noise, vibration and harshness may appear. The notice called for inspection and, if needed, replacement of affected hubs at no charge. Its stated one-to-two-hour inspection and replacement time applies only to the remedy for those recalled hubs. This specific defect and remedy do not establish the failure rate or repair time for wheel bearings generally.
