In some trucks, both high- and low-range settings are locked. The labels are not standardized, so check the owner’s manual for your specific truck before selecting either mode.
What 4LOCK and 4LO mean
On the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500, 4H is called “Four-Wheel Drive Lock High Range.” The same manual describes 4L as low range. In this example, “lock” identifies a driveline configuration and “high range” identifies the gearing; “low” identifies a reduced gear range intended for slower driving.
Ford’s owner-manual guidance describes 4L as mechanically locked four-wheel drive with additional gearing for increased torque multiplication. That means a low-range setting can also be locked. The word “lock” by itself does not mean the truck is in low range.
These are examples, not a universal selector map. “4LOCK” can mean different things depending on the truck’s make, model, year, market, and transfer-case system.

How the modes differ in use
| Setting | What it does in the cited examples | Typical purpose |

| 4H / 4LOCK | Ram describes 4H as high range with the front and rear driveshafts locked together. | Four-wheel drive in high range for loose or slippery surfaces when extra traction is needed. |

Ford lists deep sand, steep grades, and pulling heavy objects as examples for 4L. Toyota’s 2025 Tacoma Hybrid full-time 4WD manual describes L4L as a low-speed, center-differential-locked position for steep hills, off-road driving, and hard pulling in sand, mud, or deep snow. The Toyota terminology belongs to that specific system and should not be assumed to match another truck’s selector.
When not to use either mode
Ram warns against using its 4H or 4L modes on dry, hard-surfaced roads. Ford gives the same warning for the modes described on its cited page. Using a locked 4WD setting on a surface where the tires cannot slip as needed can cause tire wear or drivetrain damage; follow the limitations in the manual for your vehicle.

Check the shifting procedure for your truck
Do not rely on a generic speed or gear position to shift into or out of 4LO. Ford’s cited online manual page says to be at 5 km/h or less and select Neutral before shifting to or from 4L. That is a Ford-specific instruction, not a general rule. Ram also directs drivers to meet the applicable speed and gear requirements. Use the manual supplied for your exact vehicle, since procedures vary.
