Transport Canada says impact damage—not a manufacturing defect—was responsible in most cases it reviewed. A small, unnoticed impact can weaken the glass and a later temperature change or vehicle jolt may trigger the break. Manufacturing defects can also cause breakage, but the available investigations do not establish one explanation for every incident.
Why can a sunroof break when no impact is obvious?
The break may happen later than the damage. A small impact can leave glass weakened without immediately making it crack or fall apart. A temperature change or a jolt while driving can then trigger the failure, so the driver sees a sudden shatter without having noticed an earlier impact. Transport Canada describes this as a plausible explanation for apparently spontaneous breakage; it does not mean every case has been diagnosed this way.
Transport Canada also says manufacturing defects sometimes cause sunroof glass to break. The cause of a specific failure cannot be determined from the fact that the glass shattered, or that the driver did not see a rock or other impact.
What have safety agencies found?
Transport Canada: impact damage was common in the cases it reviewed
In its December 9, 2021 consumer advisory, Transport Canada said that in most cases it reviewed, sunroof glass broke because of impact damage rather than a defect. The agency reported receiving 803 complaints about shattering sunroofs since 2012. That is a historical Canada-specific complaint count, not a current total or a measure of an individual vehicle’s risk. The advisory’s 2021 annual figure ran only through November 30 of that year. NHTSA: thousands of reported fractures, but no universal cause
NHTSA’s 2021 review covered panoramic glass roofs larger than 0.5 square meters across 97 models and 13 manufacturers, spanning model years 2006–2016 and about 10 million vehicles. Manufacturers reported more than 4,000 fractures. Those figures describe a defined historical review; they are not a current fleet-wide count or a probability that a particular car’s roof will break.
In its investigation of alleged breakage involving Kia Sorento panoramic roofs, NHTSA did not identify a root cause or trends by production date, failure season, or geography. The agency closed the investigation after finding insufficient evidence of a safety-related defect in the subject roofs. It explicitly cautioned that closure did not establish that no defect existed and said it could take further action if warranted by new evidence. Read NHTSA’s Engineering Analysis EA14-002.

These findings do not prove that all sunroofs are defect-free, nor do they establish a single mechanism—such as a particular glass inclusion or thermal stress alone—as the general cause. Complaint totals also cannot be used as failure rates without a comparable denominator and a defined time period.
Is a shattered sunroof dangerous?
Tempered glass is designed to break into smaller pieces, but broken glass can still cut, and a failure can create a driving hazard. NHTSA reported no crashes attributed to driver distraction in the broader roof-failure review. In the Kia investigation, it found no crashes or serious injuries tied to the alleged defect; a small number of reports described a cross brace entering the passenger compartment and causing minor injuries. These findings are limited to the events reviewed and do not mean a shattering roof is harmless.

Transport Canada said its complaint review had no reported serious injuries at the time of its 2021 advisory. That historical statement should not be read as a guarantee about every incident.

If the glass is damaged but still in place
- Contact a dealership or glass repair facility to assess the damage and determine what action is needed, as Transport Canada advises.
- Avoid adding scratches while loading or unloading a roof rack; Transport Canada warns that a scratch can develop into a crack.
- Do not treat window film as a default fix. Transport Canada warns that film can cause large pieces of broken glass to fall inside the vehicle or fly off and strike other road users.
If the roof has shattered
- Prioritize safe control of the vehicle and avoid continuing to drive if broken glass, visibility, or the roof opening makes it unsafe. Arrange professional assessment or assistance.
- Have a dealership or qualified glass repair facility inspect the vehicle. Any replacement must match the exact vehicle year, make, model, trim, and roof configuration; confirm fitment with the repair professional.
- Check whether a recall or investigation applies to your specific vehicle rather than assuming every model or roof is affected.
If you suspect a defect
In the United States, you can submit a safety complaint to NHTSA. The agency considers complaints alongside other information; there is no fixed complaint count that automatically triggers an investigation. Canadian owners can report suspected defects to Transport Canada. These reporting channels do not by themselves determine the cause of an individual failure.
