Hyundai Reportedly Shelves IONIQ 3 Plans for Australia Amid Small-EV Price Pressure

Hyundai has reportedly shelved its Australian IONIQ 3 plans, with Turkish sourcing cited as the business-case obstacle. Cheaper small EVs add context, but competition is not confirmed as the sole cause.

Hyundai has reportedly shelved plans to bring the IONIQ 3 electric hatchback to Australia. The Driven reported the decision on 2 October 2026, quoting an unnamed Hyundai spokesperson who said sourcing the car from Turkey made the business case too difficult. Lower-priced Chinese-brand small EVs form part of the competitive backdrop, but the available reporting does not establish that competition alone caused the decision.

What happened to the Hyundai IONIQ 3 in Australia?

The Driven reported on 2 October 2026 that Hyundai had put its Australian IONIQ 3 plans aside. The outlet quoted a Hyundai spokesperson: “The business case is just too difficult given we need to source Ioniq 3 from Turkey.” The spokesperson was not named, and the report is not a formal public cancellation announcement from Hyundai Australia. The Driven’s report is the basis for the claim that the local launch has been shelved.

That distinction matters: the report describes a current decision, not a permanent global end to the model or a guarantee that Hyundai could never revisit Australia. No reversal, alternative sourcing plan or future Australian launch has been confirmed.

Why is Hyundai reportedly holding back the IONIQ 3?

The explanation attributed to Hyundai is the difficulty of making the Australian business case work when the car would need to be sourced from Turkey. The reporting does not quantify the cost or identify a specific import, production or pricing constraint, so it would be speculative to assign a more precise cause.

Price competition is relevant context, not a proven sole cause. A Hyundai Australia price for the IONIQ 3 had not been announced, and there is no verified like-for-like comparison showing how Hyundai would have priced or specified it against local rivals.

What is the IONIQ 3?

Hyundai introduced the IONIQ 3 on 20 April 2026 as a fully electric compact hatchback designed around everyday European needs. The company calls its shape an “Aero Hatch,” intended to balance aerodynamic efficiency with interior space, including rear-passenger room and comfort. Those are Hyundai’s descriptions of the model; they do not establish an Australian specification or confirm that the car will be sold here. Hyundai’s introduction of the IONIQ 3 sets out the company’s positioning.

Which lower-priced small EVs would it have faced?

CarExpert identified three small electric hatchbacks in the Australian market: the GAC Aion UT, Leapmotor B05 and MG 4 EV Urban. Its report gave the following drive-away prices at the time of publication. These are dated reported offers, not enduring list prices or current dealer quotes.

Model Drive-away price reported by CarExpert
GAC Aion UT $31,990
Leapmotor B05 $35,990
MG 4 EV Urban $29,990

CarExpert did not report an Australian IONIQ 3 price, so the figures do not show a direct price gap or prove what Hyundai would have charged. They do illustrate the lower-priced competition the model would have entered. The report does not provide a full same-date comparison of specifications, range, charging, interior usability or warranty coverage. CarExpert’s coverage provides the reported competitor context.

Does this mean Hyundai is abandoning Australian EVs?

No such conclusion follows from the IONIQ 3 report. Hyundai has separately announced the ELEXIO for Australia, saying it was due to arrive locally in early 2026 and that further details would come closer to launch. That announcement is about a different vehicle and does not confirm whether the IONIQ 3 decision could change. Hyundai’s ELEXIO announcement describes that separate local plan.
