If you mean a temporary message on car glass, use a water-removable window marker such as Markal Paint-Riter Window Marker. If you mean making the car’s painted body tacky or sticky, the available product guidance does not establish a cheap, harmless liquid for that purpose—even for a couple of hours. Don’t improvise with household liquids; choose a product whose instructions explicitly cover the surface and intended use.
First decide what you want the liquid to do
Writing a temporary message, applying a protective film, and making a surface sticky are different jobs. A product that is suitable for glass may not be suitable for paint, plastic trim, rubber, or a repainted panel. “Car safe” is not a universal guarantee across those materials or finishes.
For a temporary message on glass
Markal describes its Paint-Riter Window Marker as a liquid marker for temporary marks on glass and other nonporous surfaces, including automobiles. The manufacturer says marks can be removed with water and a cloth or by washing the car. See Markal’s product guidance for its surface directions.
Markal advises testing on rubber for removability. Its guidance does not establish that the marker is suitable for painted body panels, so keep it to the surfaces the manufacturer lists rather than treating it as a paint-safe liquid.

For temporary protection on painted bodywork
Nasiol describes TempoRoad as a water-based temporary protective film for vehicle bodywork and other listed exterior surfaces, removable with water pressure. It is a protective coating, not a liquid intended to make a car sticky. The manufacturer specifically excludes windows and windshields. Check Nasiol’s TempoRoad directions before considering it.

Why not use a random household liquid?
The reviewed product guidance does not establish that an arbitrary sticky household liquid will be harmless on every automotive finish for a couple of hours. A short exposure is not a guarantee: compatibility depends on the specific liquid and the surface. Follow the product label for the exact material, application, and removal method, and avoid applying an unverified substance to paint.
For context, 3M’s December 2024 vehicle-graphics bulletin specifies cleaning before graphics application with 1 ounce (30 ml) of liquid dishwashing detergent per gallon (3.8 l) of lukewarm water, followed by a water rinse. It cautions against soaps or preparations containing waxes, oils, or lotions. That is cleaning guidance for graphics application—not a recommendation to make a car sticky or proof that detergent is safe for every use. Read 3M’s bulletin.
