Your car’s manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor measures pressure in the intake manifold and sends that reading to the engine computer. The computer uses it with other sensor data to help calculate engine air mass and control fuel delivery and ignition timing. A faulty MAP sensor can contribute to drivability problems, but symptoms and trouble codes alone cannot confirm it is the cause.
What a MAP sensor does
The MAP sensor converts intake-manifold pressure into an electrical signal that the engine control module (ECM) or engine control unit (ECU) can interpret. The computer combines that reading with information such as engine speed and intake-air temperature to estimate the air entering the engine and make fueling and ignition decisions. Delphi’s MAP sensor guide and Delphi Technologies’ explainer describe this role.
MAP means manifold absolute pressure. With the engine off, manifold pressure is close to the surrounding atmospheric pressure. Once the engine runs, pressure changes as operating conditions and load change. Many naturally aspirated engines have more manifold vacuum at idle and less as the throttle opens. A turbocharged engine can also produce pressure above atmospheric pressure, or boost, so MAP is not simply a measure of vacuum.
Engine designs vary: a vehicle may use a MAP sensor, a mass airflow (MAF) sensor, or both. Sensor location and how the computer uses its reading depend on the specific engine.

Signs a MAP sensor may be failing
A bad sensor is one possible cause of engine-management problems, not the only one. Potential signs include:
- Rough idle, stalling, surging, or hesitation
- Slow acceleration, weak power, or misfires
- Poor fuel economy or rich- or lean-running behavior
- A check-engine light or an emissions test failure
- Fuel odor with a rich-running condition; overheating or intake backfire may be reported with a lean condition
These symptoms overlap with faults elsewhere in the engine and engine-management system. Treat them as reasons to investigate rather than proof that the MAP sensor has failed. Delphi’s guide and AA1Car’s MAP sensor article describe overlapping symptoms and possible causes.

What MAP-related trouble codes mean
Diagnostic trouble codes can point toward a circuit or performance problem, but they do not identify the failed component by themselves. Common MAP-related codes include:
| Code | General indication |
|---|---|
| P0105 | MAP circuit fault |
| P0106 | MAP range or performance issue |
| P0107 | MAP circuit low input |
| P0108 | MAP circuit high input |
| P0109 | MAP circuit intermittent input |
| P0068 and P0069 | Correlation codes listed by Delphi |
| P1106 and P1107 | Additional codes listed by Delphi |
A code may result from damaged wiring, a poor connector, a blocked or leaking vacuum hose on designs that use one, a vacuum leak, another sensor, or a separate engine fault. Confirm the exact code description and diagnostic procedure for the vehicle rather than replacing a sensor based on the code alone.

How to check a suspected MAP sensor
Use the service information for the exact vehicle, engine, and sensor. Generic voltage values are not universal pass-or-fail specifications.
- Inspect the electrical connection. Check the connector, harness, pins, ground, and reference supply for looseness, corrosion, cracks, melting, or other visible damage.
- Check any vacuum hose. If the design uses a separate hose, look for blockage, kinks, leaks, loose connections, or contamination.
- Review scan-tool data. Compare key-on, engine-off MAP data with the expected barometric pressure for the conditions, then watch whether the reading responds plausibly as engine load changes. Consider related sensor readings and calculated load instead of judging one value in isolation.
- Test sensor response only by the specified method. A hand vacuum pump can help assess response on designs that support that test. For an analog sensor, voltage should change as applied vacuum changes. Digital frequency-output sensors require appropriate frequency-capable equipment. AA1Car warns that an ordinary voltmeter can damage a specific Ford BP/MAP sensor type, so use the vehicle-specific procedure and equipment.
For more detail on test approaches and sensor types, see AA1Car’s technical article and Delphi’s guide.

When replacement makes sense
Replace the MAP sensor only when diagnosis supports that repair. The replacement must match the vehicle’s exact application: calibration differences across engines and model years can affect engine management. Repair a damaged hose or wiring fault as appropriate rather than assuming a new sensor will correct it. Follow the manufacturer’s removal and installation procedure; some vehicles may also require a scan tool to clear a stored warning after the repair. Delphi’s MAP sensor product information underscores that the part is application-specific.
