A used Saturn Sky is worth considering only after you have confirmed which exact car it is, what recall and repair history it carries, and whether its convertible top and airbag restraint system are in sound condition. Those three checks matter more than any general reputation for the model. The sources behind this article do not establish a current price range, a reliable ranking of model years, or a verdict on whether the Red Line trim justifies its cost.
Confirm exactly which car you are looking at
Before comparing listings, pin down five details: the VIN, model year, trim, engine and transmission, and build date. These decide which recall campaigns, technical bulletins and service information apply to the car in front of you.
- VIN. Ask the seller for it before you travel. Every recall and repair check below depends on it.
- Model year. The records discussed here cover 2007 through 2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. Confirm the year from the title or registration and from the vehicle itself.
- Trim. Confirm whether the car is a base Sky or a Red Line from the seller’s paperwork and the vehicle’s own equipment, not from the listing headline alone.
- Engine and transmission. Note both before comparing maintenance needs. A GM/Saturn service specification for the 2009 model year lists both 2.4L and 2.0L four-cylinder engines, so two Skys of the same year can be mechanically different.
- Build date. The build date is typically printed on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb. It matters for one specific top-related bulletin, covered below.
Check recalls by VIN, then verify the paperwork
- Open NHTSA’s VIN-based recall lookup and enter the car’s 17-character VIN.
- Record any open recall. An unrepaired recall should be scheduled for free repair at a dealer before or soon after purchase, and the seller should be asked to address it.
- For every campaign the seller says was completed, request a dated invoice or repair order that shows the work.
- Compare the repair documents with the maintenance history, and confirm the work with a qualified service facility if the paperwork is incomplete.
The lookup has two limits that matter for an older Sky. It does not display recalls that have already been repaired, so a clean result does not prove the car was serviced. It also may omit recalls more than 15 years old. Any campaign issued before late 2011 is now more than 15 years old, so for a 2007–2010 Sky a clean lookup tells you less than it appears to. Repair documents carry more weight than the lookup result.
The 2016 NHTSA passenger sensing system petition
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) recorded a 2016 investigation resume covering the 2007–2010 Saturn Sky and the 2006–2010 Pontiac Solstice. It concerns an allegation about the passenger sensing system’s sensor mat. The document describes a petition and an evaluation. It does not conclude that every Sky has a defective sensor mat, and it does not give a failure rate.

Two figures in the record are often misread:
- 91,205 is the population recorded for the products listed in the investigation. It is not a count of affected vehicles.
- 933 complaints were identified by the petitioner in an attachment and span several GM models. They are not a Sky-only complaint count, and ODI said it would evaluate them further.
NHTSA’s investigations and recalls resources page answers the question “How many complaints does it take to open an investigation?” with the words “There is no set number.” That statement describes how complaint review works. It says nothing about how often Skys fail.
For the car itself, watch the airbag warning light when you turn the ignition on. It should illuminate briefly and then go out. If it stays on, flashes, or the seller cannot explain a previous warning, ask for a scan of the restraint system. Documentation of any repair to the passenger sensing system is worth requesting even when the light behaves normally.
Inspect the convertible top
Plan B tops on pre-March 2007 cars
A GM bulletin dated June 18, 2009 concerns top wear on certain cars built before March 2007 that have plan B tops. That bulletin applies to that build window and top configuration. Do not assume it covers every Sky. Use the build date from the door-jamb label to decide whether the bulletin is relevant, and ask the seller whether the top has been replaced or repaired.
General top condition
A 2007 Sky bulletin index lists top concerns that include fit, folding, leaks, noise and wear. Those are the areas to test on any car, regardless of build date. These checks are an inspection checklist drawn from the bulletin subjects, not a claim that any particular car has those faults.

| Area | What to check | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Full cycle | Open and close the top through its complete procedure, with the car stationary and the key in the correct position. | Hesitation, uneven movement, binding, or a procedure that does not finish cleanly. |
| Fabric and seams | Look at the fabric, seams and folds in good light, with the top both up and down. | Wear at folds, stretched or puckered fabric, or seam separation. |
| Latches and weatherstrips | Check that the top latches fully and that the weatherstrips seal evenly. | Gaps, flattened or torn seals, or a latch that needs force. |
| Window fit | Confirm that the side windows meet the top properly when it is closed. | Window contact with the top, rubbing sounds, or visible misalignment. |
| Water evidence | Inspect the cabin carpet, floor and trunk, including under the trunk liner, for dampness or staining. | Damp carpet, water marks, musty odour, or rust near seams. |
Identify the engine before comparing service needs
The 2009 GM/Saturn service specification lists both 2.4L and 2.0L four-cylinder engines. The sources behind this article do not establish which model years or trims used which engine. Confirm the engine from the car, then use the owner’s manual for the same model year and the service information for that engine when you estimate upkeep. Do not assume that a service item listed for one engine applies to the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this evidence does not settle
- Price. No current, independently verified asking-price range for the Sky was established. Compare the listing with current local listings for cars with the same year, trim, engine and documented history.
- Reliability by year. No systematic model-year reliability ranking or repair-cost estimate was established. Avoid any claim that a particular year is trouble-free.
- Red Line value. The Red Line is a trim, but the sources do not compare its equipment or performance with the base car. Whether it is worth the premium depends on the exact car’s price, condition and paperwork.
Use this checklist to decide whether a particular listing deserves a pre-purchase inspection. The car should have a VIN that returns no unrepaired recalls, documentation for every completed campaign, a top that cycles and seals cleanly, no water evidence, and a restraint system without warning-light faults. If any of those are missing, ask for the documents before you make an offer.
