A BMW i8 GT3 would most plausibly look like a low, wide, race-prepared version of the plug-in hybrid sports car, with functional aerodynamics, racing cooling, track-specific suspension and brakes, and a stripped, safety-equipped cockpit. But this is a design exercise, not a real BMW race car: the official sources cited here document the production i8 and BMW’s M4 GT3, not an i8 GT3 program, homologated car or specification.
What the production BMW i8 brought to the idea
BMW described the i8 Coupe and Roadster as plug-in hybrid sports cars. Its US legacy-model page identifies a synchronous electric motor at the front and a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo engine over the rear axle; BMW lists the road car’s front motor at 141 hp. Those are production-car details, not figures for a hypothetical racer. BMW also says the i8 Coupe and Roadster are no longer in production. BMW USA’s i8 legacy-model page
The i8’s construction would give a design concept a distinctive starting point. BMW’s 2014 production material describes a CFRP Life module, thermoplastic outer skin and a Drive module incorporating chassis structure, electric motor and high-voltage battery. That architecture helps explain why an i8-based race car would pose unusual packaging and weight-management questions; it does not show that converting the road car for competition would be simple or economical. BMW’s 2014 production material
For historical context, BMW’s 2013 press kit describes the i8 as a plug-in hybrid and sets out the period’s design and driving concept. Its early concept and concept Spyder figures should not be mistaken for production-car specifications. BMW’s 2013 i8 press kit

What would change for GT3 racing?
A GT3 car is not just a road car with a wing. BMW’s M4 GT3 illustrates the extent of the race-specific transformation: BMW lists a P58 inline-six, a six-speed sequential Xtrac transmission, carbon-fiber bodywork, adjustable front splitter and rear wing, racing cockpit controls, an FIA-compliant roll cage, fire suppression and a safety fuel cell. BMW describes the M4 GT3 as designed exclusively for racetrack use. These are reference features from the M4, not a specification for an i8-based car. BMW M4 GT3
Visually, an i8 GT3 concept could retain the road car’s recognizable cabin shape and sculpted sides while gaining wider fenders, a lower stance, a front splitter, a large adjustable rear wing and a diffuser. Wheel-arch vents and carefully managed airflow beneath the floor would fit the idea of a track-focused body. These are plausible design choices, not confirmed i8 GT3 features.

Inside, the road-car cabin would give way to a single-seat competition layout: a racing seat and harness, roll cage, fire system and controls arranged for a driver wearing a helmet and gloves. Data and driver controls would take precedence over road-car comfort. This visualization draws on the needs suggested by BMW’s M4 GT3 reference; no official i8 GT3 cockpit has been documented.
The hybrid powertrain is the biggest open question
The production i8’s front electric motor and rear turbocharged engine make a hybrid race-car concept easy to imagine, but that does not mean the road-car system could transfer unchanged. BMW’s road-car figures establish what the production i8 was, not what a competition version could use. A purpose-built race powertrain and control package might differ substantially from the road setup; its output, battery, mass and performance cannot be responsibly specified from the available official material.

Regulation is another reason not to treat the concept as an obvious conversion. The FIA regulations index lists a 2026 Appendix J Article 257A for Grand Touring Cars (Group GT3), approved by the World Motor Sport Council on 23 June 2026, and a separate Article 257E for Electric Grand Touring Cars, published 9 January 2026. Those listings establish separate document tracks, not whether a particular i8-based hybrid would qualify, be competitive or be commercially worthwhile. Eligibility would require detailed rule review, manufacturer development and formal homologation; the index alone does not establish any of those for an i8. FIA regulations index

The M4 GT3 offers a useful scale reference, but its figures and equipment cannot be carried over to an imagined i8 racer. BMW states a maximum of 590 hp for the M4 GT3; that is the M4’s manufacturer-listed figure, not a target or estimate for an i8 GT3. The comparison is more meaningful in broad engineering terms than in invented performance numbers.
