Grand Prix is French for “great prize” or “big prize.” In English, it usually means an important international motor race; in Formula 1, it is the official term for the race itself, not the whole event weekend.
What does “Grand Prix” mean?
The words translate literally from French as “great prize” or “big prize.” In modern English, Grand Prix names an important racing event rather than a prize being awarded. Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries defines it as one of a series of important international races for cars or motorcycles: Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries’ definition and word origin.
So a Grand Prix is not necessarily a Formula 1 race. The term is also used for other kinds of motorsport, including motorcycle racing.

What happens during an F1 Grand Prix weekend?
A typical Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend runs from Friday to Sunday. It includes practice and qualifying before the Grand Prix takes place on the final day. The exact schedule is not universal: Sprint weekends use a different format, as Formula 1 notes in its glossary.

When did Grand Prix racing begin?
Honda’s Formula 1 explainer identifies the first French Grand Prix as having been held in 1906, a milestone in Grand Prix racing history: Honda’s account of how a Formula 1 event works. That date is distinct from the start of the Formula 1 World Championship. Formula 1 says the championship has been contested annually since 1950; before it began, each Grand Prix was a standalone event: Formula 1’s beginner’s guide to the Drivers’ Championship.
