The citywide default speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted, and traffic advisories, street closures, parking rules, and toll details can affect a trip. Check official city and MTA information shortly before you leave.
Is it hard to drive in NYC?
It can be demanding, especially if you are unfamiliar with the street grid, curb regulations, or traffic disruptions. The difficulty depends on your destination and timing: a route into Manhattan may cross the congestion-pricing zone, while construction or a street event can change the best route or add delays.
Check the route close to departure
NYC DOT publishes weekly traffic advisories for construction and street events, as well as a street-closure map. Review both before setting out, and check again if your plans change. The department also identifies holiday-season gridlock alert days as among the year’s busiest traffic days; allow flexibility rather than assuming a normal travel time. NYC DOT: Motorists & Parking
Follow the posted speed limit
NYC DOT states: “NYC’s speed limit is 25 MPH, unless otherwise posted.” Treat 25 mph as the citywide default, not permission to exceed a lower posted limit; follow the sign for the street you are on. NYC DOT: Motorists & Parking

Do I have to pay congestion pricing to drive into Manhattan?
The Central Business District Tolling Program launched on January 5, 2025. NYC DOT says vehicles that enter or remain in Manhattan south of 60th Street are tolled by the MTA. Whether a specific trip is chargeable, and the amount or applicable vehicle rules, depends on current MTA terms; this city guidance does not establish today’s toll amount, cap, discounts, exemptions, or collection method.
Before driving, check the MTA’s current tolling information linked from NYC DOT’s motorists page. Include the current toll and parking cost in your decision, rather than relying on an old rate or a route planner that may not reflect current toll rules.

How does parking work in New York City?
At the curb, read every posted sign for the exact block and side of the street. The sign controls; do not assume a space is available just because another car is parked there. NYC DOT distinguishes three common restrictions:
| Sign | Passenger pickup or drop-off | Package loading | Waiting |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Stopping | Not allowed | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| No Standing | Allowed | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| No Parking | Allowed | Allowed at the curb | Not allowed |
These distinctions are not interchangeable: a sign that permits a brief pickup does not necessarily permit loading or waiting. Passenger-vehicle double-parking is illegal at all times, including on street-cleaning days, and parking within 15 feet of either side of a fire hydrant is illegal. Consider a municipal garage or lot
NYC DOT operates municipal garages and lots and provides links to facility details and street-parking-rate information. Rates and available spaces vary, so verify the current price and availability before relying on a facility. A garage can be a practical alternative when curb restrictions or street-cleaning schedules make parking inconvenient. NYC DOT: Motorists & Parking
What is alternate-side parking?
Alternate-side parking (ASP) is the curb-clearing schedule that allows the city to clean streets. When ASP is in effect, drivers must move their vehicles as required by the posted schedule, even if the restriction applies only during a limited window. Check the signs on your block and the city’s current suspension notices before leaving a vehicle there. NYC DOT: Alternate Side Parking Suspensions
Check suspensions on the day you park
ASP may be suspended for a calendar holiday, weather, or an emergency. The 2026 calendar distinguishes major legal holidays, when certain restrictions that are not in effect seven days a week and meters are suspended, from other listed holidays when only street-cleaning rules are suspended. Restrictions that apply seven days a week remain in effect. Weather and emergency suspensions may be announced separately and at short notice.
Check NYC 311 or Notify NYC for current notices. An ASP suspension does not cancel unrelated parking rules: continue to obey other restrictions shown on the sign, and never double-park a passenger vehicle while waiting for street cleaning to resume. What to check before driving
- Route and timing: Review NYC DOT’s weekly traffic advisories and street-closure map shortly before departure.
- Destination: Determine whether your route enters or remains in Manhattan south of 60th Street, then verify current toll rules with the MTA.
- Parking: Read the curb signs for the precise block and check whether ASP is active or suspended.
- Cost: Compare the current toll and parking costs, including a municipal garage if curb parking looks uncertain.
For regulations beyond these city-specific basics, consult the official rules rather than assuming that general driving guidance covers licensing, insurance, child restraints, or bridge and tunnel charges.
