Spit On, Sworn At, and Undeterred: What It’s Like to Own a Cybertruck

Owning a Cybertruck can mean enjoying its unusual design, quick acceleration, cabin space or utility while also attracting attention you did not ask for. In a feature published October 16, 2025, WIRED spoke with seven Tesla Cybertruck owners who described reactions ranging from cheers and children’s curiosity to insults and rude gestures. Their stories show how visibility can be both an asset and a burden—but they are individual accounts, not a measure of what Cybertruck owners generally experience.

What driving a Cybertruck feels like in public

Owners interviewed by WIRED describe a vehicle that rarely blends into traffic. That visibility brings a range of responses, not one predictable public reaction.

Curiosity and enthusiasm

One couple said children reacted enthusiastically and that people sometimes cheered. Andrew Castillo recounted pulling over after a car followed him, only to learn that a child wanted to see the Cybertruck. He said the child spent about two hours with his family and the truck. It is a striking encounter, but one owner’s story cannot establish how common that kind of curiosity is.

Insults and uneasy encounters

Other owners described a driver yelling that their trucks were ugly, a hostile note, and rude gestures. The interviews do not establish how often these incidents happen or whether they reflect a broader trend. They do show why being noticed can feel uncomfortable, even to someone who enjoys the vehicle itself.

When visibility helps—and when it complicates ownership

For Jose Reynoso, attention could serve a business purpose. He said he used a logo-wrapped Cybertruck for marketing and events. But he worried clients might not want a vehicle associated with controversy at a home-renovation job, so he did not use it as his daily driver. The same feature that can make the truck a memorable business presence can also make it a concern in a client-facing setting.

WIRED also spoke with wrapper Alex Ferguson, who said, “I believe I’ve wrapped the most in the country. I’ve done over 400.” That is Ferguson’s own count, not an independently verified national ranking. His account illustrates the customization and business visibility associated with the vehicle, rather than establishing how many Cybertrucks are wrapped overall.

Why owners like the truck—and what they find difficult

The owners’ positive comments are personal impressions, not independent vehicle test results. Interviewees praised acceleration, a quiet and smooth ride, cabin space for dogs, towing, off-road use and customization.

They also named practical adjustments. Frank Brabec said he needed about three days to get used to the steer-by-wire steering. Castillo said the long front made it difficult for him to see from the windshield. These accounts point to the possibility that a distinctive design can involve a learning curve or visibility trade-off; they do not establish how every driver will find the controls or sightlines.

Does the Cybertruck make ownership political?

The interviewees did not agree on what the truck represents. Andrew Castillo said it had no political affiliations for him. Reynoso said he and his family felt caught up in public hostility around Elon Musk and Tesla, describing their experience this way: “We were the targets.” That was Reynoso’s account of his family’s experience during a period of controversy, not a finding about Cybertruck owners as a group.

Russ Taylor called the truck “just a vehicle.” WIRED’s editor note also gives relevant context: Taylor was involved in a January 6 case and later received a pardon. His description is his own framing; it should not be read as a neutral consensus about the vehicle’s public meaning.

What these owner stories can—and cannot—tell you

The useful takeaway is not that every Cybertruck owner will be harassed, celebrated or drawn into political debate. WIRED’s October 2025 feature offers seven selected owners’ perspectives. It captures the tension between private enjoyment and conspicuous public attention, but it is not a representative survey, an independent vehicle test or a measurement of how common any reaction is. It also offers a snapshot from its publication date, not evidence of public attitudes or community membership in 2026.
