Reviewers describe the 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel as an off-road-oriented version of a mainstream full-size pickup that keeps ordinary truck utility. The praise centers on that combination, and the most consistent complaint is fuel consumption. Towing and payload figures in published coverage belong to specific tested trucks, so treat them as examples of what a Rebel can do, not guarantees for every 2022 Rebel.
What the 2022 Rebel is
Stellantis North America announced the 2022 Ram 1500 lineup on 15 November 2021. Two details from that announcement matter for Rebel buyers. The GT Rebel Crew Cab was added as a new option, and Trailer Hitch Light was included in the Trailer Tow Group. These are model-year announcement details. They show what Ram offered for 2022, but they do not confirm that a particular used truck was built with either one.
Reviewers position the Rebel as the off-road-focused member of the full-size range rather than a specialist that gives up everyday usefulness. That positioning is the starting point for every judgment below.

Off-road character without giving up truck utility
The most common praise is that the Rebel delivers an off-road-capable setup while remaining a full-size pickup. Reviewers treat that balance as the trim’s main selling point. The appeal is strongest for buyers who want a truck that looks and equips for rough ground but still hauls, tows and commutes like a standard half-ton.

Substantial capability on at least one tested truck
Cars.com, in its 2022 review of a Rebel G/T test truck, reported a 1,324-pound payload capacity and an 11,210-pound towing capacity. Those figures describe that one vehicle as tested. Reviewers use them to show that at least some equipped Rebels have real working capacity, not that every Rebel reaches the same numbers.
More configuration choice for 2022
The addition of the GT Rebel Crew Cab gave buyers another factory configuration to consider in the model year. For a shopper, that means the Rebel name covers more than one cab and equipment arrangement, so the exact build matters more than the badge.

What reviewers criticize
Fuel economy
Fuel consumption is the recurring drawback. The Drive reported roughly 18 mpg combined in its 2022 review of a Rebel G/T configuration. That is a figure for the reviewed truck, not a rating for all 2022 Rebels. MotorTrend also lists fuel economy among the truck’s drawbacks when compared with competitors; the coverage available does not date that comparison precisely, so read it as a general judgment rather than a head-to-head test result.
Towing and payload depend on equipment
Capability is the second area where careless comparisons go wrong. Published towing and payload numbers depend on engine, axle ratio, cab and bed, and installed tow equipment. Off-road-focused configurations should not be assumed to match a maximum rating advertised for a different setup. The Cars.com figures above illustrate the point: they are tied to one truck, and a different Rebel may carry a different label.

Reliability and repair costs are not established
The sources reviewed do not establish long-term reliability or repair costs for this trim and model-year combination. Any claim of a universal reliability outcome for the 2022 Rebel goes beyond the available evidence. For a used purchase, the truck’s service history and a pre-purchase inspection will tell you more than trim-level generalizations.

Tires: verify before you replace
An older Ram brochure lists LT285/70R17E Toyo Open Country tires for a Rebel configuration. Because that brochure is not specific to 2022, it cannot confirm what your truck wears. Before buying replacement all-terrain tires, check the truck itself:
- Open the driver’s door and read the tire placard on the door jamb. Note the factory tire size, load range and recommended inflation pressures.
- Check the window sticker or build sheet for the wheel and tire package the truck left the factory with.
- Compare the placard against the LT285/70R17E size only if the truck’s wheels are 17-inch and the placard matches.
- When shopping for replacement all-terrain tires, match the load range and overall diameter to the placard so the speedometer, ride and load rating stay close to factory specification. Ask the tire shop to confirm fitment against the truck’s specification before ordering.

- Axle ratio: the rear axle ratio, which affects towing and fuel economy.
- Tow equipment: whether Trailer Hitch Light and the Trailer Tow Group are present.
- Payload label: the certification label on the driver’s door jamb, which lists the payload for that truck.
- Installed packages: any off-road or convenience packages that change weight, tires or the payload figure.
- Tire placard: the size and load rating described above.
