The B32 began as a practical fast service van for Porsche’s motorsport support work, not as a novelty project. Its later prototype paired a 3.2-litre 911 Carrera flat-six with a 915 gearbox and 944 S brakes.
Why did Porsche build the B32?
Porsche needed a support vehicle that could carry equipment and keep pace with the company’s rally and racing activity. In Porsche Netherlands’ account, development chief Helmut Bott wanted Transporter reliability with enough speed for the job, including support for the Paris–Dakar program. The result was a Volkswagen T3 Transporter modified by Porsche: practical van first, unusually quick service vehicle second.
Its familiar T3 body made the mechanical change easy to miss. Porsche added external air grilles to help the air-cooled engine breathe, but otherwise retained the van’s recognizable shape. That contrast—ordinary-looking Transporter, 911-derived powertrain—is the B32’s defining character.
How did the two prototypes differ?
Porsche Netherlands’ 31 May 2022 retrospective describes two prototype configurations. The first tested the concept with a 3.0-litre 911 SC engine; the second received a more powerful 3.2-litre 911 Carrera engine. The published performance figures apply to the second prototype, not to both configurations.

The figures for the Carrera-powered van are manufacturer-reported factory specifications, not independent test results. Porsche’s separate 911 history describes the model’s air-cooled flat-six lineage; the B32 account identifies the added grilles needed for the engine’s cooling airflow.
Did Porsche put a 911 engine in a Volkswagen van?
In the practical sense, yes: Porsche developed a T3 Transporter around 911-derived engines. The first prototype used the 3.0-litre 911 SC engine, and the second used the 3.2-litre 911 Carrera engine. Calling it simply “a 911 engine in a van” captures the headline but misses the purpose: Porsche needed a fast support vehicle, and the project also involved a gearbox, brakes, cooling provisions and a production effort.

Did the B32 reach production?
Porsche Netherlands says customer vehicles began to be built at the end of 1983, after which the project was cancelled. The account says the combination of a high purchase price and fuel consumption made commercial success doubtful. Porsche’s 2022 retrospective reports a German price of 177,000 Deutsche Mark for B32s with official Porsche chassis numbers, compared with a listed 1984 price of 66,950 Deutsche Mark for a 911. These are nominal historical prices reported in 2022, not inflation-adjusted amounts or present-day values.
The production total is not firmly established. Porsche Netherlands says even the Porsche archive could not reconstruct the exact number built. Its semi-official account is nine series vehicles plus two prototypes; that should be treated as an attributed estimate, not a definitive total. The same article notes that one prototype belongs to a Dutch collector.

What makes the B32 unusual?
The B32 combined components and priorities from different kinds of vehicle. The T3 supplied the useful van body, while Porsche’s later prototype used a 911 Carrera flat-six, a 915 gearbox and 944 S brakes. Yet Porsche kept the exterior understated, adding grilles rather than turning the Transporter into an overt sports-car statement.
That combination also explains why the B32 should not be reduced to its top-speed figure. Its original rationale was operational: a service van able to cover ground quickly while supporting Porsche’s motorsport programs. The speed was a means to that end, even if it became the detail that made the van famous.

How can an owner verify a B32’s history?
For a specific vehicle, provenance matters because the reported production count is uncertain. Porsche offers vehicle documentation services, but its Production Specification records original build information and have defined limits: Porsche says they do not include engine or transmission serial numbers, the production number, dealer, prior owners, warranty history, standard equipment or technical information. A production specification can therefore help document a vehicle’s original build, but it cannot by itself establish every detail of a B32’s identity or history.
