Hyundai recall 25V659 covers 135,386 potentially involved 2024–2025 Santa Fe SUVs in the United States. A starter-motor terminal cover may not be fully seated; in certain crashes, the exposed terminal could contact the cooling fan and cause an electrical short, increasing fire risk. Eligibility is VIN-specific, and the remedy is a free inspection and repair at a Hyundai dealer.
Which Santa Fe vehicles are covered?
The campaign is NHTSA recall 25V659, Hyundai campaign 285. It concerns certain U.S.-market 2024–2025 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles with 2.5-liter turbocharged engines, built by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama from December 28, 2023, through July 7, 2025. Model year or engine alone does not confirm whether a particular vehicle is included; check its 17-digit VIN.
Hyundai reported 135,386 potentially involved vehicles in its 2025 filing to NHTSA. That is the size of the population that may be affected, not a count of vehicles confirmed to have the defect. Hyundai estimated that 1% of the potentially involved population had the condition.
What is the fire risk?
The starter assembly’s positive B+ terminal cover may have been installed incompletely, leaving part of the electrical terminal exposed. In certain crashes, deformation in the engine compartment could let the terminal contact the cooling fan assembly. The contact could cause an electrical short and increase the risk of an electrical fire. NHTSA’s acknowledgement describes the risk this way: “An electrical short increases the risk of a fire.”

This is a dealer service remedy, not a request to buy a replacement cover or perform a do-it-yourself repair. NHTSA listed October 4, 2025, as the date VINs became searchable and December 1, 2025, as the expected owner-letter date; those dates are historical, so check the VIN for current status rather than relying on the old mailing schedule. Hyundai customer service is listed at 1-855-371-9460.
How the recall was identified
The issue surfaced during a November 20, 2024, NHTSA New Car Assessment Program frontal barrier crash test of a 2024 Santa Fe. A post-test inspection found smoke in the engine compartment, suggesting thermal damage. Hyundai’s subsequent investigation included April 2025 bench testing that replicated a possible short when the exposed starter terminal contacted the cooling-fan motor housing. A field survey also found vehicles with partial or no terminal coverage. Hyundai reported that correctly installed covers remained in place during durability testing.

On September 25, 2025, Hyundai’s North America Safety Decision Authority decided to recall potentially affected U.S.-market vehicles. In its filing submitted October 2, 2025, Hyundai reported one U.S. NCAP test result with confirmed signs of a thermal event and no U.S. field incidents, crashes, injuries, or fatalities attributable to the condition. That is the filing’s account as of that date, not a lifetime or current total.

Recall 25V659 concerns the starter-motor terminal cover and potential fire risk. It is separate from NHTSA campaign 26V218, which covers certain 2024–2026 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid vehicles for a front seat-belt-anchor condition that can increase injury risk in a crash. A vehicle can have more than one campaign to check, so review the VIN for all open recalls rather than assuming every Santa Fe recall concerns fire.

It is also distinct from NHTSA’s 2022 alert about earlier Santa Fe ABS-module fire recalls. That earlier campaign involved a different component and risk; its parking advice should not be applied to this 2025 starter-terminal campaign without current campaign-specific official guidance.
