The 1966 Mercedes-Benz SLX was a full-scale wooden design study for a mid-engined super sports car, not a production car or a documented running prototype. Mercedes-Benz links it to the development of the C 111, presented three years later. The AMG ONE, by contrast, is a modern production hybrid whose launch story centers on Formula 1 technology. The SLX is best understood as a thematic predecessor in Mercedes-Benz performance thinking—not as a documented direct ancestor of the AMG ONE.
What was the Mercedes-Benz SLX?
Mercedes-Benz stylists Giorgio Battistella and Paul Bracq created the SLX as a 1965 design study. In spring 1966, the concept was realized as a 1:1 wooden model and tested in a wind tunnel, according to Mercedes-Benz Classic’s 2019 press information.
That distinction matters: the sourced account documents a full-scale design model, not a finished car with a working powertrain or road-going performance figures. It is therefore misleading to describe the SLX as a production Mercedes or to assign it an engine specification based on this evidence.
How did the SLX lead toward the C 111?
Mercedes-Benz describes the SLX as an important creative development step for the C 111. The C 111 was presented in 1969, three years after the SLX model was realized. The museum’s 2019 statement says the prototype “illustrated just how important the creative development step was to the C 111, which was presented only three years later.”

This is the documented historical connection: SLX to C 111 through design development. It does not make the SLX a production-car predecessor, nor does it establish a continuous technical lineage extending to every later Mercedes performance model.
What connects the SLX to the AMG ONE?
The resemblance is thematic rather than a documented direct lineage. The SLX explored the idea of a mid-engined super sports car as a 1960s design study. The AMG ONE is a road-going production hybrid whose official launch framing emphasizes Formula 1-derived technology. The official sources connect the SLX with the C 111 and the AMG ONE with Formula 1; they do not state that the SLX directly influenced the AMG ONE.

Mercedes-AMG’s 2022 production-launch release described the AMG ONE as combining a combustion engine with four electric motors, for a manufacturer-rated system output of 782 kW (1,063 PS) and a top speed limited to 352 km/h. These are Mercedes-AMG’s launch specifications, not independent test results. They should not be confused with specifications for the SLX, for which the cited historical account gives no running powertrain data.

Why the “long lost relative” description needs qualification
Calling the SLX the AMG ONE’s “long lost relative” works as a headline metaphor for two striking Mercedes-Benz performance concepts separated by decades. Read literally—as a claim that the AMG ONE descends technically or corporately from the SLX—it goes beyond what the official sources establish. The defensible story is narrower and more interesting: the SLX was an early design exploration that helped point toward the C 111, while the AMG ONE represents a later, distinct Formula 1 technology program.
