The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport can make sense as a used two-row SUV, particularly for buyers who value its strong results in several IIHS crash tests. But its safety award depended on specific equipment, and some vehicles are covered by recalls or engine-related campaigns that must be checked by VIN. Its condition, service history and documented campaign work matter more than a blanket claim that it remains “among the best.”
What is the 2018 Santa Fe Sport?
The 2018 Santa Fe Sport is the two-row model. Hyundai sold a separate, longer three-row Santa Fe alongside it. For 2019, Hyundai renamed and redesigned the two-row vehicle as the Santa Fe; that redesigned model is not the 2018 Santa Fe Sport reviewed here. IIHS’s 2018 Santa Fe Sport page applies to the 2018 model, not the redesigned 2019 vehicle.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport a good used SUV?
It is a candidate worth considering, not an automatic recommendation. IIHS rated the vehicle Good in several major crashworthiness tests, but the Top Safety Pick+ designation was conditional on optional front crash prevention, specific headlights and a build date after June 2017. A used example’s safety equipment and build date therefore matter, as do its recall and campaign status, service records, mileage and mechanical condition.
The available evidence does not establish a current reliability ranking or a like-for-like comparison with competing compact SUVs. Judge a specific vehicle on its documentation and inspection rather than assuming all 2018 Santa Fe Sports have the same equipment or history.

How safe is the 2018 Santa Fe Sport?
IIHS assigned the 2018 Santa Fe Sport the designation “Top Safety Pick +” only when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights, and only for vehicles built after June 2017. IIHS ratings for the model include:
- Good: driver-side small-overlap front, original moderate-overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats.
- Acceptable: passenger-side small-overlap front and LATCH ease of use.
- Superior: optional vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention.
- Headlights: ratings vary by trim and equipment.
These are IIHS ratings, not a guarantee that a particular used vehicle has the equipment required for the award. Check the vehicle’s build date and installed safety features, and consult the IIHS model page for test applicability and headlight details.
What recalls and campaigns should shoppers check?
Do not assume a vehicle is affected—or cleared—based on its model year alone. Use its VIN to check open recalls, campaign applicability and completed repairs. Hyundai’s notices describe several distinct actions with different scopes.

Steering-wheel hub recall: NHTSA 18V-118
Hyundai’s notice says certain 2018 Santa Fe Sport vehicles may have a steering-wheel hub assembly with insufficient breakage strength, creating a risk that the steering wheel could separate from the steering column while driving. The listed manufacturing windows are July 23 through October 23, 2017, at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, and August 10 through October 24, 2017, at Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia. Hyundai says the repair is free. These dates identify the notice’s manufacturing scope; check the VIN and repair status rather than inferring eligibility from dates alone. See Hyundai/NHTSA’s 18V-118 notice.
Hyundai Campaign 237 scope inquiry
Hyundai’s Campaign 237 FAQ says certain 2018 Santa Fe Sport vehicles were omitted from the scope of Recall 218 (NHTSA 22V-056). The manufacturer describes U.S.-sale vehicles without Smart Cruise Control produced at Kia Georgia from May 1, 2017 through May 10, 2018. That description does not establish that every vehicle in the range is affected; check the VIN and status through Hyundai’s Campaign 237 FAQ.
Engine-monitoring Campaign 953
Hyundai says Campaign 953 covers certain 2013–2018 Santa Fe Sport vehicles equipped with a 2.4L GDI or 2.0L Turbo GDI engine. The free dealer software update installs a knock-sensor detection system intended to detect potential early bearing wear. If the system activates and bearing wear is identified, Hyundai says the dealer inspects the engine and replaces it if necessary. The campaign is not evidence that every 2018 vehicle has suffered or will suffer engine failure. Confirm applicability and completion by VIN using Hyundai’s Campaign 953 FAQ.

Engine warranty extension
Hyundai describes extended engine coverage for certain Santa Fe Sport vehicles, including eligible 2013–2018 models with the specified 2.4L GDI and 2.0L Turbo GDI engines. The FAQ states a limit of 10 years from original delivery or first use, or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first; it also says the extension transfers to subsequent owners. Coverage applies only to eligible vehicles and qualifying repairs, so a 2018 vehicle’s remaining coverage depends on its first-use date, mileage and VIN-specific eligibility. Hyundai explicitly says this warranty extension is not a recall. Verify the details with Hyundai’s engine extended warranty FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What service records should a buyer look for?
Look for dated maintenance records, especially evidence of regular engine oil and filter service. Hyundai’s 2018 Santa Fe Quick Reference Guide lists these intervals:
Recommended Free Tools
| Usage condition | Oil and filter service interval | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Normal usage | Every 7,500 miles or 12 months | Hyundai 2018 Santa Fe Quick Reference Guide |
| Severe usage | Every 3,750 miles or 6 months | Hyundai 2018 Santa Fe Quick Reference Guide |
The guide also calls for regular oil checks and directs owners to the full manual for details. Confirm the correct schedule and oil specification in the 2018 Santa Fe Sport Owner’s Manual for the specific engine and use conditions. An oil-change receipt or product listing alone does not establish that a vehicle’s maintenance history is complete.
What to verify before buying one
- Identify the exact vehicle. Confirm it is the two-row 2018 Santa Fe Sport, not the distinct three-row Santa Fe or the redesigned 2019 two-row Santa Fe.
- Check safety equipment. Confirm build date, front crash prevention and headlight configuration before treating the IIHS award as applicable to that vehicle.
- Run the VIN through Hyundai’s recall and campaign checks. Ask for documentation showing whether applicable steering-wheel, Campaign 237 and Campaign 953 work was completed.
- Confirm engine coverage directly with Hyundai. Ask whether the VIN qualifies for the engine warranty extension and whether any coverage remains.
- Review service history and arrange an inspection. Compare maintenance records with the appropriate schedule, then have a qualified mechanic assess the vehicle’s condition before purchase.
If comparing it with another used SUV, compare equivalent engines and trims, front-wheel or all-wheel drive, installed safety equipment, service and campaign records, mileage, remaining VIN-specific coverage and inspected condition. The evidence cited here does not establish a complete trim-by-trim specification comparison.
