For most ordinary field work, an R-1 agricultural tire is the starting point. Choose by the ground and work: R-1W for moist or sticky soil, R-2 for very wet or flooded fields, R-3 for turf or minimal disturbance, and R-4 for industrial or hard-surface use. Then confirm the tire fits the machine, axle position, load, speed and operating conditions.
How the tread types differ
R-codes describe tread designs and their intended applications; they are not a ranking from worst to best. The right choice depends on the surface and the job.
| Tread type | Best-supported use | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| R-1 | General field work and ordinary or drier soil | The baseline agricultural traction tread. Bridgestone / Firestone and the GRI 2024 US catalog describe its general field use. |
| R-1W | Moist or sticky soil | Bridgestone / Firestone says R-1W tread is at least 20% deeper than the same-sized R-1 tire. That is a tread-depth comparison, not a guarantee of better results for every machine or condition. Source. |
| R-2 | Very wet or flooded fields, including rice and cane applications | Bridgestone / Firestone describes R-2 tread as twice as deep as R-1. Its specialty tread is not automatically the right choice for ordinary field work. Source; GRI catalog. |
| R-3 | Turf and minimal-disturbance applications | Its shallow tread suits applications where limiting surface disturbance matters, rather than demanding field traction. GRI catalog. |
| R-4 | Industrial, loader or hard-surface work | It is intended for hard-surface and industrial applications, not as a universal choice for farm fields. GRI catalog. |
| R1/R4 hybrid | Mixed compact-tractor work across surfaces | Bobcat describes hybrid industrial/agricultural tires as an option for compact tractors with varied tasks. Check machine fitment before choosing one. Bobcat guidance. |
Choose for the ground and the work
Ordinary field conditions
Start with R-1 for general field work in ordinary or drier soil. It is the baseline agricultural tread, not a promise that one tire will suit every crop, machine or soil condition.
Moist or sticky soil
Consider R-1W when conditions call for a deeper-lug option. Bridgestone / Firestone specifies at least 20% greater tread depth than a same-sized R-1. The figure describes tread depth only; it does not establish a universal advantage in traction, soil compaction or productivity. Read its R-1 and R-1W explanation.
Very wet or flooded fields
R-2 is the specialized choice among these categories for very wet or flooded ground. The GRI catalog associates it with rice and cane applications, while Bridgestone / Firestone says its tread is twice as deep as R-1. Those classifications do not make R-2 the default for less wet conditions. Bridgestone / Firestone; GRI catalog.
#1 Best Overall
- Carlisle branded tires are now Carlstar, and offer the same excellent performance, durability, and value that they have for the past 100 years
- Designed for use on tractors in farm and agricultural applications
- Optimal lug and void ratio increases traction on- and off-road by promoting self-cleaning
- Directional tread pattern enhances traction
- Reinforced internal structure maintains the ideal tire shape under load and driving pressure to prevent irregular wear
Turf, hard surfaces and mixed duties
For turf or work where minimal surface disturbance is important, look at R-3. For industrial or hard-surface work, R-4 is the more relevant category. A compact tractor moving between different surfaces may have an R1/R4 hybrid option, but its fit still needs to be verified for the machine. GRI catalog; Bobcat compact-tractor guidance.
Verify fit before choosing a tire
A tread code alone is not enough to identify a suitable tire. Michelin frames farm tire selection around equipment type, load, terrain and operating conditions. Michelin’s agricultural tire overview is a useful reminder to check the complete application.
Rank #2
- IMPROVE FIELD TRACTION: Tread pattern delivers dependable grip across wet and dry agricultural surfaces, holding up on firm soil or slick, wet ground through seasonal changes
- MAXIMIZE TRANSPORT STABILITY: Balanced construction improves handling and control during transport and field work, supporting confident maneuvering across uneven farm terrain
- REINFORCED NYLON CASING: Tough internal construction resists punctures and wear for reliable long-term use, holding up under demanding daily agricultural workloads
- BUILT FOR EVERYDAY FARM WORK: Designed to meet the demands of plowing, hauling, and utility tasks, this tire supports the full range of daily agricultural applications
- CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE IN ANY WEATHER: Built to hold up across temperature swings and shifting terrain, delivering steady results in wet, dry, or mixed field conditions
- Machine and wheel position: Verify the exact tire size and that it is intended for the machine and axle or wheel position.
- Load capacity: Match the tire’s capacity to the load it will carry in the intended work.
- Speed requirements: Check that the tire’s speed rating is appropriate for how the machine will be operated.
- Inflation guidance: Use the tire and equipment makers’ recommendations for the actual load and conditions. Pressure affects traction and soil impact, but there is no single pressure value established for every tire and machine. Michelin; Bridgestone / Firestone on tractor efficiency.
- Where the machine spends its time: Decide whether its main job is field work, turf care, hard-surface work or a mix; that can change which tread category makes sense.
Manufacturers use R labels to identify tread standards, rather than to specify every detail of tire performance. Farm Progress attributes this explanation to Brad Harris, Firestone Ag’s manager of global field engineering: “For tractor tires, manufacturers use R1, R1W, R2 and R3 to signify the tread depth standard the tire was designed to meet,” Harris says. Farm Progress.
What the tread code cannot tell you
The category helps narrow the application, but it does not establish the correct tire for an unspecified tractor or implement. Nor do the cited tread-depth comparisons prove gains in yield or fuel savings, or determine soil compaction. Those outcomes depend on the actual tire, machine, load and operating conditions; confirm fit and operating recommendations with the tire and equipment manufacturers.
