Formula One cars for the 2026 season use a hybrid power unit built around a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 internal-combustion engine (ICE), combined with electrical energy recovery and deployment. The FIA’s 2026 targets put the ICE at approximately 400 kW and the electric motor at up to 350 kW. Adding those two maxima gives 750 kW, roughly 1,006 mechanical horsepower, but that total is our own arithmetic, not an official combined rating from the FIA, and the two maxima are not available at the same moment on track.
What engine does a 2026 F1 car use?
The power unit is a hybrid. The combustion side is a 1.6-litre V6 with a turbocharger. The electrical side is built around the motor-generator unit (MGU-K), which recovers energy during braking and feeds it back as a boost of electrical power. For 2026 the FIA has removed the MGU-H, the component that previously recovered energy from the turbocharger’s exhaust flow. The combustion engine and the electrical system therefore work as two separate sources of power that the car draws on together.
How much horsepower does an F1 car have?
There is no single official horsepower figure for a complete F1 car. The FIA publishes power targets for each component, and those figures are the most reliable basis for any number you quote.
| Element (2026 regulations) | FIA figure | Approximate mechanical hp (our conversion, 1 kW = 1.341 hp) |
|---|---|---|
| Internal-combustion engine (1.6-litre V6) | Approximately 400 kW | About 536 hp |
| Electrical power (MGU-K) | Up to 350 kW | About 469 hp |
| Simple sum of the two maxima | 750 kW (not an FIA rating) | About 1,006 hp (not an FIA rating) |
The 1,006 hp figure is useful as a rough sense of scale, but it has three limits. It assumes both maxima happen at once, which the rules do not guarantee. It is not a dyno or on-track measurement. And it is not a rating the FIA has published for the whole car.

Why the electrical output varies around a lap
The 350 kW electrical figure is a ceiling, not a constant. In an April 2026 refinement made after the first three rounds, the FIA said MGU-K deployment would stay at 350 kW in key acceleration zones and be limited to 250 kW elsewhere on the circuit. Where you are on the track therefore changes how much electrical power the car can deliver. Quoting 350 kW as the power available at every point on a lap overstates what happens in practice.
Because deployment is zone-based, the ICE output is the steadier part of the picture. Electrical power is the variable part, and it depends on the track layout, the rules in force for the event, and how the energy store is managed through a lap.

How 2026 compares with the previous generation
Earlier F1 power units, used up to the 2025 season, were rated differently. The FIA’s comparison figures for that generation put the ICE element at 550–560 kW and the battery element at 120 kW. Those numbers are component figures under the earlier rules and should not be placed in the same sentence as 2026 figures as if they measured the same thing.
| Element | Previous generation (FIA comparison figure) | 2026 (FIA target) |
|---|---|---|
| Internal-combustion engine | 550–560 kW | Approximately 400 kW |
| Electrical element | 120 kW (battery element) | Up to 350 kW (MGU-K) |
| Energy recovery from turbo exhaust | MGU-H present | MGU-H removed |
The electrical element is much larger in 2026, while the combustion engine is rated lower. Any comparison of total output across seasons therefore needs the same caveats as the 2026 figures: these are component ceilings, not combined, continuous outputs.

How to quote F1 engine power correctly
- Always state the season. Use “2026 regulations” or “the 2026 power unit” rather than a bare “F1 horsepower” figure.
- Name the component. Say “ICE target of about 400 kW” or “electrical output up to 350 kW,” not a single car-wide number.
- Label any combined figure as arithmetic. “About 1,006 hp if the two maxima are added” is accurate. “F1 cars make 1,006 hp” is not.
- Note the deployment limits. Mention that the 350 kW electrical maximum applies in key acceleration zones and drops to 250 kW elsewhere.
- Attribute the figures to the FIA and give the regulation date where it matters. The FIA’s 2026 technical regulations are listed as Section C, Issue 20, dated 2026-08-05 and published 2026-10-01.
What is not established
The FIA’s published material gives component targets and comparisons. It does not give a single horsepower rating for a complete 2026 car, and it does not publish measured on-track output for the power unit as a whole. Teams do not all publish their own peak numbers either. If you need a precise figure for a specific car, team, or race, look for a dated statement from the FIA or the team, and treat any figure without a stated season and component as an approximation.
Readers who came here for a single answer can use the following: a 2026 F1 car uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid with an ICE target of about 400 kW and electrical power of up to 350 kW, which together come to roughly 1,006 mechanical horsepower on paper.
