The only complete invoice reported in public is from 2020: EV Model Compare described a Tesla Service charge of $13,500 for a remanufactured Model 3 pack plus $2,299.27 labor. That figure is a historical example, not a 2026 quote or a price range. For a car still under warranty, the real cost may be $0, and for a car outside warranty, the amount depends on the diagnosis, the pack type, and the shop doing the work.
What the price evidence actually shows
Three kinds of information circulate online, and they answer different questions. Only one of them is an actual charge.
- Official Tesla sources describe warranty coverage and repair procedures but do not list a retail price for a Model 3 pack. Tesla’s Model 3 New Vehicle Limited Warranty (North America) governs whether a battery repair is free, and Tesla’s service documentation governs how the work is done.
- A single historical invoice reported by EV Model Compare (article updated September 23, 2026) shows $13,500 for a remanufactured pack and $2,299.27 for labor on a 2020 Tesla Service invoice. Prices for Tesla parts and labor have changed since then, so use the figures only as a reference point.
- Generic estimates from other sites are not tied to a specific Model 3 trim, year, or service center, and should not be treated as quotes.
Because the one invoice is from 2020 and covers a single case, it cannot be averaged, projected forward, or described as typical.
Step one: check whether the warranty covers the repair
For most owners, warranty status is the decisive variable. Tesla’s North American Model 3 warranty sets different battery coverage periods depending on which battery the car has:

| Long Range Battery | 8 years or 120,000 miles | At least 70% over the warranty period |
These terms are as published in the warranty booklet at the time of writing (October 2026). Exclusions apply, and the booklet controls, so confirm your car’s battery configuration and remaining coverage before assuming anything.
What Tesla promises when it replaces a battery under warranty
A warranty repair does not guarantee a brand-new pack. Tesla states that it will “repair the unit, or replace it with a new, reconditioned or remanufactured part at the sole discretion of Tesla.” The same warranty says a replacement battery’s energy capacity will be at least equal to the original battery’s capacity before failure, taking age and mileage into account. Owners should expect the replacement to meet that capacity standard, not to match a new-from-factory pack.
Where warranty work must be done
Tesla’s Vehicle Warranty support page distinguishes between warranty and non-warranty work. Warranty repairs require taking the vehicle to a Tesla Service Center. For non-warranty repairs, the same page says: “For any non-warranty repair or maintenance, you may use a Tesla Service Center or visit your preferred non-Tesla vehicle service center.” Tesla also states that it is not responsible for problems caused by improper third-party work, so a non-Tesla repair outside warranty carries its own risk and documentation needs.
Rank #2
- Battery included is the original CR2354 3V that comes in each Tesla Model X key fob.
- Opening tool is included to remove both the back cover and the battery.
- Compatible with the Tesla Model X only. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH TESLA MODEL S, MODEL 3, OR MODEL Y. Recommended before or after seeing the "Key battery needs replacing" message on the cars dashboard.
- Avoid a service appointment for a replacement battery. This is an easy replacement and install.
- The key fob itself is not included. This is for the battery and opening tool only.
Check for an extended service agreement
The same support page describes a possible Model 3 and Model Y High Voltage Battery and Drive Unit Extended Service Agreement for eligible owners. Eligibility depends on the specific vehicle and the contract terms, so check the agreement itself rather than relying on a summary.
What the 2020 invoice does and does not tell you
The reported invoice is useful mainly for showing how the bill was split. It does not show taxes, diagnostic fees, coolant work, or other items, because those are not reported.
| Line item | Reported amount | Source and date | Current equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remanufactured Model 3 pack | $13,500 | EV Model Compare, 2020 Tesla Service invoice | Not stated |
| Labor | $2,299.27 | EV Model Compare, 2020 Tesla Service invoice | Not stated |
| Taxes, diagnostics, towing, coolant, or other work | Not stated | Not stated in the reported invoice | Not stated |
| Invoice total | Not stated | Not stated in the reported invoice | Not stated |
Adding the two reported line items gives $15,799.27, but that sum is arithmetic on two figures, not a reported invoice total. Treat it as a reference for the 2020 example only.

Documents that look like price lists but are not
Tesla’s High-Priced Propulsion-Related Parts document for Model 3, effective August 18, 2025, concerns warranty coverage for 2026-and-later Model 3 trims in California. It is not a parts price list, and it does not give a battery replacement cost.
Why the same repair can cost very different amounts
The 2020 invoice is one configuration, one date, and one set of charges. Several variables can move the final number.
Battery configuration and model year
Standard, Mid-Range, and Long Range batteries are different packs. A quote must name the exact trim and model year, because a pack that fits one configuration may not fit another. Ask the shop to confirm compatibility with your VIN before accepting a quote.

Diagnosis comes first
Low range is not proof of a failed battery. Tesla notes that displayed range estimates are an imperfect measure of battery capacity. Confirm the diagnosis with the service provider, and get the findings in writing before any pack is ordered. A diagnosis may also reveal a different fault that makes a full pack replacement unnecessary.
Pack type: new, reconditioned, remanufactured, or used
Tesla’s warranty permits new, reconditioned, or remanufactured parts. The 2020 invoice used a remanufactured pack. A quote should state which condition is being offered, because the condition affects price, warranty length, and expected capacity.
Work included beyond the pack
Quotes often differ because one includes programming, coolant, seals, or other added work and another does not. Compare the scope line by line rather than the headline total.

Labor and location
Tesla’s published procedure for replacing an AWD high-voltage battery lists correction code 16010202 at 5.40 flat-rate hours, for 2017–2023 Model 3 AWD vehicles. That is a labor-time value used in the procedure, not a consumer labor rate, and it does not tell you what a shop will charge. Labor rates vary by region and by provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the replacement is performed
Tesla’s HV Battery (AWD) Remove and Replace procedure in the 2017–2023 Model 3 service manual states that only technicians who have completed the required certification courses may perform it. The battery is high-voltage equipment, so this is not a do-it-yourself job, and no safe DIY version of the procedure is covered here.
Tesla Service or an independent high-voltage shop
For a non-warranty repair, the choice is between Tesla Service and a qualified non-Tesla provider. Compare the following on every quote:
- The written diagnostic findings and whether the quote covers a full pack or a narrower repair
- Pack condition (new, reconditioned, remanufactured, or used) and whether a capacity guarantee is offered
- Confirmed compatibility with your exact trim and model year
- Labor, programming, coolant, seals, and any other added work, itemized separately
- Taxes, towing, and any diagnostic fee
- Parts and labor warranty terms, in writing
- Turnaround time and loaner or rental arrangements
- Technician qualifications for high-voltage work
Choosing a non-Tesla provider for non-warranty work does not change warranty status for other covered components in the way that a warranty repair would, and Tesla’s position is that it is not responsible for problems caused by improper third-party work. Keep all invoices and diagnostic records for both your own reference and any future claim.
How to get a usable quote
- Confirm warranty status first. Check the battery configuration and mileage against the coverage table above, and check any extended service agreement.
- If the car is under warranty, schedule the repair at a Tesla Service Center, since warranty work must be done there.
- If the car is out of warranty, request a written diagnosis that names the fault and the test results used to reach it.
- Ask for a quote that names the exact VIN, trim, and model year, and states the pack condition being offered.
- Compare each quote against the checklist above, line by line.
- Get the warranty terms for the parts and the labor in writing before authorizing work.
A quote that cannot name the pack condition, the VIN-matched part, or the labor scope is not yet comparable to the others.
Current limits of public cost information
Tesla has not published a current retail price for a Model 3 battery replacement in the sources reviewed for this article, and no broad market study of such costs was identified. Until a current invoice or written quote is in hand, the only defensible figure is the 2020 example described above. Do not apply it to a 2026 car, to a different battery configuration, or to a different region.
