What to Pack for a Long Road Trip Through Remote Areas

A practical remote-road packing guide covering survival supplies, vehicle and tire preparation, navigation, communications, trip plans, and what to do if stranded.

Pack for a breakdown that could leave you waiting hours—or overnight—without cell service or nearby help. Bring extra water and food, necessary medicines, weather-appropriate clothing, first aid, light, reliable navigation, and a communication option suited to your route. Make sure your vehicle, spare tire, jack, and recovery equipment match the road, and leave someone a detailed trip plan and return time.

Plan for the delay, not just the drive

On a remote road, a flat tire or mechanical problem can become a prolonged wait: there may be no nearby services, passing traffic, or dependable cellular coverage. Pack enough to stay safe if the trip takes much longer than scheduled, including an unplanned overnight stop. The right load depends on the route, forecast, season, vehicle, and passengers; check the land manager’s current road guidance before leaving.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Think in three layers: personal supplies to sustain and protect everyone, vehicle and recovery gear to address likely problems, and navigation and communications to help you avoid trouble or summon assistance. Gear is only useful if it suits the road and you know how to use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing equipment, identify the remote portions of the route—not just the start and destination. Ask how long you could be without services, what the road surface is like, whether your vehicle is appropriate, and what conditions are expected overnight. A kit assembled for a paved highway may not cover a rough backcountry road, while heavy recovery equipment is not automatically useful or safe on every route.

Pack supplies to sustain everyone

Water and food

Carry extra drinking water and nonperishable food for each person, with a margin for delays rather than only the planned driving time. Some national parks recommend supplies for several days in particular remote settings; use local guidance instead of treating any one quantity as universal.

For travel in Mojave National Preserve, the National Park Service recommends at least one gallon of water per person per day and says to carry extra emergency drinking water. Death Valley National Park likewise advises hot-weather backcountry travelers to carry at least a gallon per person per day, plus extra for people and vehicle contingencies. These are desert- and location-specific recommendations, not a universal rule for every climate, activity level, or trip. Check the relevant park or road manager’s current advice.

Think of the planned drive time as a baseline, not the amount to pack for. Delays can extend beyond the day’s itinerary, so leave enough water and food accessible for everyone rather than buried under luggage. If the route crosses different elevations or weather zones, reassess the supplies and clothing for the conditions along the route, not only those at departure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Medicine, first aid, and clothing

  • Bring necessary prescription medicines and a first-aid kit. Keep medicines accessible and protected from conditions that could damage them.
  • Pack clothing for the forecast and likely overnight conditions, including layers suitable for expected heat or cold. A warm, sunny departure does not guarantee comfortable conditions after dark or at a higher elevation.
  • If a forced overnight stop is plausible, bring sleeping gear appropriate to the conditions. Do not count on being able to reach lodging or a service station.

Make these supplies easy to reach in a delay. A medicine bag or warm layer packed at the bottom of the vehicle may be difficult to access safely on the roadside. Check that what you bring is appropriate for the people traveling and the conditions expected; guidance emphasizes planning for necessary medicines and first aid, not a single universal kit prescription.

Light and signaling

Pack a flashlight or headlamp and make sure its batteries are charged or that you have spares. A charged phone is useful even where service is uncertain. Basic signaling supplies, such as flares where appropriate, may also help make a stopped vehicle more visible; use them only in a way that is safe and appropriate for the location.

Light is especially useful if a delay continues after dark, when inspecting the vehicle or locating supplies becomes harder. Treat signaling equipment as a supplement to the communication plan, not a substitute for it. Check that any signaling supply is suitable for the route and local conditions.

Prepare the vehicle and tire contingency

Match the vehicle to the route

Confirm that the planned road is suitable for your vehicle and your experience. Some unpaved or rough roads may call for greater clearance, four-wheel drive, or specialized equipment; others may be unsuitable for a passenger vehicle. Follow the land manager’s current route guidance and turn back if the road, vehicle, or your ability to handle it do not match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before departure, check the vehicle’s condition, tires, lights, fluid levels, and fuel. Top off the fuel before entering a remote backcountry section. Tire type and condition matter more when help is far away, so inspect the tires and confirm that the spare is present and properly inflated.

Do not assume that a vehicle capable of reaching the start of a route can safely travel every section of it. Compare the route’s current guidance with your vehicle’s capability and your own experience. If the road requires equipment you do not have, or you are uncertain that you can handle the conditions, choose another route or turn around rather than relying on rescue gear to make an unsuitable trip safe.

Carry equipment for a flat tire

A spare and the tools to change it are the core contingency; repair gear adds another option rather than replacing a suitable spare. Check that you have a jack with a stable base, lug wrench, and any vehicle-specific tools required to remove and fit a wheel. A tire repair kit and portable compressor or pump can be useful, but only if compatible with your tires and if you know how to use them.

  • Verify that the spare is usable and properly inflated.
  • Confirm that the jack and lug wrench fit your vehicle and that the jack can be placed securely on the surfaces you expect.
  • Read the vehicle’s instructions for safe tire changing and practice using your repair equipment before the trip.
  • Do not assume a repair kit or compressor can handle every puncture or tire failure.

These are complementary preparations, not interchangeable ones. A spare with the correct changing tools provides a way to replace a damaged tire; a repair kit and compressor may help with some tire problems but cannot be assumed to fix every failure. Check the vehicle-specific instructions and equipment before departure, because discovering that a tool is missing or incompatible is too late once you are stopped on an isolated road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose recovery gear for the surface

Basic tools, a shovel, and other recovery items should be selected for the route and vehicle, not packed as a generic off-road bundle. National Park Service Joshua Tree guidance lists a tow strap and traction board among self-rescue examples, but those items are not suitable for every road or every driver. Recovery gear can create hazards if used without the right technique; do not attempt a recovery you are not equipped or trained to perform.

Use current route guidance to decide whether a recovery item is relevant. A tow strap or traction board does not make every surface or situation safe to tackle, and carrying an item is not the same as knowing how to use it. If the conditions are beyond your equipment or ability, prioritize a safe response and route-specific instructions over an improvised recovery attempt.

Plan for navigation and communication gaps

Use GPS and a detailed map

Save or print the route and relevant road-condition information before leaving an area with dependable service. Carry a detailed map as well as GPS: National Park Service guidance cautions against relying on GPS alone in remote areas, where it may be unreliable. Know the route and key turns well enough to continue if a device loses power or signal.

GPS and a map address different failure points. GPS can be convenient for following a route, but the cited park guidance warns that it may be unreliable in remote locations. A detailed map is a backup reference, especially when a device loses power or signal; neither removes the need to understand the route before setting out. Save or print road-condition information, too, so you are not relying on a live connection to learn about relevant conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose communications for the route

A charged cellular phone is useful, but it cannot provide dependable contact where cellular coverage is absent. For routes without reliable service, consider a satellite phone or messenger. Check whether the exact route has coverage, what service or subscription is required, and which functions your specific device currently supports. A satellite device does not guarantee that help will arrive or that a message can be delivered in every circumstance.

Option Useful for What to verify
Cellular phone Calling or messaging where a usable network is available; also useful for navigation and stored trip information. Do not assume coverage on remote sections. Save important information offline and keep the phone charged.
Satellite phone or messenger Communicating on routes where cellular coverage is not dependable. Check coverage for the route, service requirements, device compatibility, and current emergency functions. Do not treat the device as a rescue guarantee.

The choice is route-dependent: a phone is useful when a network is available, while a satellite device may provide an option where cellular service is not dependable. Before relying on a satellite device, verify its coverage and service requirements for the exact route and understand its current functions. No particular device or service is established to work everywhere, so do not assume that carrying one guarantees contact or rescue.

Leave a trip plan and check-in instructions

Give a reliable person a detailed plan before departure. Include your route, destination, expected return, and vehicle details where appropriate. Agree on when you will check in and what that person should do if you miss the agreed time. A plan is more useful when someone knows both where you intended to go and when to raise the alarm.

Make the plan specific enough to be acted on: distinguish the route you intend to take from a general destination, state your expected return, and agree on the missed-check-in response before leaving. Include vehicle details where appropriate. If the route changes, update the person who has your plan when you are able; a stale itinerary can make it harder to determine where you intended to be.

Check road conditions immediately before setting out, and review current closures or restrictions with the relevant road manager. A route that was passable when planned may not be suitable on departure day.

What to do if you are stranded

In many remote-road situations, staying with the vehicle is safer and makes you easier to find. The National Park Service’s Mojave National Preserve off-pavement guidance says, “Staying with your car is the most important thing you can do in the event of an emergency.” A vehicle can provide shelter and is a clearer search target than a person walking away from the route.

Follow local conditions and instructions rather than treating that advice as absolute. Death Valley guidance describes signaling and note-taking steps for someone who decides to walk out, but that is not a general instruction to leave a disabled vehicle. If you must depart because of an immediate hazard or local direction, use route-specific guidance and leave information that can help others determine where you went.

This is why the trip plan, supplies, and vehicle preparation work together. Staying with the vehicle may provide shelter and make you easier to locate, but what is safest depends on the situation and local instructions. Avoid turning one park’s guidance about a particular circumstance into a rule for every breakdown. Prepare to wait, and follow the applicable local guidance if conditions require a different response.

How much water should I pack for a remote road trip?

Carry extra water for everyone and plan for delays rather than only the scheduled drive. The National Park Service recommends at least one gallon per person per day for travel in Mojave National Preserve; Death Valley gives the same minimum for hot-weather backcountry travel and advises extra for people and vehicle contingencies. Those are location-specific desert recommendations, not a universal quantity. Check current advice for your route and conditions.

Is a tire repair kit enough, or do I need a spare?

These are additional, not interchangeable, preparations. Carry a suitable, properly inflated spare and the jack, lug wrench, and vehicle-specific tools needed to change it. A compatible repair kit and compressor or pump can add another option, but they cannot be assumed to handle every puncture or tire failure. Know how to use your equipment before departure.

Should I leave my vehicle if I’m stranded?

National Park Service guidance for Mojave National Preserve says staying with the car is the most important thing to do in an emergency; a vehicle can provide shelter and make you easier to find. Follow local conditions and instructions rather than treating this as an absolute rule. Death Valley describes signaling and note-taking steps for someone who decides to walk out, but that is not general advice to leave a disabled vehicle.

Do I need a satellite messenger if I have a phone?

A cellular phone is useful where a network is available, but it cannot provide dependable contact where coverage is absent. For routes without reliable service, consider a satellite phone or messenger and verify coverage for the exact route, service requirements, compatibility, and current emergency functions. No device is a guarantee that a message will be delivered or rescue will arrive.

The Bottom Line

For a remote road trip, pack for a delay that could last well beyond the planned drive: water, food, medicines, weather-appropriate clothing, first aid, light, and any needed sleeping gear. Match the vehicle, tires, spare, tools, and recovery equipment to the route; carry detailed navigation alongside GPS and plan communications for coverage gaps. Check current road conditions, share your route and return time with someone reliable, and know what to do if stranded.
