Pack for a long-distance bus journey in two parts: a small carry-on that stays with you and a labeled bag that may be stored under the bus. Keep your ticket, phone, wallet, medication, water, permitted snacks, charging cable, and anything needed during the ride in the carry-on. Add layers, a compact travel pillow, earplugs, and a sleep mask for comfort. Before leaving, check the booked operator’s current baggage allowance, prohibited items, food policy, stop schedule, and onboard facilities because rules differ by carrier, country, route, and vehicle.
Start with the operator’s rules
The most important packing step is checking the actual carrier and itinerary, not relying on a generic bus list. Allowances can differ between operators and may change for a connecting service. Confirm the number of bags included, maximum dimensions and weight, hand-luggage placement, extra charges, restricted items, and whether your ticket covers every segment.

For scale, National Express’s UK guidance (accessed in 2026) states one large item up to 20 kg and one small hand-luggage item up to 10 kg. That is a National Express allowance, not an industry-wide standard. Greyhound baggage rules can vary by region and itinerary, while Jefferson Lines publishes its own requirements. A multi-carrier trip may therefore require packing to the strictest allowance or paying a separate fee for one leg.

- Check whether a personal item must fit under the seat or in an overhead area.
- Look for limits on liquids, aerosols, sharp objects, batteries, alcohol, and perishable food.
- Save the boarding instructions and departure and arrival stop names offline.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) puts the practical point plainly in its official tip sheet: “Check luggage policies in advance.” Its 2019 U.S. guidance is useful for planning, but it does not replace the rules of your carrier.

Build the small carry-on first
Your carry-on should contain everything that would be difficult, expensive, or unsafe to lose when the under-bus compartment is inaccessible. Keep it compact enough to manage at boarding and small enough to remain within the operator’s hand-luggage limit.
| Pack in the carry-on | Why it belongs there | Practical way to pack it |
|---|---|---|
| Ticket, booking details, identification and required travel documents | They may be needed at boarding, during a connection, or when locating the correct stop. | Keep a digital copy available offline and carry any required original document. |
| Phone, wallet, keys and other valuables | Stored luggage can be out of reach during the ride and at stops. | Use a zipped inner pocket or a small organizer rather than an open seat pocket. |
| Necessary medication | Delays or a misplaced checked bag should not interrupt a prescribed schedule. | Keep medication in its original packaging when practical and follow your clinician’s storage instructions. |
| Water and permitted snacks | Stops may be widely spaced and onboard purchases may be unavailable. | Use a leak-resistant bottle and individually wrapped, non-perishable foods. |
| Charging cable, plug or adapter, and headphones | Power outlets and Wi-Fi are not guaranteed on every coach. | Coil cables in a small pouch and download entertainment before departure. |
| Tissues, wipes and travel-size hand sanitizer | They are useful for meals, shared surfaces and unexpected spills. | Put liquids in a sealed bag to protect documents and electronics. |
Keep the bag under the seat or in the designated hand-luggage area without blocking the aisle. If staff require a hand bag to be stored below, remove medication, documents, electronics and anything needed at the next stop before handing it over.
Choose clothing for a moving, air-conditioned cabin
Long rides alternate between standing in a terminal, sitting for hours and entering vehicles with different temperatures. Wear flexible clothing and pack adjustable layers rather than one heavy coat that is awkward to manage in a narrow seat.

- Pack a lightweight sweater, fleece or overshirt that can be removed easily.
- Bring spare socks; they take little space and help if your feet become cold or damp.
- Use supportive, easy-to-remove shoes for rest stops and overnight boarding.
- Carry a rain layer or compact umbrella when the forecast and walking connections warrant it.
Avoid clothing with hard protrusions, strong fragrances or loose accessories that can snag on seats. If you sleep in regular clothes, choose a clean shirt and underwear in the carry-on rather than opening stored luggage at a roadside stop.

Pack deliberately for sleep
Overnight buses rarely provide the same sleeping environment as a bed. FMCSA suggests layers, a small blanket, a travel pillow, earplugs and a sleep mask. These are optional and space-dependent, so select the items that solve your own discomfort instead of filling the bag with bulky bedding.
Travel pillow
A compact neck or lumbar pillow can support your head when the seat reclines only slightly. Test its shape before travel; a pillow that pushes your head forward can be worse than no pillow. Compressible designs are easier to store after waking.
Blanket and warmth
A small fleece or scarf-sized blanket adds warmth without taking the space of a full sleeping bag. Keep it in the carry-on so you can use it immediately after boarding. Do not assume the operator supplies blankets.

Noise and light control
Earplugs reduce engine, conversation and stop noise; headphones can provide audio but may be uncomfortable while sleeping. A sleep mask helps when cabin lights, street lighting or a neighbor’s screen interrupts darkness. Keep one ear free or use a low-volume alarm strategy if you must hear a boarding announcement.

Plan food and drinks around the route
FMCSA recommends drinks and non-perishable snacks because stop options can be limited. Carry only what the operator permits and what you can consume without creating strong odors, crumbs or spills in a shared cabin.
- Choose sealed, shelf-stable items such as crackers, cereal bars, nuts if permitted, dried fruit or sandwiches that do not require refrigeration.
- Use a bottle with a secure lid; fill it after security or at a permitted station when the route allows.
- Pack a small bag for wrappers and a few napkins so you can leave your seat area clean.
- Limit foods that melt, leak or need utensils during a moving ride.
- Check whether the operator restricts hot drinks, glass containers, alcohol or foods with strong odors.
Jefferson Lines states that food and non-alcoholic beverages may be carried and that long-haul routes have scheduled breaks. That policy applies to Jefferson Lines services, not every bus. Go Buses and other operators publish their own food and stop guidance, so read the policy for your booking and note the expected break length before deciding how much to carry.
Do not assume the bus has the amenities you need
Some coaches provide Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, air conditioning controls and an onboard toilet; others may provide only some of these features. National Express describes facilities on its core UK services, and Greyhound lists features for its buses, but a feature shown on an operator’s general page may not apply to every vehicle or route.

Prepare stored luggage so it can be identified and left alone
Label every bag that goes under the bus. National Express and Greyhound advise identifying luggage; Greyhound specifically recommends contact details on the outside and inside. Use a durable tag with your name and a reachable phone number or email, and place a second card inside the bag in case the external tag is torn off.
- Photograph the open bag and its exterior before handing it over.
- Remove passports, cash, medication, electronics, keys and documents needed during the trip.
- Secure zippers and avoid dangling straps that can catch during loading.
- Use a distinctive, non-expensive marker such as a colored strap so you can spot the bag quickly at a crowded stop.
- Check whether the carrier issues a claim tag, and keep that tag with your ticket.
Do not pack anything you may need between the origin and destination in the hold. A scheduled stop is not a guarantee that passengers can access stored compartments, and another passenger may collect a similar-looking bag by mistake.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to pack for an overnight or very long route
For a night journey, add only items that improve several hours of sitting and limited access to luggage:
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and other travel-size toiletries in a leak-proof pouch.
- Face wipes or a small washcloth for a refresh when there is no convenient shower.
- Spare underwear and a clean top in the carry-on.
- Glasses case or contact-lens supplies, including enough solution for the trip.
- A simple alarm plan that will not disturb neighboring passengers.
Keep toiletries within the relevant liquid and security limits for your departure point. If you have a medical condition, pack the supplies and food you need rather than assuming a stop will have a suitable option.

Accessibility, medical and special-care considerations
Contact the operator before travel if you use a mobility aid, require an accessible seat, travel with medical equipment or need help boarding. Ask where the aid will be stored, whether it can remain with you, and how connections are handled. Carry written instructions for essential equipment and keep critical medication in your personal bag.
Passengers prone to motion sickness may want doctor-approved medication, a disposable bag, tissues and water within reach. If you have food allergies, bring safe snacks and confirm the carrier’s policy rather than relying on a stop or onboard service. Parents should add diapers, wipes, a change of clothes and quiet activities to the carry-on while keeping the bag small enough to manage during boarding.
A simple packing method before departure
- Read the itinerary. Confirm each operator, departure time, boarding location, arrival stop and connection.
- Check each carrier’s current rules. Record bag count, size, weight, fees, restricted items, food policy and amenity list.
- Make the ride kit. Put documents, valuables, medication, water, snacks, hygiene items, electronics and comfort gear in the small carry-on.
- Test access. Sit with the packed bag beside you and make sure you can retrieve the items needed without unpacking everything.
- Charge and download. Fully charge devices, save tickets and directions offline, and pack the cable and adapter together.
- Weigh and label stored bags. Compare the result with every operator’s limit, attach external and internal identification, and keep any claim tag.
- Recheck on travel day. Look for service alerts, changed boarding instructions, weather issues and updated baggage or food notices.
Common packing mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Putting medication or documents in the stored bag | The hold may be inaccessible for the entire ride. | Move them to a zipped section of the carry-on before boarding. |
| Packing to a familiar carrier’s allowance | A connecting operator may have lower limits or different fees. | Check every segment and use the strictest limit. |
| Relying on onboard Wi-Fi or outlets | Availability varies by vehicle and signal may disappear. | Charge beforehand and prepare offline entertainment and directions. |
| Bringing unsealed or messy food | Leaks, odors and crumbs affect other passengers and your belongings. | Use sealed, non-perishable portions and carry waste bags. |
| Taking an unmarked black suitcase | Similar bags are easy to claim accidentally at stops. | Add a durable tag, an internal contact card and a visible identifier. |
| Overpacking comfort gear | Bulky items reduce space for essentials and can breach hand-luggage limits. | Choose one pillow, one warm layer and only the sleep aids you will use. |
Final departure checklist
- Ticket, identification and connection details are accessible.
- Phone, wallet, keys, valuables and necessary medication are in the carry-on.
- Water and permitted snacks are sealed and easy to reach.
- Charging cable, adapter, headphones and offline content are ready.
- Layers, spare socks, pillow, blanket, earplugs and sleep mask match your needs.
- Tissues, wipes, sanitizer and essential toiletries are packed securely.
- Stored luggage meets the exact carrier limits and has internal and external contact details.
- You know where the bus departs, where it arrives, how long stops last and how to reach the next destination.
Pack for the ride rather than only for the destination: keep critical items within reach, make comfort adjustable, and treat every carrier’s policy and amenities as route-specific information that must be checked before boarding.
