What to Look for in an Electric SUV for Off-Road Driving (2026 Guide)

A practical framework for choosing an electric SUV for off-road driving, with configuration-specific geometry, traction, battery protection, tire, water, range, payload and towing checks.

The best electric SUV for off-road driving is not determined by battery size or a marketing badge. Compare the exact vehicle’s ground clearance and approach, departure, and breakover angles; low-speed traction controls; battery protection; tires; water limit; loaded range and charging plan; payload; and towing rating. Every figure must match the model year, trim, wheel package, suspension setting, market and operating conditions. No standardized independent test establishes one universal winner, so use the framework below to match an SUV to your terrain and trip.

Start with the dimensions that keep an SUV off the ground

Off-road geometry determines whether the vehicle clears an obstacle or strikes its bumper, rocker panel or battery enclosure. Request the minimum ground clearance and the approach, departure and breakover angles for the exact configuration you would buy.

Ground clearance

Ground clearance is the lowest point between the tires, but manufacturers may quote clearance at a particular ride height and may measure between the axles rather than at every underbody component. Ask whether the number is fixed or available only with adjustable suspension, and whether it applies to an unloaded vehicle. More clearance reduces belly strikes, but a high figure does not help if the lowest battery shield or suspension link sits lower.

Approach, departure and breakover angles

  • Approach angle: the steepest ramp the front of the SUV can climb without the bumper or front underbody touching.
  • Departure angle: the equivalent limit at the rear when descending or cresting an obstacle.
  • Breakover angle: the crest angle the SUV can pass without grounding its center section.

Compare angles measured with the same ride height and loading. A long wheelbase can make breakover more restrictive even when approach and departure numbers look strong. Also check turning circle and the width of the trail; clearance between rocks matters as much as the published angles.

A manufacturer example, not a class benchmark

Mercedes-Benz lists the G 580 with EQ Technology at 9.8 inches of clearance between the axles, a 32-degree approach angle, a 30.7-degree departure angle and a 20.3-degree breakover angle. The company also lists up to a 100 percent grade on suitable surfaces and lateral stability up to 35 degrees. Those are manufacturer specifications for that vehicle, not proof that every electric SUV with a similar number will perform the same way. See the Mercedes-Benz 2024 specification release.

Evaluate low-speed traction and control

Electric motors can meter torque precisely, but the useful question is how the SUV exposes that control to the driver on loose climbs, ledges and descents.

What to look for

  • Selectable all-wheel-drive or terrain modes that explain their operating limits.
  • Low-range gearing, a crawl function or another system that holds a very slow speed without repeated brake inputs.
  • Individual motor control, torque vectoring or locking strategies that limit wheelspin when one tire unloads.
  • Hill-descent control with predictable speed adjustment and a way to disengage it safely.
  • Suspension height settings that preserve clearance without creating excessive driveline or tire stress.

The G 580 illustrates the type of equipment to compare: four individually controlled electric motors, virtual differential locks through torque vectoring, selectable LOW RANGE gearing and an off-road crawl function. These features indicate a design approach; they do not make it universally superior on every surface.

Inspect battery and underbody protection

The high-voltage pack is the vehicle’s most consequential exposed component. Look underneath the exact trim and ask what protects the pack, motor housings, cooling lines, high-voltage cables and jack points.

Questions for a dealer or manufacturer

  • Is the battery enclosed by a reinforced frame, a dedicated shield or both?
  • Which panels are structural and which are sacrificial skid plates?
  • Where are the approved lifting, towing and recovery points?
  • What inspection is required after a rock impact, flood or underbody strike?
  • Do the warranty terms exclude impact, water intrusion or non-approved modifications?

Mercedes-Benz says the G 580 battery is integrated into a reinforced ladder frame and describes underbody protection. Treat that as the company’s construction claim and verify equivalent details for other models rather than inferring protection from appearance. The manufacturer’s model information is available at the 2025 electric G-Class page.

Use water-fording numbers carefully

Water depth is a model-specific operating limit, not a promise that every river crossing is safe. Depth can change across a crossing, and current, mud, rocks, debris and a submerged drop-off can overwhelm a vehicle below its published limit.

Read the conditions attached to the number

  • Confirm the model, model year, suspension setting and wheel/tire configuration.
  • Check the permitted speed and whether doors, windows and storage compartments must remain closed.
  • Walk or probe the crossing when safe, assess the bottom and avoid strong crosscurrents.
  • Follow the post-crossing inspection and brake-drying instructions in the owner’s manual.

Rivian’s 2025 R1S Owner’s Guide, version 2024.27, states a maximum crossing depth of 39 inches (1 meter) at up to 5 mph (8 km/h), while directing the driver to assess depth, bottom conditions and debris and warning against crosscurrents. The guide is dated July 22, 2024 and is available as a 2025 R1S owner manual.

Rivian’s current model FAQ lists different maximum fording heights: 43.0 inches for R1S, 43.1 inches for R1T and 19.7 inches for R2, with conditions on suspension settings, wheel size and closed doors and storage spaces. Because the website and the R1S manual state different figures, never merge them into one generic R1S specification; cite the source version and conditions you are using. The current FAQ is at Rivian’s model page.

Choose tires and wheels as part of the capability package

Tires are the contact patch that converts motor torque into traction. All-terrain tread, sidewall strength, load rating and a usable spare or repair plan can matter more on a rocky trail than a small difference in peak power. Larger wheels may reduce sidewall height and increase the risk of rim damage, while aggressive tread can increase noise and energy consumption on pavement.

Pressure and reinflation

Follow the exact manual for pressure changes; do not copy another vehicle’s numbers. The 2025 R1S guide gives recommended minimum off-road pressures of 31 psi for 275/65R20 tires, 33 psi for 275/60R20 and 34 psi for HL275/50R22, for specified off-road modes and rough-terrain or deep-snow conditions. It instructs drivers to raise pressure before returning to the road and to use an air compressor. Those values are R1S guidance, not general electric-SUV advice.

Carry a 12-volt inflator or compatible compressor only after checking the vehicle’s outlet, connector, duty cycle and tire size. A compressor that can reach pressure but overheats before all four tires are restored is not adequate for remote travel.

Plan range for the route, not the brochure

Trail speed can be low, but soft surfaces, elevation, cold weather, heavy tires, roof loads, passengers and towing all change energy use. Use the vehicle’s usable battery capacity and a conservative trip plan rather than the headline range.

Build a charging and reserve plan

  1. Map the last reliable fast charger before the trail and the first dependable charger after it.
  2. Estimate energy for the return leg, detours and weather, then add a reserve you can afford to keep.
  3. Check whether the charging site is accessible with a trailer, open during your trip and compatible with the vehicle’s connector and payment method.
  4. Decide in advance what point will trigger a turnaround; do not spend the reserve searching for a charger.

No standardized trail-range comparison is established for the vehicles discussed here. Treat range estimates as route planning inputs, not an off-road performance ranking.

Match payload, passengers and towing to the trip

Camping equipment, recovery tools, food, water and passengers consume payload. A roof rack or trailer adds aerodynamic drag and can reduce range as well as available capacity. Verify the door-jamb payload label and the manual’s axle and tongue-weight limits for the exact vehicle.

Towing ratings can depend on the hitch. Rivian states 5,000 pounds without a weight-distributing hitch and lists 7,700 pounds for 2025-and-newer R1S configurations, while noting that capacity varies by vehicle and hitch. Confirm the exact configuration and market in the vehicle manual before relying on either figure. A trailer also changes departure angle, turning space, braking distance and charging access.

Compare candidates on one worksheet

When two or more SUVs remain on your list, record the same fields for each one and label every value with its configuration and source.

Axis What to record Why it matters
Geometry and suspension Minimum and adjustable clearance; approach, departure and breakover angles; suspension travel; ride-height conditions Predicts obstacle clearance and belly-strike risk.
Traction and control Motor layout, terrain modes, crawl or hill-descent control, low range, locking or torque-vectoring behavior Controls wheelspin and speed on loose or steep ground.
Battery and underbody Shielding, frame structure, exposed components, approved jack/recovery points and impact warranty terms Protects the high-voltage system and defines recoverability.
Tires and wheels Approved sizes, all-terrain availability, sidewall/load rating, spare or repair plan and pressure instructions Determines traction, puncture resistance, ride, noise and energy use.
Water limits Exact depth, speed, current and closure conditions plus post-crossing steps Keeps a published limit from being mistaken for universal safety.
Range and charging Usable trip range under load, temperature and terrain; charger coverage and reserve Remote travel depends on access, not just battery size.
Capacity Payload, passenger and cargo room, towing rating, hitch requirements and turning envelope Gear and trailers alter both capacity and trail behavior.
Service and ownership Warranty exclusions, tire repair/spare availability, service locations and recovery instructions A minor failure can become a major recovery problem far from a road.

A practical buying and preparation sequence

  1. Define the terrain. Separate gravel roads, sand, mud, snow, rocky ledges and water crossings; each stresses a different part of the vehicle.
  2. Set the loaded requirement. List passengers, cargo, roof equipment and trailer weight before comparing ratings.
  3. Collect configuration-specific specifications. Save the manual and manufacturer pages for the model year, trim, wheels and suspension setting you will actually purchase.
  4. Inspect the underside. Locate battery shields, cooling components, jack points and recovery points in person or through detailed manufacturer documentation.
  5. Verify tires and pressure procedures. Confirm approved fitment, load rating, spare strategy and how the vehicle returns to road pressure.
  6. Plan a conservative route. Identify charging, weather limits, water alternatives, turnaround points and recovery access.
  7. Test the controls before the trail. Learn terrain modes, low range, crawl or descent control and the vehicle’s warnings on a safe surface.
  8. Recheck after modifications. A lift, wheel change, skid plate or roof load can alter clearance, angles, payload, warranty coverage and range.

Common buying mistakes and their fixes

  • Choosing by horsepower or battery capacity alone: replace the headline comparison with geometry, control, protection and loaded-trip data.
  • Using a number from another trim: record wheel size, ride height, model year and measurement conditions beside every specification.
  • Treating water depth as a target: avoid crossings with uncertain bottom, current or debris even when the stated depth is lower than the limit.
  • Lowering pressure without a reinflation plan: carry a compatible compressor and restore road pressure before driving at highway speed.
  • Assuming towing is one fixed number: verify hitch type, tongue weight, payload and the exact configuration.
  • Ignoring recovery and service: confirm approved recovery points, post-impact procedures, tire repair options and nearby service before remote trips.

What the available model evidence can—and cannot—say

The G 580 specification set demonstrates how an electric SUV can combine four-motor control, low range, crawl assistance, substantial clearance and published stability figures. In a company press release, Mercedes-Benz Chief Technology Officer Markus Schäfer described the four-motor system as raising the electric G-Class’s off-road capability while retaining the model’s character; that is the manufacturer’s perspective, not an independent evaluation.

The R1S documents demonstrate why manual and website versions must be separated: water limits, tire pressures and towing figures are conditional and can differ by configuration or publication date. Together, these examples provide comparison axes, not a defensible ranking. Choose the SUV whose verified geometry, protection, controls, tires, range plan and capacity fit your actual terrain and market.
