A crash-test score is a starting point, not a complete safety assessment. To compare cars responsibly, examine crashworthiness, crash-avoidance performance, headlights, restraints and child-seat hardware, vehicle size and weight, the exact trim and build date, and recall status. Then confirm how the equipment works in the owner’s manual and during a supervised test drive.
Understand what a crash-test score actually measures
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 5-Star Safety Ratings program evaluates three broad crash scenarios: frontal impact, side impact and rollover resistance. Those results describe how a vehicle performed in specified tests; they do not rate every technology or every real-world collision.

A high star rating therefore cannot tell you whether a car has effective pedestrian detection, good headlight reach, usable child-seat anchors or an uncompleted safety recall. Treat the score as evidence about crashworthiness, then investigate the other safety questions separately.

Use NHTSA’s comparison rules
NHTSA says frontal ratings and overall scores should be compared only among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another. A much heavier vehicle can have an advantage in a frontal collision, so comparing its overall stars directly with a substantially lighter car can mislead. NHTSA allows side-impact and rollover ratings to be compared across classes.

“Not rated” has a precise meaning: the vehicle was not tested for that condition. It does not mean the vehicle failed. Record the missing test and decide whether that uncertainty matters for your purchase.
Look at crashworthiness details, not only the headline number
Crashworthiness is the vehicle’s ability to protect occupants after a crash begins. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) describes a sound design as one with a strong occupant compartment, controlled crumple zones, robust side structure and roof strength, and effective belts and airbags.
Check the individual test categories
- Frontal protection: review the specific frontal test result rather than relying on the overall stars, and keep NHTSA’s class-and-weight rule in mind.
- Side protection: inspect the separate side result, including how the structure and side airbags protect the head and torso.
- Rollover resistance: use the rollover result as a measure of resistance to tipping, not as a promise that a rollover will never occur.
IIHS awards and ratings add another layer of detail, but an award badge is still a summary of defined tests. Read which tests were required for the model year and whether the rating applies to the exact configuration you are considering.
Evaluate crash-avoidance systems by scenario
Crash avoidance can prevent a collision or reduce its severity before the structure is tested. Systems that share similar marketing names can differ in sensors, operating speeds, warnings and the situations they recognize, so look for the actual test scenario and equipment list.

Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
Forward collision warning (FCW) alerts you when a vehicle ahead is closing rapidly. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) can apply the brakes when the system judges that a crash is imminent. Check whether both are standard on the trim, whether the system operates at the speeds you commonly drive, and whether the test involved a stationary, slower-moving or braking target.
An IIHS study summary citing Cicchino (2017) found a 27% reduction in rear-end crashes with FCW alone and a 50% reduction when FCW was paired with automatic braking. Those are study findings across evaluated vehicles, not a guarantee for a particular car or driving situation.
Pedestrian automatic emergency braking
Pedestrian AEB is a separate capability from detecting another vehicle. Ask whether the system recognizes pedestrians in daylight, at night or in both conditions, and note the test speed and approach direction. An IIHS study summary citing Cicchino (2022) reported a 27% reduction in pedestrian crashes for systems that recognize pedestrians. Performance can vary with darkness, weather, clothing, occlusion and road layout.
IIHS’s 2026 award criteria include pedestrian and vehicle-to-vehicle prevention tests. The newer vehicle-to-vehicle test uses passenger-car, motorcycle and semitrailer targets, so an award under those criteria reflects more than a low-speed car-following demonstration.

Blind-spot, rear and lane systems
- Blind-spot warning or intervention: determine whether it only warns, or can also steer or brake to help prevent a lane-change conflict. Check the detection area and the conditions that disable it.
- Rear automatic braking: find out whether it detects vehicles, pedestrians, objects or only some of these, and whether it works while reversing at the speeds you use.
- Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assistance: distinguish an alert from active steering. Verify road-marking requirements, operating speeds and how the system behaves on curves or in construction zones.
- Backup camera: confirm that the image is clear, unobstructed and available whenever reverse is selected. A camera improves visibility but does not replace a shoulder check.
NHTSA classifies these technologies as driver-assistance functions. The driver must remain attentive and responsible for steering, braking and accelerating; adaptive cruise control or lane centering does not make the vehicle autonomous.
Give headlights their own safety check
Headlight performance affects how early you can see a person, animal, bicycle or road hazard. IIHS headlight ratings measure illumination on straight roads and curves, and each rating applies to a specific headlight type. A vehicle can therefore have different results depending on whether it uses, for example, a base halogen unit or an optional adaptive system.
When comparing cars, match the IIHS headlight result to the trim and lamp hardware on the vehicle you will actually buy. During an evening drive, look for a sharp cutoff without dark patches, useful curve illumination and controls that let you select high beams without distracting glare. Automatic high beams are an aid, not permission to stop monitoring traffic.

Seat-belt reminders and airbags
IIHS evaluates seat-belt reminder systems because a belt only protects an occupant when it is used correctly. Check that the reminder covers the seating positions your family uses and remains noticeable long enough to prompt buckling. Confirm the vehicle’s airbag locations, especially rear-seat and side-curtain coverage, in the equipment list and owner’s manual.

LATCH usability and real child-seat fit
IIHS publishes LATCH ease-of-use ratings. LATCH results apply to the tested seating configuration; they do not prove that your particular child restraint will fit in every position. Before buying, install the actual seat in the intended position, check that it reaches a tight installation, and verify that neighboring seats still have usable belt buckles. A vehicle with an excellent LATCH label can still be inconvenient with a wide rear-facing seat or multiple restraints.
Account for size, weight and structural compatibility
IIHS notes that lighter, smaller vehicles generally provide less protection when they collide with heavier vehicles. That does not make a large vehicle automatically safe: occupant-compartment strength, restraint performance, visibility and avoidance technology still matter. It does mean that vehicle mass and the types of roads you use belong in the decision.
Compare vehicles within a realistic class and mission. A compact car may offer excellent crash-test structure and avoidance equipment but have less mass in a collision with a large pickup. Conversely, a large vehicle with poor headlights, weak restraints or limited standard AEB can leave important risks unaddressed. Consider who rides in the vehicle, typical speeds, rural or urban exposure, and whether a third row or cargo load changes belt fit and visibility.
Verify the exact trim, options and build date
Safety equipment and ratings can change during a model year. Start with the exact make, model year, body style and trim, then confirm the production date on the driver-door certification label. Match the vehicle identification number (VIN), window sticker or build sheet to the equipment you expect.

- Check whether FCW, AEB, pedestrian AEB, blind-spot monitoring and rear automatic braking are standard or optional.
- Confirm that the tested headlight type, wheel-and-tire package and camera hardware match the vehicle on the lot.
- Look for mid-year changes to airbags, seat-belt reminders, sensors or software that can make an early-build rating inapplicable to a later car, or vice versa.
- For a used vehicle, ask whether replacement parts or accident repairs changed the original safety equipment.
When an IIHS rating or award is tied to a particular configuration, do not transfer it automatically to another trim or build period.
Check recalls before buying a used car
Use NHTSA’s recall information tools with the vehicle’s VIN, and ask the seller for repair documentation. A recall notice identifies a safety defect and the remedy, but the vehicle is not protected until the repair is completed. IIHS advises completing necessary recall repairs before purchase.
Also inspect the vehicle for warning lights, damaged sensors, nonmatching tires and evidence of collision repair. A recall search does not substitute for a mechanical inspection: it tells you about reported safety campaigns, not every defect or prior repair.

- Define the occupants and use. List the number and ages of passengers, child restraints, night driving, weather, highway speeds and any need for a third row or towing.
- Record the exact vehicle identity. Write down make, model year, body style, trim, drivetrain, VIN and build date for each candidate.
- Collect crashworthiness results. Review NHTSA frontal, side and rollover results and the relevant IIHS crash tests. Apply the 250-pound and same-class rule to frontal and overall NHTSA comparisons.
- List avoidance functions separately. Mark FCW, vehicle AEB, pedestrian AEB, blind-spot warning or intervention, rear automatic braking, lane systems and the backup camera. Note which are standard and the test scenarios used.
- Match the headlight result. Confirm the lamp type on the trim and read the IIHS result for that exact hardware.
- Check restraints. Review seat-belt reminders, airbag coverage and LATCH access, then install your own child seat in every position you plan to use.
- Compare size and mass honestly. Keep vehicles in comparable classes where possible and consider the heavier-vehicle exposure on your normal routes.
- Run the used-car checks. Search the VIN for open recalls, verify repairs and obtain an independent inspection.
- Test the interfaces. During a drive, adjust mirrors, view the camera, try the warning settings and observe whether alerts are timely and understandable. Never provoke a crash-warning system in traffic.
- Read the manual before signing. Identify sensor locations, weather limitations, deactivation procedures, calibration requirements and the conditions that make each feature unavailable.
Interpret safety statistics and future requirements correctly
NHTSA announced a 2024 rule requiring AEB, including pedestrian AEB, on nearly all covered new passenger vehicles and light trucks by September 2029. The agency projected at least 360 lives saved per year and 24,000 injuries prevented annually. Those are nationwide projections for the rule, not observed results for an individual model or a promise that every crash will be prevented.
“Automatic emergency braking is proven to save lives and reduce serious injuries from frontal crashes, and this technology is now mature enough to require it in all new cars and light trucks,” NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said in the April 29, 2024 rule announcement.
IIHS President David Harkey said in the organization’s March 24, 2026 awards announcement: “This year, we’re asking automakers to make excellent protection for back seat passengers the norm,” and said the Top Safety Pick+ criteria require systems better at preventing pedestrian crashes and higher-speed crashes with other vehicles. These statements describe award requirements and policy direction; they do not establish that every awarded vehicle performs identically in every circumstance.
A practical safety verdict
Choose the vehicle whose complete safety package fits your people and driving, not the one with the most impressive single number. A defensible comparison combines class-appropriate crashworthiness, scenario-specific avoidance testing, correctly matched headlights, usable restraints and child-seat anchors, suitable size and weight, verified trim and build date, and a clean recall record. Keep your attention on the road even when assistance features are active, and use the owner’s manual to understand their limits.
