Before you buy a used BMW M5, identify its generation and exact market specification, verify recall status by VIN, and have the individual car inspected by an independent BMW M specialist. A full service file is valuable evidence of past work, but it cannot establish the car’s present mechanical condition. The F10, F90 and newer G90/G99 differ substantially, so the right checks depend on which M5 you are considering.
What should I check before buying a used BMW M5?
Start with the car, not the generation’s reputation. Get the 17-digit VIN and confirm the model year, market specification, trim and factory equipment before relying on a listing. Then assess the vehicle’s records, recall status, physical condition, diagnostic results and test-drive behavior. A car described as “well maintained” is not necessarily in good condition now; the evidence needs to match the particular vehicle.

- Identify the car. Confirm generation, model year, market and factory specification from the VIN. Do this before comparing it with another M5 or applying a generation-specific checklist.
- Check its history and recalls. Ask for the VIN before travelling. Review ownership and vehicle-history information, and check applicable open recalls through an official BMW route for the car’s market. For a U.S. vehicle, NHTSA also provides recall lookup resources.
- Request records, not just assurances. Ask for dated service invoices and repair documentation. Compare mileage across the documents and listing, and look for evidence supporting claims about engine, transmission, differential, cooling-system and recall work.
- Arrange a specialist inspection. Have a qualified BMW M specialist examine the car from a cold start through full warm operation, scan for diagnostic faults, assess leaks and listen for abnormal noises.
- Road-test and inspect the whole vehicle. Evaluate drivability and transmission behavior, then check the body, wheels, tyres, brakes, suspension and cabin electronics. Look for signs of accident repair, modifications or use that do not fit the seller’s account.
- Compare condition and likely work. Set the asking price alongside local comparable listings only after accounting for specification, documented work, inspection findings, wear items and immediate or near-term repairs.
These steps are a decision process, not a substitute for a hands-on inspection. The buying guides that describe common M5 problems are specialist editorial sources, not population-level failure studies. Treat their reported issues as reasons to investigate a particular car—not as proof that every example has a defect.
Which BMW M5 generation are you buying?
Generation determines the basic inspection context: the engine, driven wheels, transmission and technology are not the same across the range. The figures below summarize a 2026 buying guide’s described source-market specifications; model years and specifications can vary by market, so confirm the actual car by VIN rather than treating the table as a universal catalogue.

| Generation | Years in the guide | Engine and drivetrain | Transmission | Output stated in the guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F10 | 2011–2016 | 4.4-liter twin-turbo S63 V8; rear-wheel drive | 7-speed DCT | 560 bhp |
| F90 | 2018–2023 | 4.4-liter twin-turbo S63 V8; M xDrive | 8-speed automatic | 600 bhp |
| G90/G99 | 2024 onward | S68 plug-in hybrid; M xDrive | 8-speed automatic | 727 bhp system output |
The figures are the guide’s descriptions, not a guarantee that every market version or trim matches them. BMW Group’s 2017 historical release also describes the F10 with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and 7-speed M Double Clutch transmission. For an E60, BMW’s release specifies a 5.0-liter V10 and 500 hp. Those figures use the source’s terminology and should not be treated as directly interchangeable output measurements across generations.
Why the VIN matters
A model-year label alone cannot establish the exact specification or whether a recall campaign applies to the car. Ask the seller for the VIN early enough to verify the car before travelling. Match the VIN across the vehicle and its paperwork, and use the correct regional BMW recall route; market-specific equipment, campaign eligibility and model-year boundaries can differ.
How reliable is a used BMW M5?
The available buying guides do not provide an independent, named reliability rate or failure percentage for any generation. They identify issues that have been reported and merit investigation, not a statistically established likelihood that a given M5 will fail. It is therefore not sound to declare one generation universally safe or unsafe on this evidence alone.
For a specific car, the more useful questions are whether maintenance and repairs are documented, whether applicable recalls are complete, what an independent inspection finds, and whether the vehicle’s use and modifications are credible and disclosed. A clean history report or complete service folder cannot rule out current faults. Conversely, an issue appearing in a buying guide is not, by itself, a diagnosis of the car in front of you.

What to inspect on an F10 M5
The F10’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and 7-speed DCT make its inspection different from an F90’s. Ask the seller for evidence of maintenance and repair work, then have the specialist investigate symptoms and areas flagged by F10-focused buying guides. Do not treat any item below as a guaranteed defect.
Engine, oil and fuel system
- Oil-service history: Check dated invoices, mileage continuity and the work actually performed. One guide emphasizes frequent oil servicing, but its suggested interval is specialist editorial advice, not a universal factory requirement. Do not infer a precise factory schedule from that recommendation.
- Oil use and engine behavior: Ask whether the car has needed oil top-ups and whether the seller can support the answer with records. During cold start and warm running, watch for smoke, warning messages, misfires, unusual noises or other running symptoms. A verbal assurance alone does not establish oil use or engine condition.
- Rod-bearing concerns: F10 guides flag rod-bearing wear and report rare failures, particularly on some 2012–13 cars. That is a reason for a specialist to assess the individual engine and relevant history; it is not a claim that all cars from those years have worn bearings.
- Injectors and ignition: Early injector issues, coil or spark-plug problems and difficult starting are among the reported inspection prompts. Note starting behavior and any misfire symptoms, and ask for invoices if related work is claimed.
- Fuel delivery, sensors and cooling: Ask about fuel-delivery or sensor faults and investigate any coolant leak, warning or repair record. A guide also mentions possible coolant-pipe leaks. Have the specialist examine the system rather than assuming a seller’s top-up or repair account is complete.
- Oil-pump campaign: One guide refers to an oil-pump recall on 2013 cars. Do not assume it applies to every 2013 vehicle. Confirm eligibility and completion using the VIN and official recall records.
DCT, differential and chassis
- 7-speed DCT: On the road test, assess engagement and behavior in suitable driving conditions, and note judder, delay, warning messages or other abnormal operation. Ask about the car’s use and transmission service history. The F10 guide cautions that hard launches can shorten clutch-pack life; a seller’s claims about use are not a substitute for inspection.
- Drivetrain noises: Listen for rattles and have a specialist assess their source. The guide discusses driveshaft recall history for some cars built in September–December 2014; check the exact VIN and build details rather than applying that history to every F10.
- Differential: Look for leaks and ask the specialist to check for mount cracks. A leak or noise needs diagnosis; it does not identify a specific failed component on its own.
- Steering and suspension: Pay attention to steering vibration, rear suspension clunks and signs of spring problems. Inspect tyres and suspension condition alongside the road test so that uneven wear or noises can be investigated in context.
What the F10 evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The available F10 checklists are useful for directing an inspection, but they do not establish defect rates or predict an individual car’s repair bill. Have the specialist investigate a symptom, review supporting records and state the findings in writing. If a seller presents a claimed repair as a reason to dismiss a concern, ask for the invoice and confirmation of what was replaced or repaired.
What are common problems with a used F90 M5?
The F90 retains a 4.4-liter twin-turbo S63 V8 but uses M xDrive and an 8-speed torque-converter automatic rather than the F10’s DCT. Its inspection should reflect that different drivetrain and transmission, while still focusing on the condition and history of the specific car.

Cooling system and oil use
A current buying guide flags possible cracking or leakage at the coolant expansion tank and recommends monitoring oil consumption. Ask whether the owner has recorded coolant or oil top-ups and whether any repair has been made. Have the system examined for weeping, and look for evidence of prior overheating or cooling-system work. A reported risk does not mean every F90 has a leak.

Transmission and recall history
PistonHeads describes the F90 as having an 8-speed torque-converter automatic. Its guide reports historical recall campaigns involving a transmission wiring harness and high-pressure fuel pump, and a low-pressure pump fault reported by some owners. Those descriptions do not prove that a campaign applies to a particular vehicle or that a fault is present. Verify the VIN through official recall sources, request documentation of completed remedies and have a specialist scan and inspect the car.
Test-drive observations
Pay attention to starting, smoothness, warning messages, noises, leaks and drivability throughout the road test. Record symptoms rather than trying to diagnose them from a short drive. A diagnostic scan and physical inspection can help determine whether an unusual behavior is a maintenance issue, a repair need or something that requires more investigation.
What about an E60 or the newer G90/G99?
E60: a different engine and a different checklist
The E60 M5 uses a 5.0-liter V10, according to BMW Group’s historical release, so an F10 or F90 checklist should not be applied wholesale. The available material does not provide a comprehensive E60 buying-risk list. If you are considering one, seek generation-specific information and an inspection by a specialist familiar with that model rather than extrapolating from reported V8 issues.

The 2026 buying guide describes the G90/G99 as a plug-in hybrid with M xDrive, an 8-speed automatic and S68 powertrain. It cautions that long-term reliability is still emerging, and notes the added high-voltage and charging equipment and the implications of extra weight for wear. These are early ownership considerations, not settled reliability conclusions. Confirm the particular car’s market specification and have a suitably qualified specialist assess the vehicle and its hybrid systems.

How do I check whether an M5 recall was completed?
Use the VIN, not a general model-year list. BMW Group’s recall information says consumers can check a vehicle using its 17-digit chassis/VIN number and states that applicable recall or technical-update work is free through a BMW partner. BMW directs some markets to regional sites for details, so use the route appropriate to the car’s market. In the United States, NHTSA also provides recall and investigation lookup resources.
- Ask the seller for the complete 17-digit VIN and check that it matches the vehicle and its documents.
- Enter it in the official recall lookup for the relevant market. For a U.S. vehicle, check BMW’s route and NHTSA’s recall resources.
- Review any result with the seller and request paperwork showing that an applicable remedy was completed.
- If a recall or technical update remains open, contact a BMW partner to confirm eligibility and arrange the covered work. BMW says applicable recall or technical-update repairs are free through a BMW partner.
- Keep the VIN check and repair documentation with the records you use to compare the car.
A model-year reference in an article or listing is not enough to establish that a campaign applies. Equally, do not count a recall as completed merely because the seller says the car has been checked; ask for documentation or confirmation through the official route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess the service file and seller’s claims
Records help establish what was done and when; they do not certify present condition. Prefer dated invoices with mileage and specific work details over a stamped book alone. Check that the odometer progression makes sense across service, ownership and repair documents. If a seller cites an engine, gearbox, differential, cooling or recall repair, ask for the invoice and compare its details with the specialist’s findings.
Ask about modifications, accident repairs, track use and hard launches where relevant. The F10 guide specifically notes that hard launches can shorten DCT clutch-pack life. The broader aim is to reconcile the car’s condition with its stated mileage and history. Evidence may be incomplete, so distinguish what is documented from what the seller merely reports.

- Is there a continuous, plausible mileage history in the documents available?
- Do invoices identify work and dates clearly enough to verify the seller’s claims?
- Are there unresolved warning messages, leaks, noises or drivability symptoms?
- Do tyre, brake, suspension, cabin and body condition broadly fit the use and mileage described?
- Are modifications or repairs declared and supported by records where applicable?
What should a BMW M specialist pre-purchase inspection include?
A specialist inspection is particularly valuable because the likely checks include both documentation and physical condition. The recommendation to obtain one is a practical conclusion from the difference between service history and present condition, and from the number of generation-specific issues that need hands-on assessment. It is not an endorsement of a particular provider.
Arrange the inspection independently of the seller and ask for a written report that separates observed facts from further checks the inspector recommends. Make sure the appointment includes a cold start if practical, operation through full warm-up, a suitable road test, a diagnostic scan and a physical examination. The specialist should consider the relevant generation’s engine, transmission, cooling system, drivetrain and chassis prompts, as well as the condition of tyres, brakes and suspension.
Ask for a written estimate of immediate and near-term work, distinguishing confirmed needs from items that need diagnosis. That gives you a clearer basis for comparing two cars or deciding whether to proceed. A seller’s own workshop report may provide useful context, but it is not a replacement for an independent inspection commissioned by you.

How to compare two used M5s
Compare candidates on evidence and condition rather than relying on a single model-year reputation. A tidy-looking car with a vague file may warrant more investigation than one with clear records and disclosed repairs. Use the same criteria for each vehicle so the comparison does not turn into a contest of seller claims.
| Comparison point | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Specification | Generation, model year, trim, market, drivetrain and transmission verified against the VIN | Different generations have materially different equipment and inspection priorities. |
| Maintenance evidence | Dated invoices, mileage continuity and documents for relevant repairs | Records show past work, but must be considered alongside present condition. |
| Recalls | VIN lookup results and evidence for completed applicable remedies | Campaign eligibility is vehicle-specific; a general year reference is not enough. |
| Inspection | Written findings, diagnostic results, leak evidence and road-test observations | These are direct evidence about the individual car, unlike a generic problem list. |
| Use and repairs | Disclosed modifications, accident repairs, track use and hard-use history where established | Use and repair history help put wear and condition in context. |
| Wear and near-term work | Tyres, brakes, suspension and the specialist’s estimate | Immediate or approaching work changes the cost and practicality of ownership. |
| Price | Asking price against local comparable listings after condition and required work are accounted for | The available sources do not establish current fair values. |
Do not treat a lower asking price as a bargain until the inspection identifies what work is due, and do not assume a higher-priced car is better without comparable evidence. The cited buying material contains no live pricing data, so current value depends on the local market and the individual car’s specification and condition.
Questions to ask before travelling to see the car
- What is the full VIN, and does the listing identify the correct generation, year and market version?
- Can you send dated service and repair invoices, including paperwork for work you describe as completed?
- Are there known oil or coolant top-ups, warning messages, starting problems, leaks, noises or drivability faults?
- Have any applicable recalls or technical updates been completed, and is there documentation?
- Has the car been modified, used on track, involved in an accident or subjected to hard launches? What can be documented?
- Will you allow an independent BMW M specialist to inspect it and road-test it?
If the seller will not provide the VIN or permit an independent inspection, you lose two of the most useful ways to establish what you are considering. Do not substitute a reassuring listing, a service-book stamp or a verbal promise for those checks.
