First verify its model year, market, body style, engine, fuel system and transmission. Then put structural corrosion, repair quality and a specialist road test ahead of trim, horsepower or rarity. SaabMuseum dates the 99 line to model years 1969–1984; specifications changed substantially during that span.
There is no authoritative single-year ranking, current gearbox-failure rate or dependable price guide established for the model. A documented, structurally sound car with predictable mechanical behavior is usually a better prospect than a more glamorous specification hiding corrosion or improvised repairs.

Understand which Saab 99 you are looking at
The Saab 99 was revealed on 22 November 1967. Saab developed it as a larger model and chose a four-stroke engine; early engine development involved a contract with Triumph. SaabMuseum’s model-year archive covers 1969–1984, but “Saab 99” describes a changing family of cars rather than one fixed specification.
Before comparing advertisements, write down the exact car’s model year, country or market, body style, engine, fuel system and transmission. Regional equipment and production changes mean that two cars with the same badge can have different mechanical details. A seller’s description is a starting point, not proof that the car is original.

SaabMuseum notes that chassis-number information is unavailable for some later model years. Its online tables therefore cannot resolve every identity question. Use the registration documents, invoices, factory or club records where available, and an inspection by someone familiar with the model.
Why condition matters more than a “best year”
The documented history supports identifying changes in body style, engines, fuel systems and outputs, but it does not establish a universally preferable year or trim. A 99 with serious structural corrosion can cost more to make safe than a less celebrated version in sound condition. Conversely, a car with an unusual engine or desirable trim is not automatically a good purchase if its identity is uncertain.
Assess each candidate on four separate questions:
- Is the structure sound? Look for corrosion and previous repairs in the known weak areas, from above and below.
- Is the specification credible? Compare the claimed year, body, engine, fuel system and transmission with the car and its documents.
- Does it operate properly? Require a cold start and road test, then have abnormal behavior investigated.
- Can you support it where you live? Check access to model-specific parts, manuals and experienced labor before committing.
No current survival-rate, gearbox-failure-rate or typical-price statistic is established here. Treat confident claims about a particular year being universally reliable or valuable as opinions unless the seller can provide evidence for the individual car.
Verify the car before inspecting its condition
Match the paperwork to the metal
Ask for the registration or title, chassis or identification information, old inspection records, service invoices and receipts for body repairs. Compare the identity on every document with the car. SaabMuseum’s incomplete chassis-number coverage for some later years makes independent documentation especially useful.
Record the engine number or other identifying marks where accessible, but do not dismantle components merely to prove a seller’s claim. If the car is advertised as an EMS, Turbo or another special version, ask what evidence supports that description and whether any major components have been changed. A replacement engine or gearbox does not necessarily make a car bad, but it changes what you are buying and how future parts research should be done.
Establish the configuration before pricing the car

- Model year and market of first registration.
- Two-door sedan, Combi Coupé or another body configuration shown in the records.
- Engine displacement and engine family.
- Carburettor, twin-carburettor or fuel-injection system.
- Manual or automatic transmission, including the number of forward ratios if known.
- Factory equipment versus later modifications.
This prevents an attractive badge, a swapped engine or a seller’s shorthand from steering the comparison. It also gives a mechanic a precise starting point when looking up service procedures.

Put structural corrosion at the top of the inspection
Saab Club Nederland identifies the following 99/900-family bodywork areas for attention: wheel arches, floors, the front structure, door bottoms, the axle passage, crossmembers and shock-absorber mounting points. These are inspection locations, not a guarantee that every car has identical rust or that an unlisted panel is sound.
Inspect from above and below
Photographs and a clean-looking exterior cannot substitute for an underside inspection. Arrange a lift or safe inspection ramp, bring a bright light and look for:
- Perforation, swelling seams, flaking scale or fresh underseal that hides the metal.
- Uneven texture or paint transitions suggesting previous patching.
- Cracks, distortion or poor welds around structural sections.
- Corrosion at suspension or shock-absorber mounting points.
- Water traps and damaged drain paths around floors, arches and door bottoms.
Do not poke aggressively at thin sheet metal or jack the car on an uncertain point. A specialist can distinguish surface corrosion from weakened structure without creating new damage.
Separate cosmetic rust from structural risk
Rust at a door bottom may be a localized panel repair, while corrosion in a crossmember, axle passage or shock-absorber mount can affect safety and alignment. The visible location alone does not determine the repair bill. Ask for the repair history, photographs taken before paint, invoices and the name of the shop that performed structural work.
Question any area covered in thick black coating, fresh paint or carpet that differs from adjacent surfaces. A sound repair should have an understandable method and a finish that does not merely conceal the original condition. If the seller will not permit an underside inspection, treat that refusal as a reason to stop or renegotiate the evaluation, not as proof of hidden rust.

Use an independent body assessment
Have questionable corrosion assessed before signing a purchase agreement. Ask the inspector to classify each finding as cosmetic, repairable bodywork or structural work, and to identify whether the surrounding metal has also been weakened. The available guidance does not provide a universal repair-cost schedule, so obtain a written estimate for this specific car rather than applying a generic per-panel figure.
Check the engine and fuel system against the claimed version
The 99 range used carburetted and fuel-injected engines, with different displacements and outputs over time. Confirm the fuel system rather than assuming that a year or trim badge tells the whole story. A 1972 EMS specification, for example, calls for a 1,985 cc Swedish-built fuel-injected engine and 110 hp; a 1975 car may be described with a 100 hp 1,985 cc engine or a twin-carburettor configuration depending on production period; and the 1982-on H engine is listed at 100 hp.
Request a genuinely cold start
Arrange to see the car before it has been warmed up. Observe how the engine starts, settles at idle and responds to throttle input. Look and listen for:

- Persistent smoke after the initial start-up.
- Fuel, coolant or oil leaks.
- Unusual knocking, rattling or belt noise.
- Improvised wiring, unsupported hoses or mismatched fuel-system components.
- Warning lights that fail to illuminate at key-on or fail to go out after starting.
One symptom does not prove a universal Saab 99 defect. It indicates that the individual car needs diagnosis. Ask for maintenance records and, where a problem appears, pay for compression, fuel-system or cooling-system tests appropriate to that engine rather than guessing from internet anecdotes.
Check for consistency, not just a clean bay
A freshly washed engine compartment can hide leaks temporarily. Look at the underside of the engine, the transmission casing and nearby wiring after the road test. Compare fasteners, hoses and brackets with the claimed configuration. An engine swap, aftermarket injection or non-factory carburettor arrangement may be perfectly serviceable, but it should be documented and reflected in the price and future parts plan.
Verify the gearbox and road-test the whole car
SaabMuseum’s technical specification documents a four-speed manual and an automatic option, while the model-year history shows that availability varied. Verify which transmission is actually fitted rather than relying on the advertisement.

During the stationary check
- With the engine running, select every gear deliberately and note baulking, grinding or excessive lever movement.
- For an automatic, check engagement from park or neutral into drive and reverse and look for delayed or harsh take-up.
- Look for oil leaks around the gearbox and driveshaft areas.
- Listen for whining, rumbling or changes in noise when the clutch is engaged and released, where applicable.
On the road
Drive long enough for the engine and transmission to reach normal temperature. Check that each gear engages and remains engaged under acceleration and overrun. Note difficult shifts, clutch slip, vibration, steering pull, brake behavior, overheating or noises that change with speed rather than engine rpm. Use a quiet route and obey local traffic laws; do not use a test drive to demonstrate maximum speed.

A recent owner-forum discussion about viewing a 1983 99 included advice to lift the car and check the gearbox. That is anecdotal owner guidance, not a service bulletin or failure-rate study. The correct response to abnormal shifting or noise is an inspection by a Saab-experienced mechanic before purchase.
Inspect the rest of the car without losing focus
Once the structure and drivetrain have passed their first checks, assess the systems that determine whether the car can be used immediately:
- Brakes and tires: look for cracking, uneven wear, seized components and evidence that the car has sat for a long period.
- Steering and suspension: check for play, leaks, clunks and uneven ride height, then ask the mechanic to inspect mounting points.
- Electrical equipment: test lights, indicators, wipers, heater controls, instruments and charging behavior; age-related electrical faults can be difficult to diagnose after purchase.
- Interior and seals: check for damp carpets, water ingress and missing trim that may be difficult to replace.
- Glass and doors: verify that doors latch securely and windows operate without binding.
These checks do not replace a specialist inspection. They help you distinguish a usable driver from a project and give the mechanic a prioritized list.

If one car has a stronger specification but the other has substantially better structure and records, the latter is usually the more rational starting point. The final choice depends on whether you want a reliable driver, a restoration project or a historically specific example.

A practical buying sequence
- Get the identifiers first. Ask for the registration, model year, body style, engine and transmission details before arranging a long trip.
- Request cold-car photographs and repair records. Ask specifically about the underside, door bottoms, arches, floors and previous structural work.
- View the car in daylight. Compare documents with the body, engine and interior; do not rely on a polished presentation.
- Inspect the underside. Use a lift and an independent specialist whenever possible.
- Perform the cold start and road test. Record leaks, noises, shifting behavior, warning lights and temperature changes.
- Obtain written findings. Separate urgent safety work, necessary corrosion repair, mechanical maintenance and cosmetic improvements.
- Confirm parts and expertise locally. Identify who can service the specific engine and transmission and where model-specific body or trim parts may be sourced.
- Set a walk-away point. If the seller refuses identification checks, an underside inspection or a specialist evaluation, do not let scarcity pressure you into buying blind.
Plan ownership support before you buy
Use the correct manual
A Saab 99 workshop or repair manual is useful, but the edition should match the car’s model year and configuration. A manual for a carburetted early car may not cover a later fuel-injected engine, H engine or automatic transmission. Verify the edition and contents before relying on it; no particular book, listing or stock status is established here.
Check parts access in your region
Find out in advance whether replacement panels, seals, service parts and specialist labor are obtainable where you live. Availability changes by country and over time. A seller’s statement that “parts are easy” is not a substitute for confirming the components your chosen car actually needs.
Ask about insurance and use restrictions
Classic-car insurance commonly depends on location, vehicle condition, annual mileage, storage and permitted use. Obtain quotes and read the conditions before purchase, especially if the car will be a daily driver rather than an occasional vehicle. No particular insurer or policy is established here.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The historical record gives useful identification anchors: the 1969–1984 model-year span, the 22 November 1967 reveal date, the 1974 Combi Coupé introduction, the period EMS, Turbo and H-engine specifications, and the manual and automatic transmission options documented by SaabMuseum. Saab Club Nederland supplies a practical list of corrosion-prone body areas for the 99/900 family.
Those sources do not establish a current market price, a representative reliability survey, a universal gearbox failure rate or a definitive best year. They also cannot certify that a particular advertised car is original. Only the individual car’s documents, inspection, records and road-test behavior can answer that question.
Bottom line for a prospective buyer
Buy the Saab 99 with the soundest structure, clearest identity and best evidence of care—not the one with the most impressive badge or a claimed ideal year. Verify the specification, inspect the known corrosion areas from underneath, insist on a cold start and road test, and budget for a Saab-experienced inspection. If the seller cannot document the car or will not allow those checks, walk away; another 99’s trim or horsepower will not compensate for unknown structural work.
