Buying an electric car built for China’s domestic market can be possible, but the badge and purchase price are only the beginning. Before paying a deposit, establish the exact vehicle specification and VIN, prove that your destination can approve and register it, calculate the complete landed cost, and obtain written commitments for warranty, repairs, software and charging.
A car manufactured in China is not automatically a China-market import. Many manufacturers build vehicles in China for export with destination-specific hardware, software and approval. The important distinction is between an officially imported, locally approved version and a China-market specification brought in by a parallel importer.

First decide which kind of Chinese electric car you are being offered
Ask the seller to identify the vehicle in writing as either a destination-market model sold through an authorized importer or a China-market specification intended for domestic use. Do not rely on the model name alone: two cars with the same badge can have different charging inlets, software, safety equipment, communications hardware, documentation and warranty territory.

| Question | Officially sold local version | China-market parallel import |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | Usually handled within the local importer’s type-approval or registration process. | You must establish the approval route for the exact specification and may need inspection or modifications. |
| Warranty | Normally issued under local terms by the importer or manufacturer’s local network. | Coverage may be limited to China, tied to the original purchaser, or dependent on a seller that is not an authorized local workshop. |
| Charging | Inlet, onboard charger and software are selected for the destination market. | Connector, voltage, communications and charging limits must be matched to local equipment yourself. |
| Software | Local-language interfaces, navigation, apps and over-the-air services are intended for the market. | Services can depend on a China account, regional servers, a Chinese-language interface or unavailable cellular bands. |
| Resale | Specification and service history are easier for a future buyer to verify. | Unusual equipment, uncertain support and missing records can narrow the future buyer pool. |
An official local version may have a higher advertised price, while an import may offer a model or trim unavailable locally. That apparent saving is meaningful only after approval, tax, shipping, support and charging work are included.

Get the exact vehicle identity before you compare prices
Request a written specification sheet and a copy of the vehicle documents before sending money. Your checklist should include:
- Make, model, trim and model year.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN), or the VIN allocation and a clear explanation of when the final VIN will be supplied.
- Market specification: China domestic, export-market, left-hand-drive or right-hand-drive as applicable.
- Battery chemistry and capacity, motor output, gross vehicle weight and seating configuration.
- Vehicle inlet type, maximum AC charging rate, maximum DC charging rate and any supplied cable or adapter.
- Original invoice, ownership documents, conformity or approval paperwork, and any export certificate.
- Whether the vehicle is new, used, previously registered, a demonstrator or repaired after damage.
Require the seller to state which equipment is fitted to that VIN rather than sending a brochure for a different trim. Keep the written specification with the contract. It is evidence if the delivered car differs from the advertised version and gives an approval specialist, insurer and repairer something precise to check.
Confirm that the vehicle may legally leave China
China’s four-agency notice on covered pure electric passenger vehicles provides that export licensing begins on 1 January 2026. The notice was published on 26 September 2025 and sets business eligibility and licensing procedures for covered exports. Ask the seller to identify the licensed exporter and to provide the documents required for the vehicle and shipment.

It does not mean that a destination country will approve, register, insure or support the car. A seller that cannot explain who the licensed exporter is, which documents will accompany the vehicle and who owns it until delivery presents a documentation risk before any question of technical compatibility arises.

Prove destination-country approval before paying
Road approval is specific to the country, vehicle version and sometimes the individual VIN. Ask the destination vehicle authority, or a qualified local approval specialist, to confirm the route in writing before purchase. The specialist should review the exact specification rather than a generic model name.
What approval evidence can involve
- A whole-vehicle type approval or an equivalent national approval.
- A Certificate of Conformity where the applicable approval system accepts one.
- Individual inspection and testing for an unapproved vehicle.
- Evidence of lighting, glazing, mirrors, seat belts, crash protection, emissions-related systems where applicable, noise, dimensions and identification markings.
- Modifications required to meet local rules, followed by an inspection or re-test.
The UK Vehicle Certification Agency describes type approval as checking whether vehicle samples meet specified performance standards. A Certificate of Conformity can demonstrate certain whole-vehicle approvals, but the document must correspond to the imported version. A certificate for an export-market variant does not automatically prove that a China-market trim is identical.
Great Britain example
Great Britain illustrates why registration must be checked before purchase. GOV.UK states: “You must complete certain steps when bringing a vehicle permanently into either: Great Britain, from anywhere; Northern Ireland, from outside the EU.” For a permanent import into Great Britain, the process can involve an import declaration, VAT and customs duty where applicable, notification to HM Revenue and Customs, vehicle approval, registration and tax with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, and insurance before road use.
For an unregistered vehicle not registered in the EU, the approval guidance points to Individual Vehicle Approval. The route differs depending on whether the vehicle is shipped or brought in personally. Check the live GOV.UK instructions and the exact vehicle circumstances; procedures and charges can change. This British process is an example, not a rule that can be applied to every country.

Calculate the road-ready cost, not the seller’s price
Build a written landed-cost estimate using current assumptions from a customs broker and the destination registration authority. Separate one-time costs from recurring costs and identify which party pays each item.
| Cost component | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Vehicle price | Does the invoice describe the exact VIN or only a model? Is the price for a new, used or previously registered vehicle? |
| Freight and handling | Shipping method, port charges, inland delivery, marine insurance and storage or demurrage exposure. |
| Customs, VAT and other taxes | Classification, taxable value, origin, current rate and payment point. Obtain the assumptions in writing. |
| Broker and exporter fees | Export documentation, customs declaration, clearance, currency conversion and payment charges. |
| Approval and modifications | Inspection, testing, engineering work, lighting or other changes, re-inspection and transport to the test site. |
| Registration and insurance | Registration fee, vehicle tax, plates and an insurer willing to cover the imported specification. |
| Charging changes | Home electrical work, a suitable charger, cables, adapters and any required installation certification. |
| Support reserve | Diagnostic travel, shipping parts, translation, software work and downtime if no local facility supports the car. |
Do not apply a headline tariff from a news report to every Chinese vehicle. The European Union’s definitive 2024 measure concerns new battery-electric vehicles originating in China and includes producer-specific provisions. Customs treatment can depend on origin, producer, transaction and import date. Verify the current treatment for the actual vehicle with the destination customs authority or a broker.
Check charging compatibility by hardware, not by model name
Before purchase, obtain clear photographs of the vehicle inlet and the manufacturer’s specification for AC and DC charging. Compare those details with the public networks and home supply where you will drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuestions to answer
- Which physical AC and DC inlet is fitted?
- What voltage, phase and maximum current can the onboard charger accept?
- What is the maximum DC charging power, and under what battery-temperature or state-of-charge conditions?
- Does the car require a proprietary communication method or account for public charging?
- Which cable is included, and does it meet local electrical certification requirements?
- Will the vehicle start a session on the networks you actually use?
- Can a local home charger supply the car safely under your household’s voltage, phase and protection arrangements?
Ask the charging-network operator and a local dealer or qualified electrician to confirm compatibility for the exact inlet and equipment. Do not buy an adapter or wall charger merely because it is advertised for the same model name. The Chinese market’s regulated electric-vehicle supply-equipment category does not establish that a particular vehicle will communicate with a foreign network. A locally certified charger may be suitable, but only after the vehicle and local electrical rules have been matched.

Get warranty, repairs and software promises in writing
A warranty printed in Chinese or displayed by a seller is not enough. Identify the warrantor, territory, start date, exclusions, transfer rules and claims process. Ask specifically whether a parallel-import buyer is eligible or whether coverage belongs only to the original domestic purchaser.
Warranty and repair questions
- Who accepts the claim in your country?
- Which workshop can perform diagnosis and warranty repairs?
- Can that workshop access factory diagnostic tools, security credentials and software updates?
- Where will replacement parts come from, and what are realistic order and delivery times?
- Do battery, motor, inverter, charging hardware and corrosion coverage transfer separately?
- Who pays transport if a warranty fault immobilizes the vehicle?
- What happens if a required part or software package is unavailable in your region?
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology rules require new-energy vehicle manufacturers within the rule’s scope to publish after-sales commitments covering matters such as quality guarantees, service items, parts provision, feedback, battery recycling and claims handling. That Chinese requirement does not prove that a buyer or vehicle outside China receives coverage abroad. The seller’s written promise and a local repair facility’s confirmation are the evidence that matters to your purchase.
Connected services can fail even when the car drives
Ask separately about mobile-app activation, account region, cellular connectivity, navigation maps, language options, remote commands, emergency calling and over-the-air updates. A car can be mechanically usable while losing features that depend on a China-only account, server region or network band. Request a demonstration using the account and country in which you will operate the vehicle, not a screenshot from the seller’s domestic market.

Keep every document: invoice, export papers, customs entry, approval certificate, inspection reports, registration, service invoices, software records and battery warranty. These records help establish lawful ownership and specification for a future buyer. A missing service history or an unexplained market specification can make resale more difficult even when the car is registered.
A practical buying process
- Define the use case. List where the car will be registered, the public networks you use, home-charging limits, driving side and the connected features you consider essential.
- Identify the exact car. Obtain trim, model year, VIN or VIN allocation, market specification, battery and charging data, and original documents.
- Confirm export eligibility. Have the seller name the licensed exporter and explain the documents supplied under the Chinese export-licensing process effective 1 January 2026 for covered vehicles.
- Ask the destination authority about approval. Send the exact specification to the authority or a qualified specialist and obtain the approval route, evidence required, estimated modifications and inspection sequence in writing.
- Price the import with a broker. Obtain a written estimate for freight, customs, taxes, brokerage, approval, registration, insurance and charging work using current rates.
- Secure support. Get written warranty terms, identify a repairer with diagnostic access, and ask for parts sources and realistic lead times.
- Verify charging and software. Match the inlet, AC/DC limits, cables, public networks, home installation, app, connectivity, language and update support to the destination.
- Confirm insurability. Provide the VIN and approval information to an insurer and obtain a quotation before paying a non-refundable deposit.
- Compare the complete result. Put the road-ready imported cost and support burden beside the locally sold version, not beside its advertised list price.
- Use a contract that protects you. Specify the VIN, market version, documents, delivery condition, refund rights if approval fails, responsibility for taxes and what warranty and parts support are included.
Common failure points and how to respond
The seller says registration is “guaranteed”
Ask for the authority, approval category and written confirmation tied to the exact VIN or specification. A seller’s assurance is not a registration certificate. If approval depends on modifications, price and schedule those before the deposit.
The car has a familiar name but the inlet is different
Stop the purchase until the inlet, AC/DC limits and communication requirements are documented. Have the network operator and a qualified electrician confirm the proposed equipment. An adapter that physically fits may still be electrically or operationally unsuitable.
The warranty is described as “global”
Request the territorial terms, eligible owner, claim procedure and local workshop list. “Global” is not a substitute for a named warrantor that will accept a claim in your country.
The import looks cheaper until arrival
Recalculate with customs assumptions, storage, approval, modifications, registration, insurance and home-charging work. Ask the broker what happens if customs reclassifies the vehicle or if inspection requires an additional change.
The app or updates do not work after delivery
Record the account region, supported language, cellular requirements and update method before purchase. Ask the seller to demonstrate activation for your destination. If the service depends on a domestic account, treat that as a material limitation rather than a minor inconvenience.
