If Super Cruise disengages, immediately steer yourself and keep watching traffic. Do not wait for the system to recover. Once the vehicle is stable, use the Super Cruise steering-wheel button to display the reason, then follow the instruction for your exact model year. If Super Cruise will not activate, verify the road is mapped for that vehicle, an eligible OnStar plan is active when required, lane markings and sensors are visible and clean, GPS is available, and Adaptive Cruise Control is engaged.
Take control first, then identify the reason
Super Cruise is a driver-assistance system, not an autonomous driving system. GM says you must remain attentive and ready to steer at any time. When the system gives a takeover alert or stops providing hands-free steering, hold the wheel, guide the vehicle manually and continue driving while you assess the message.

- Steer immediately. Keep your eyes on the road, maintain a safe speed and leave extra space around other vehicles. Do not reach for menus or attempt a reset before the vehicle is under your control.
- Wait until the situation is safe. If you are changing lanes, approaching an exit or dealing with traffic, complete that maneuver manually before troubleshooting.
- Retrieve the displayed explanation. Chevrolet’s current feature guidance says to press and hold the Super Cruise button on select model-year 2026 and newer vehicles. Other Chevrolet instructions say to press the button within 10 seconds after disengagement to see why it stopped. The correct button action depends on the vehicle; use the owner’s manual for that model and year.
- Follow the message rather than guessing. A road-map warning, an attention warning and a connection error require different actions. Record the exact wording if you need assistance later.
What the Super Cruise messages mean
The display text is the most useful diagnostic clue. Chevrolet examples include “No Road Information,” “Driving in Exit Lane” and “Looking Away from Road for Too Long.” A generic “Super Cruise Unavailable” message can appear when the system experiences an error or loses its connection. The owner’s manual supplies the message-specific meaning and the approved response for your vehicle.

| Message or symptom | Likely category | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “No Road Information” | Road or map condition | Continue steering manually. Super Cruise operates only on GM-mapped compatible roads, so wait until you are back on an eligible segment before trying again. |
| “Driving in Exit Lane” | Road position | Take control and remain manual through the exit or lane transition. Do not attempt to force hands-free operation in an exit lane. |
| “Looking Away from Road for Too Long” | Driver attention | Look back at the roadway and keep monitoring traffic. Re-engagement is possible only when the vehicle again confirms the required attention conditions. |
| “Super Cruise Unavailable” | System error or lost connection | Check the basic prerequisites once parked or on a safe stretch. If the message persists, use Chevrolet support or an authorized service provider. |
These labels are examples from Chevrolet’s product and troubleshooting pages, not a ranking of how often failures occur. Your vehicle may show different wording or additional messages.

Why Super Cruise disengages
Road or map conditions
Super Cruise is limited to roads in GM’s compatible mapped network, and eligible road types vary by vehicle. Chevrolet’s current support pages describe a network of more than 600,000 miles in North America; the pages do not provide a publication year, so treat that as the current figure stated on those pages rather than a dated expansion promise. A road that appears suitable to you may still be outside the map or outside the road types approved for your model.
Approaching an exit, entering an exit lane or reaching a section for which the vehicle has no road information can end hands-free operation. Continue manually until the display confirms that the mapped-road requirement is met again.
Lane markings or visibility
The forward-facing camera must see lane boundaries. Rain, snow, spray, fog, glare, mud or worn markings can make the lane geometry unreliable. If lane lines are obscured, maintain manual control; the system is designed to withdraw rather than steer without adequate visual information.

Dirty or obstructed sensors
GM identifies a clean forward-facing camera and clean radars as prerequisites. Dirt, mud, ice, road salt or a film on the relevant surfaces can prevent lane or traffic detection. Consult the owner’s manual for the sensor locations and its cleaning directions. Clean only as instructed; the general troubleshooting guidance does not authorize a particular cleaner, cloth or repair method.
GPS or connection loss
GPS availability is required. A temporary loss of position or a connection problem can produce an unavailable message even when the road and lane markings look normal. Move to a safe place, allow the vehicle systems to recover and check the message again. Do not infer that a GPS or connection warning has been fixed merely because the icon returns briefly.
Driver-attention alerts
The driver-monitoring system can disengage Super Cruise when it determines that you have looked away too long or have not responded to an alert. Keep your attention on the roadway and be prepared to take the wheel without delay.

Checks to make before trying to activate Super Cruise
Activation requires more than pressing the Super Cruise button. Run through these conditions in order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Equipment: Confirm that the vehicle is equipped with Super Cruise. Availability differs by model, trim and model year.
- Service plan: Chevrolet says an eligible OnStar service plan is required after the initial Super Cruise service included with purchase ends. Account coverage and eligibility are specific to the vehicle and owner.
- Mapped road: Make sure you are on a GM-mapped compatible road for that vehicle. The compatible-road network is not a guarantee that every lane or maneuver on a road is supported.
- Lane visibility: Check that lane markings are visible and not hidden by weather, dirt, glare or construction conditions.
- Camera and radar condition: Inspect the areas identified in the manual and clean them according to the manual’s directions.
- GPS: Verify that the vehicle has GPS availability. Tunnels, obstructions or a system fault can interrupt positioning.
- Adaptive Cruise Control: Super Cruise engagement also requires Adaptive Cruise Control to be engaged. The button sequence and prerequisites vary by model year.
If any one of these requirements is missing, repeated button presses will not make the system available. Correct the underlying condition or continue driving manually.
Understanding the indicator lights
Indicator colors tell you whether the system is merely available or actually controlling steering. In the older-model instructions, a white Super Cruise icon means the system is enabled or available. Green status and a green steering-wheel light bar indicate active hands-free operation. Keep your hands on the wheel until the light bar turns green and the vehicle confirms engagement.

| Indicator state | Meaning | Driver response |
|---|---|---|
| White icon | Super Cruise is enabled or available, but not necessarily engaged. | Continue monitoring traffic and satisfy the remaining activation conditions. |
| Green status and green steering-wheel light bar | Hands-free operation is active under the older-model indicator instructions. | Stay attentive and be ready to steer; hands-free does not mean driver-free. |
| Red flashing light bar and red icon | An immediate takeover is required. | Take steering control at once and follow the alert sequence in the owner’s manual. |
What to do during escalating takeover alerts
Super Cruise uses escalating alerts when it needs you to resume control. The exact timing and behavior can vary by vehicle, so the owner’s manual takes precedence.
Alert 2: take the wheel and re-engage later
In the described Alert 2 behavior, the vehicle coasts until you take over. Once you are steering, Super Cruise is disengaged and must be re-engaged if conditions are suitable. Do not release the wheel again until the system confirms active operation.

Alert 3: the vehicle may stop in its lane
If you fail to respond to the highest-level alert, Chevrolet says the vehicle may steer and brake gradually to a stop in its current lane. The hazards may activate and OnStar may attempt to contact you. Super Cruise may remain unavailable until the vehicle is turned off and cycled on. This is an emergency fallback, not a substitute for taking control at the first alert.
Best Value
- Microfiber 16 x 12-inch cleaning cloth (24-pack); ideal for cleaning cars, trucks, boats, and more
- Ultra-soft and non-abrasive car drying towels; will not scratch paints, vinyl, glass, finishes, or other surfaces
- Effectively cleans either dry or with liquid cleaners for streak-free results and a lint-free shine
- Durable and absorbent; soak up 8 times their own weight
- Can be reused hundreds of times
A red flashing light bar and red icon mean you need to steer immediately. If traffic or a roadside location makes stopping unsafe, control the vehicle to the safest available position while following the manual’s instructions.
How to re-engage after a normal disengagement
- Bring the vehicle to a stable manual-driving state and confirm that you are not in an exit lane or another unsupported maneuver.
- Check the display for the reason Super Cruise stopped. On select model-year 2026 and newer vehicles, press and hold the Super Cruise button; on other vehicles, Chevrolet says to press it within 10 seconds of disengagement to obtain more information.
- Resolve the stated condition: return to a mapped road, improve lane visibility, clean the sensors as directed, restore GPS or address the attention alert.
- Engage Adaptive Cruise Control if it is not already active.
- Use the Super Cruise control for your model year and wait for the confirmation indicators. A white icon alone means availability; wait for the green status and green light bar described in the applicable instructions before treating hands-free steering as active.
There is no universal reset sequence. A power cycle may be part of the recovery after an Alert 3 event, but do not use it as a substitute for the message-specific procedure in the manual.
When the service plan is the obstacle
The initial Super Cruise service included with purchase does not necessarily continue indefinitely. Chevrolet states that an eligible OnStar service plan is required after that included period ends. Because plan coverage and account eligibility depend on the vehicle and owner, sign in to the account associated with the vehicle or contact Chevrolet to verify the exact status. A plan issue cannot be corrected by cleaning a camera or changing a driving setting.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Ask Chevrolet support or an authorized service provider for help when an error or connection message persists after the basic checks, when the same warning returns on clean, clearly marked mapped roads, or when the vehicle reports a sensor or system fault. The general troubleshooting guidance does not provide a driver procedure to recalibrate or repair Super Cruise.
Have the following information ready:
- The exact display message and indicator color.
- The model, trim and model year.
- Whether Adaptive Cruise Control was engaged.
- The road type and whether you were approaching an exit or lane change.
- Weather, visibility and any recent mud, ice or impact near the camera or radars.
- Whether an eligible OnStar plan is active and whether GPS or connection warnings appeared.
Do not attempt to open, recalibrate or reposition sensors yourself. Use only the inspection and cleaning steps provided for your vehicle.
Model-year differences matter
Super Cruise controls, indicator behavior and button timing are not identical across the lineup. Chevrolet’s current feature page specifically calls for a press-and-hold action on select 2026-and-newer vehicles, while other guidance describes pressing the button within 10 seconds after disengagement. Older-model instructions use a white availability icon and green active indicators, but your vehicle may display additional states. Always pair general Chevrolet guidance with the owner’s manual for the exact model year; that manual governs the message definitions, alert timing, restart requirements and sensor locations.
Quick Recap
A concise roadside decision path
- Alert or red light bar: steer immediately and keep driving manually.
- Need the reason: use the model-specific Super Cruise button action to display the message.
- Road message: leave the exit lane or wait until you are on a mapped compatible segment.
- Visibility message: improve visibility and inspect the camera and radars using the manual’s directions.
- Attention message: refocus on the roadway and respond to the alert before considering re-engagement.
- Plan, GPS, connection or generic error: verify the OnStar plan and GPS, then seek support if the warning remains.
- Ready to try again: engage Adaptive Cruise Control first, then activate Super Cruise and wait for the active green indication.
