Stop safely before the battery is fully depleted, then call your fleet dispatcher and the truck’s OEM or contracted commercial roadside provider. Give them the truck’s exact location, make and model, battery state and warning messages. Heavy-duty electric trucks do not have one universal towing, wheel-lift, external-power or roadside-charging procedure, so use only the instructions for that specific vehicle and the recovery equipment approved by the responsible provider.
Immediate priority: get the truck and other road users safe
If the truck still moves, leave the travel lane as soon as it is safe and stop at a location that gives the vehicle and trailer as much separation from traffic as possible. A hard shoulder, truck pull-off, rest area or other approved stopping place may be appropriate depending on the road and local rules. Do not keep driving merely to reach the planned charger if the truck is displaying a critically low battery warning, losing power or estimating that it cannot get there.

Apply the parking brake, activate hazard warning lights and use the truck’s required warning equipment according to the operator’s emergency policy. If the vehicle is stopped in a live lane, on a blind curve, at a railroad crossing or in another immediately dangerous position, follow the fleet’s emergency procedure and contact the relevant emergency service. Do not stand in a traffic lane or walk onto a motorway to look for a charger.

Step-by-step response for a possible range shortfall
- Stop at the safest reachable location. Use the truck’s current propulsion and braking warnings as a guide. If a safe stop is no longer reachable, reduce risk by following the operator’s emergency instructions and alerting dispatch immediately.
- Call the fleet dispatcher. Report that a heavy-duty battery-electric truck may not reach its next charging stop or has already lost usable traction-battery charge. The dispatcher can check the route, nearby approved facilities, traffic conditions and the fleet’s contracted recovery channel.
- Contact the OEM or contracted commercial roadside provider. Ask for a provider that explicitly supports the truck’s exact make, model, weight and configuration. State that the vehicle is a heavy-duty electric truck with insufficient or depleted traction-battery charge.
- Provide operational details. Share the precise location, direction of travel, truck make and model, battery percentage or range displayed, dashboard warnings, trailer and payload information if requested, and whether the truck can select neutral or move under its own power. Tell the provider about traffic exposure, terrain and any visible damage or collision involvement.
- Confirm equipment suitability before recovery begins. Ask the provider to verify that its personnel, tow vehicle, lifting method and any charging or transport equipment are approved for this electric truck. Keep the truck stationary until the provider gives truck-specific instructions.
- Follow the current manual and provider instructions exactly. The recovery plan may differ by axle configuration, battery location, drive system, software state and whether the vehicle is loaded. Do not substitute a procedure from another electric truck or a passenger car.
- Record the event after the immediate danger is resolved. Save the route, battery readings, weather, payload, speed profile, terrain, charger status, dispatch decisions and recovery timeline. That record lets the fleet correct its planning assumptions instead of simply adding an arbitrary extra buffer.
Why you should not improvise a tow or roadside charge
There is no established, universal recovery method for every heavy-duty electric truck. No current official US retail listing was published for a common rule for towing configuration, wheel movement, axle lifting, external battery power, connector selection or roadside charging. Those choices can depend on the truck’s motor and axle design, high-voltage isolation state, parking-brake system, battery placement, manufacturer restrictions and the condition that caused the stop.
Improvising can create several hazards:
- Driveline or motor damage: rotating driven wheels while the high-voltage system is disabled may be prohibited for that model.
- Electrical injury: a depleted display reading does not mean every high-voltage component is safe to handle, especially after a fault or collision.
- Uncontrolled movement: releasing brakes, selecting neutral or lifting an axle without the manufacturer’s procedure can allow a tractor-trailer to roll.
- Equipment mismatch: a light-duty tow truck, portable charger, adapter or extension lead may not support the truck’s mass, connector, voltage or charging protocol.
A passenger-car manual can illustrate the narrow principle of stopping safely and contacting the manufacturer’s roadside service, but it cannot establish a heavy-truck procedure. For example, the Tesla Model 3 owner manual directs a driver who has run out of range to stop when safe and contact the manufacturer’s roadside assistance or a preferred tow provider. That is Model 3 guidance, not authorization to tow a commercial truck in the same way.
How to choose or verify the recovery provider
Use the fleet’s existing commercial roadside channel whenever possible. If dispatch must arrange another provider, evaluate the service on these four practical tests before authorizing movement:

| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Vehicle capability | The provider supports the exact make, model, gross weight, axle layout and tractor-trailer configuration. |
| Location coverage | The crew can reach the truck’s road, direction and access conditions, including restricted or remote sites. |
| Coordination | The provider can work with the fleet dispatcher and OEM technical support, and can obtain any required authorization. |
| Procedure compliance | The recovery plan follows the truck’s current owner manual and OEM instructions rather than a generic electric-vehicle tow practice. |
If a service cannot answer those questions, keep it in a support role while dispatch finds a qualified heavy-duty provider. No specific commercial provider or nationwide availability can be assumed from general roadside listings.
What makes heavy-duty charging different
A truck that cannot reach a station may need a charging site with substantially different power, access and connector requirements from those used by passenger cars. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) reports that charging a Class 8 semitruck in a matter of hours may require a single connector rated at least 350 kilowatts. Its 2025 infrastructure feature also describes the Megawatt Charging System as supporting up to 3.75 megawatts and notes that a site charging several heavy-duty trucks at once may need 20 megawatts or more.
Those figures describe infrastructure design, not an emergency promise. They do not mean that the stranded truck accepts 350 kW or megawatt charging, that a particular site has that capacity, or that a roadside crew can connect it safely. The dispatcher and provider must verify the truck’s connector, voltage and maximum charging rate, the site’s access for a tractor-trailer, and whether the station is operating.

Build a route plan around the truck’s actual work
Prevention starts with the individual truck’s duty cycle, not a generic range number. Local, regional and long-haul operations place different demands on charging.
| Duty cycle | Planning emphasis | Charging pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Local or depot-based | Return-to-base schedule, overnight dwell time, daily payload and the ability to finish a shift with reserve. | Depot charging can cover much of the energy requirement when the truck returns reliably. |
| Regional | Multiple routes, dwell windows, elevation and whether a vehicle can return to its depot before the next assignment. | Depot charging supplemented by verified en-route options where routes exceed the truck’s practical range. |
| Long-haul | Highway access, legal driving and rest periods, trailer and payload changes, and recovery options between stops. | High-power en-route charging is essential; a depot-only plan may not provide enough energy during the shift. |
An NREL 2024 white paper estimates that about 70% of heavy-duty trucks operate within 100 miles, while about 10% require an operating range of 500 miles or more. Those are national operating-range categories, not a prediction for an individual fleet and not a measure of how often trucks run out of charge.
A separate NREL study published in 2022 modeled more than 205 million miles of telematics data. In its scenarios, off-shift charging compatible with current light-duty infrastructure supplied 35%–77% of energy demand for local and regional trucks with a 300-mile range. For long-haul trucks modeled with a 500-mile range, mid-shift charging represented 44%–57% of energy demand and required megawatt-level charging speeds. These are modeled results for the study’s assumptions, not specifications for every truck.

Verify every planned charging stop
- Match the connector and communication protocol to the truck, not just the station’s advertised vehicle category.
- Check the truck’s maximum charging power and the station’s delivered power; a higher-rated dispenser does not force the truck to accept more energy.
- Confirm that the site has truck-length access, appropriate turning space, operating hours and payment or fleet-authentication support.
- Check live status immediately before dispatch and again when the truck is within practical diversion distance.
- Identify a second compatible stop or a safe contingency location before the battery reaches the minimum reserve.
Use a reserve that reflects conditions
Range estimates change with payload, speed, grades, wind, temperature, traffic, auxiliary loads and battery condition. NHTSA notes that battery thermal management can consume energy and reduce driving range, but it does not provide one adjustment that applies to every heavy-duty truck. Use the vehicle’s current estimate and the fleet’s measured operating data; do not apply a universal percentage correction copied from a passenger car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Infrastructure facts that matter to dispatchers
Charging capacity is also a grid-planning issue. NREL’s high-power charging analysis says the critical site-design questions are the expected load, the site location and the size of the electrical service needed. A station that can serve one truck may not be able to serve several simultaneously, even if each dispenser appears compatible.

NREL’s 2021 short-haul fleet research found that 78%–86% of the real-world distribution substations it studied could supply a fleet of 100 battery-electric trucks at 100 kW per vehicle without upgrades. That finding applies only to the substations and assumptions in that study. It is not evidence that a roadside station, a specific depot or every utility connection can provide the same service.

For dispatch, the practical lesson is to treat charger availability, power sharing, queueing and utility constraints as route variables. A map pin alone does not prove that a fully loaded tractor-trailer can charge there at the required speed.
A dispatcher’s prevention checklist
- Record the truck’s measured usable range by payload, season, route type and average speed.
- Set a minimum arrival state of charge for each route segment and define the point at which dispatch must reroute or stop.
- Maintain a list of verified compatible chargers with connector, power, access, hours and live-status checks.
- Include a contingency stop that is reachable without relying on the first station being operational.
- Train drivers on the fleet’s safe-stop, high-voltage and emergency-contact procedure.
- Keep the current truck manual and OEM roadside number available in the cab and dispatch system.
- Review every shortfall for charger outages, weather, payload, traffic, route changes and inaccurate range assumptions.
There is no published rate in the cited material for how often heavy-duty electric trucks run out of charge. A fleet should therefore measure its own near-misses and events rather than infer risk from a national percentage.
